Scottish 6-day, Day 3, Culbin, M21E, 10.8km, 105m, 29 controls. This is mostly such a nice forest, unfortunately we used the horrible bit. Lots and lots of heather with a fair bit of felling thrown in with just a few small (and badly used) areas of nice stuff thrown in. Also lots of time spent on tracks. Disappointing. Bonked a km from the finish due to running 5 hours after breakfast.

Scottish 6-day, Day 2, Carse of Ardersier, M21E, 6.0km, 15m (!!!), 25 controls. Middle race, made the best of the the area and was again glad not to be the first into the the grass and the start and end, was too early to have tracks in the heather though. Warm day and was ready to finish after about 10 minutes. Far too scrappy.

Scottish 6-day, Day 1, Lossie, M21E, 9.9km, 80m, 19 controls. Nice forest to start the week and not the worst for an early start - though the southern part of the area did track significantly even after the 30 minutes after first start that I had. Nice area but the planning was poo and didn't take advantage of the tricky bits at all. Slow race from me, had no oomph but was happy to take it easy with another 5 days to come.

Run - Trail 44:40 [3] 9.0 km (4:58 / km)

East jog with Greg in Dunblane along Allan Water, beautiful morning, felt crap but expected too after a week off. Looking forward to the Scottish now - especially all the rain due tomorrow.

Note
(rest day)

Walked in and out of work and that was really as much as I felt like I could do - body was feeling wrecked.

Maps from the French 5 day now uploaded with my gps (bottom of page).

Tuesday Jul 23, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Long, but not very strenuous, day of site surveying. Not wanting to run when I got home but not planning on doing so either. Quite a bit cooler out today (but still very happy not to be in the office).

Run - Trail 1:05:51 intensity: (14 @0) + (5:51 @1) + (11:18 @2) + (24:07 @3) + (19:09 @4) + (5:12 @5) 11.47 km (5:44 / km) +492m 4:44 / km
ahr:144 max:171 shoes: Saucony Excursion TR5

Lovely evening run from Mark and Alice's with an extended Monday night group. Still pretty hot but cooling sufficiently and a bit of cloud cover made it tolerable. Legs weren't in the same forgiving mood though and I suffered on all the climbs - not aided by the fact that the wee Otter boy was wanting to skip and float away up all the hills. Cracking BBQ after.
Going to have to take this week easy to give my body some recovery time after the SLMM and French so I can made it around the Scottish next week.

Sunday Jul 21, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Too hot in the morning and too much travelling in the evening; no harm in taking it esay for teh day. Back in (the slightly cooler) UK.

Run - Trail 1:39:59 intensity: (6:38 @1) + (29:36 @2) + (47:25 @3) + (16:20 @4) 16.82 km (5:57 / km) +566m 5:05 / km
ahr:138 max:160

Got the €1 train to Quillan (which was free as the conductor didn't show up) and ran back over the hills with Greg. Went as late as possible to avoid the heat which was a most excellent plan but meant that we only just made it home before dark. However running in the cooler evening meant that we were rewarded with two sightings of massive deer and a herd (?) of about a dozen wild boar - thankfully all running away from us. Really enjoyed this.

Run - Trail 1:17:45 intensity: (7:29 @1) + (15:25 @2) + (21:33 @3) + (20:45 @4) + (12:33 @5) 13.25 km (5:52 / km) +480m 4:58 / km
ahr:145 max:176

Renne le Chateau loop with Greg. Waited until after a thunderstorm for the the temperature to drop 10 degrees (still 24 though) and headed out very slowly. Pushed harder than we should of on the first climb and I was wasted by the top and running on the red line, didn't really recover properly after than and had to take the final decent easy to avoid busting myself completely in the heat (Greg was only just getting into it by then!). Good to be get out but too hot to be completely enjoyable.

French 5 day, Day 5. Much like yesterday only the ground was covered in loose stones as well. Another early start meant it impossible to make any real progress through the thick scrub, but it was at least not too hot (like my run really).

An odd event in all, felt very much like a couple of local events bolted together, not that it was poorer for that, but it felt like it was missing something (like overall results!).

ahr:165 max:176 shoes: Jalas 2010

French 5 fay, Day 4. (Straight line distance was said to be 8.5km!!!!) Hadn't realised it but have been here before (a 2 day a couple of years ago with the Inman's). Just and thick and bushy now as it was then, but at least I knew what to expect and where not to go! Despite starting before 9 I still really suffered with the heat and was struggling to keep up with geriatrics and kids by the end! Was glad to be finished but did enjoy it.

A very easy ride (but impressive gps!) back from the orienteering to the parents place. I'd guess that 90% of it was downhill, just as well as Greg and I were on the parents old touring bikes which felt so slow compared to my road bike. Fun and a nice stretch of the legs, but will be aching in funny places tomorrow.

ahr:161 max:169 shoes: Jalas 2010

French 5-day, Day 3. Nicest area of the event so far; Alpine woods on moraine contours. Unfortunately feeling tired and still suffering with the altitude so was seriously struggling on the inclines. Fun though and the thunderstorms stayed away until well after the event.

ahr:156 max:171 shoes: Jalas 2010

French 5 day, day 2. Warmer and dry today, but not to hot for running, though the hills were still proving a major obstacle, improving on them a little as well though. Not a lot of contour detail in todays area but some nice forest (apparently) good views.

Run - Trail warm up/down 10:41 intensity: (2:12 @1) + (2:47 @2) + (4:32 @3) + (1:10 @4) 1.09 km (9:47 / km) +2m 9:42 / km

ahr:163 max:174 shoes: Jalas 2010

French 5 day, day 1. Cold and damp, not on at all. Nice terrain, although too many paths to very lost. Couldn't run hills, hopefully just the altitude rather than a broken me. A few wee problems, worst of which wad running into an invisible electric fence... Happy to be running the old man's course!

Run - Trail warm up/down 11:18 intensity: (2 @0) + (1:14 @1) + (2:23 @2) + (4:53 @3) + (2:46 @4) 1.23 km (9:11 / km) +53m 7:33 / km

ahr:137 max:154 shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite

Lovely run in the woods behind the campsite, managed to pick a dry spot between thunderstorms - not sure why there are thunderstorms up here, its not all that hot. Felt awful starting but put it down to the altitude, running okay by the end and think my legs have forgotten about last weekend.

Thursday Jul 11, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Off to France. Properly hot here, none of the rubbish temperature in the 20's from the UK! Now I remember why I don't come out here in the summer.

Run - Trail 31:03 intensity: (1:34 @1) + (2:08 @2) + (21:59 @3) + (5:22 @4) 6.39 km (4:51 / km) +20m 4:47 / km

HFW, still feeling dead, again not helped by the heat but mostly down to the weekend. Apparently Ciara has already been up a Munro and done a hill race since the weekend! I'm sure there's a conclusion to be drawn from that connected to the weekend but I'll be dammed if I can see it...

Tuesday Jul 9, 2013 #

5 PM

Run - Trail 33:11 intensity: (11 @0) + (2:10 @1) + (4:15 @2) + (24:54 @3) + (1:41 @4) 6.5 km (5:06 / km) +19m 5:02 / km
ahr:139 max:157 shoes: Asics 1150 (2012)

HFW. Very hot and legs very tired. Took a break half way to watch people jumping off the footbridge and enjoy the sun for a while - don't worry, it was the river they were jumping into.

Monday Jul 8, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Nice and easy walk in and out of work. Legs tired and stiff but no hurting - even got out of bed before remembering that I'd just done a MM! (must have been slacking). Only problem today was coping with the heat.

Adventure race race 4:16:56 [3] 22.5 km (11:25 / km) +975m 9:23 / km
shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite

SLMM, Black Combe, Bowfell, Day 2, 20.1km, 975m. Out even earlier today (7.31) but it was still plenty warm, though thankfully a bit of cloud cover until about 11 o'clock. So nice to get up and pack up in the warm and have plenty of time to get sorted, even got the control descriptions before starting today so had plenty of time to plot the course.

Unfortunately the course weren't planned any better than yesterday; #1 was right in the middle of a lovely area of contour detail but the control was on top of the highest hill. We also had a 3km contouring leg with a road just before the control and then the real killer of the weekend; several kilometers of knee high heather (had the planner ever visited this area???). Up until this point we had been slowly catching Jon and Ian until they were only maybe 30 seconds ahead, but we had no hope of matching their pace when it got physical.

Still, we wouldn't have gained anything by catching them so saving the legs a bit was no bad thing, also by that time the sun was high and hot so not pushing too hard was probably a little bit sensible as well. Despite this it was impossible not to enjoy the day, again being in the Lakes in the sun with the place mostly to yourself is hard to beat. My only other grumbles is using the same map for both days (which you had to manually mark) and the prizes - everyone apart from course winners getting a couple of bottles of beer, not much compared to the £88 a team entry fee.

Adventure race race 4:33:46 [3] 27.8 km (9:51 / km) +1095m 8:14 / km
shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite

SLMM, Black Combe, Bowfell, Day 1, 24.9km, 1095m, Mixed team with Ciara. Early start (8.08!!!) at least meant that we were well in the hills before the sun got too hot and we also had the place mostly to ourselves, which is quite rare in the Lakes. Mind you, this is a bit of the Lakes that people rarely visit as it’s lacking the dramatic landscape of the rest. That also meant that the area didn’t provide much in the way of a challenge for navigation or route choices, nor were there many paths so much of the day was spent in low tussocks, not too rough but not fast either.

The course didn’t really make the best of the area either with lots of easy control sites (especially when you could see for miles). The only one we had difficulty with was on a feature that the descriptions described as a platform, there was no platform symbol on the map and no obvious feature at the GR. Wondered around for a few minutes before finding it on a spur. Would have been easy had it been described as a spur!

Nevertheless, it was lovely to be out in the sun and getting to the overnight camp shortly after midday meant we had 9 hours to enjoy it and re-hydrate. Was a bit of a disadvantage being out before the masses in terms of tracking, but so much more enjoyable. Ended up some distance ahead in the mixed category and in 4th overall – a little under 8 minutes down on Jon Marsden and Ian Webb (in 3rd) and 16 off the lead. Quite respectable. The lack of any serious hills also meant that my legs didn’t suffer too badly. A very enjoyable day.

HFW. Couldn't face getting up to run in this morning (seriously suffering from lack of sleep last night). Surprisingly stiff from the Harvester, guess that's what becomes of not running for the best past of a week. Feeling okay by the time I got home.
