Note
(rest day)

Thought I deserved a day off after the past few (honestly).

Thursday Aug 30, 2012 #

4 PM

Run - Terrain 1:09:02 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (22:00 @2) + (28:00 @3) + (9:02 @4) 11.85 km (5:50 / km) +241m 5:17 / km
shoes: Asics Gel Enduro 3

Where has all the water gone? Surprisingly dry after a perfect sunny day, it almost felt like summer again (after all, it is still August). A bit slow to get going but felt amazing once I got some momentum and had a great time running through woods and bogs.

7 PM

Run - Trail 1:02:24 intensity: (2:24 @0) + (10:00 @1) + (35:00 @2) + (12:00 @3) + (3:00 @4) 10.52 km (5:56 / km) +234m 5:20 / km

It rained today, not just a bit, but more than a lot. Too much water for the ground to deal with, there was standing water everywhere (I mean everywhere, even on hills). Lucky here, but half a dozen neighbors got turned into islands. Roads blocked so couldn't make the O this evening, so went for a run to check out what the water had been up to. Dozens of places flooded (from run off, not from rising river levels), roads and paths washed away, railway closed... Never seen such heavy and persistent rain, it absolutely hammered it down (including hail) for a couple of hours. Dry now though.

Bike - Mountain 2:47:42 intensity: (10:00 @0) + (49:00 @1) + (59:00 @2) + (42:00 @3) + (7:42 @4) 50.14 km (3:21 / km) +774m 3:06 / km

A cycle amongst giants; been wanting to do this loop for ages so took advantage of a day day and headed up to the Braes of Doune Windfarm. Never been up close to a big wind turbine before, towers didn't appear as big as I had imagined but the blades certainly were. Also don't care what they say about being them being painted grey (to blend in with the skyline), they're not far off white and when the sun is on them against the moor they appear bright white!! Not a very interesting cycle otherwise though I was tired by Braco and the headwind home was a punishment.

Didn't happen. Again.

Mapping 30:00 [0]

Fours hours wandering the streets of Dunblane to get it finished. Surveyed Dunblane Primary School, the unfortunate reason why many people have heard of the city and after mapping dozens of schools in England surrounded by 10 feet prison fences and electronic gates I was somewhat surprised to see that the school was completely open to the public at all times. I liked this as most schools seem to be OTT paranoid.

2 PM

Run - Trail 1:35:16 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (40:00 @2) + (25:00 @3) + (15:00 @4) + (5:16 @5) 14.82 km (6:26 / km) +627m 5:18 / km
shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR3

Up Dumyat and down the back to watch the Ochil 2000's race. Skyhigh said as I went out that it wasn't going to rain today. It rained the whole time I was out, then a lot when I finished! More like two runs as I stopped for quite a while to support the runners, no sign of RogerG though... Managed to keep going up Dumyat but glad I didn't attempt the whole thing, as nice a route as it is.

Note
(rest day)

A little tired from yesterday, plus my left knee was quite sore after the run and ceased up in the evening. More reasons for taking the day off were not required.

Thursday Aug 23, 2012 #

5 PM

Run - Terrain 1:09:44 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (35:00 @3) + (15:00 @4) + (4:44 @5) 11.95 km (5:50 / km) +352m 5:05 / km
shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR3

Have been half thinking about doing the Ochil 2000's on Saturday, so I thought it a good idea to test the water to see if it's a good idea or not. Didn't feel like driving anywhere so took off cross country from the house to find the nearest hill. Felt okay on the first hill (little) and bit better on the second (little bigger) but then then the legs just fell off, had no terrain strength at all to run down the hill home. Concluded that Saturday is probably not a good idea. Nice evening to be out and saw a fox, a couple of wee deer and a hare for my efforts though.

6 PM

Run - Trail warm up/down 18:26 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (12:00 @2) + (1:26 @3) 2.74 km (6:43 / km) +31m 6:22 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Warm up jog around Doune Ponds with Adam.

Run - Trail 8:47 [1] 1.27 km (6:55 / km) +3m 6:50 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Short loop of Doune Ponds with Adam to warm down.

Run - Orienteering race 36:00 intensity: (1:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) + (12:00 @4) + (3:00 @5) 6.53 km (5:31 / km) +131m 5:01 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 11

FVO WEE, Doune Ponds, 5.7km. Compared to the last few days I was moving okay today, though it may have been because it was pretty flat. Quite a bit of track and road running but also some lovely woods and a good course planned by Trevor (who also updated the map to show the wind blow). A lot colder and wetter than Austria!

Tuesday Aug 21, 2012 #

Note

Just sort of ran out of time today, was thinking a road bike would be nice but it kept hammering it down. Tomorrow.

Monday Aug 20, 2012 #

5 PM

Run - Trail 1:08:11 intensity: (12:00 @1) + (20:00 @2) + (25:00 @3) + (8:11 @4) + (3:00 @5) 12.09 km (5:39 / km) +307m 5:00 / km
shoes: Asics 1150 (2012)

First time doing the Bridge of Allan loop for months and a nice evening for it, slightly muddier than I was hoping though (hence had incompatible footwear).

Some young ned was practising shots on the golf course and he'd managed to get about 20 shot within several metres on the fairway, fair juice. However he decided to hit another one after I passed him and it whistled within several inches of my head. Not much point in shouting "four" when someone is running with there back to you. Mind you, it was probably intentional...

Couldn't get out of first gear on the hills again, I've been blaming fitness and the altitude but it still doesn't feel right when I push a little harder - it's as if I have an air restrictor on my turbo and I can't get the revs up enough so am just getting lag. Will give it a bit longer before I start worrying.

Note
(rest day)

Was due to run a middle distance event in Italy but after yesterday's traffic we decided it was more important to get to the airport than have a last bit of fun in the hills. Long day travelling but now back in Scotland.

Saturday Aug 18, 2012 #

4 PM

Run - Trail 40:00 intensity: (3:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (12:00 @4) + (5:00 @5) 2.65 km (15:06 / km) +293m 9:43 / km
shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR3

As specular as running gets? Staying in a hostel at the top of a ski run in the Dolomites and headed for a short run up the nearest peak before dinner, amazing evening with views that make you never to want to leave. If only there was time to go further. These are the sort of experiences that you need to recall when it's mid winter, dark and wet and the sofa is looking very inviting. In contrast, the rest of the day was spent stuck in Italian holiday traffic meaning we had to skip the planned sprint session.

Run - Orienteering 1:25:00 intensity: (6:00 @0) + (10:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) + (24:00 @3) + (15:00 @4) + (5:00 @5) 10.65 km (7:59 / km) +416m 6:41 / km
ahr:96 max:139 shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Hanging controls for the morning and afternoon exercises on Wildmoos, saw plenty of signs of moos but they remained illusive, wild or not. Nice woods, but pretty steep and not all that detailed.
12 PM

Run - Orienteering 30:21 intensity: (26 @0) + (4:57 @1) + (8:07 @2) + (8:48 @3) + (8:03 @4) 3.13 km (9:42 / km) +197m 7:23 / km
ahr:144 max:168 shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Out to the far end of the course with Lard, checking a few controls on the way. Waited at the control site observing runners (or lack of - was on the girls loop and due a virus most of them have had to sit training out for the day) until the course closed. Steep and hot.
2 PM

Run - Orienteering 20:00 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (5:00 @2) + (5:00 @3) + (5:00 @4) 1.9 km (10:32 / km) +126m 7:54 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Collecting the last few controls on Wildmoos. Feeling tired. (Left GPS running in the car.)
4 PM

Other 3:31 [0] 1.67 km (2:06 / km)

Toboggan run, failed to start my GPS until some way down. Fun, but disappointing slow. Major cramp in hip...

Run - Orienteering 43:00 intensity: (3:00 @0) + (10:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) + (5:00 @3) 3.8 km (11:18 / km) +129m 9:40 / km
ahr:131 max:153 shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Hanging the afternoon controls for the gang on Karersee (in Italy), lovely area, full of big rocks and depressions, mixed woods and framed by mighty limestone mountains.
1 PM

Run - Orienteering 47:42 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (8:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) + (10:00 @4) + (4:42 @5) 4.95 km (9:38 / km) +251m 7:41 / km
ahr:92 max:156 shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Afternoon relay session on Karersee, well timed as there was a mighty thunderstorm during out lunch break. Shadowed a few of the gang and arrived back at the changeover to discover a stream pouring through it! First time for a few days that I've got my heart rate up and body moving (abet only for a short time), it didn't feel great but it was at least responding! Cracking drive back through the Dolomites over a couple of high passes.

Note
(rest day)

Was thinking of an early morning jog but had to drop an athlete at Innsbruck airport and wasn't much motivated when I got back. Spent an hour or so mapping with the gang in the afternoon, which was very pleasant in the sunshine but attention spans were a little short!

Run - Orienteering 18:14 intensity: (8:14 @1) + (6:00 @2) + (4:00 @3) 1.37 km (13:16 / km) +46m 11:22 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Hanging controls for the lads, magic area, loads of knolls and rocks and springy but runnable underfoot.
12 PM

Run - Orienteering 22:57 intensity: (10:00 @0) + (10:00 @2) + (2:57 @3) 1.33 km (17:17 / km) +37m 15:10 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 11

More hanging in more lovely forest. Had to hand Si as well so took quite a while.
2 PM

Run - Trail 46:15 intensity: (10:00 @0) + (6:15 @1) + (15:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) 4.44 km (10:26 / km) +84m 9:31 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Collecting this time. Lots of fun untangling Si units from controls. Legs tired.

ahr:126 max:169 shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR3

Jog from the hotel up to Obernberg See to check out the mistakes I made in the middle on Saturday and then up the mountain behind with Liz, Florence and Lucy (note; never run up a a mountain with Florence or down one with Lucy!).

Sunday Aug 12, 2012 #

9 AM

Run - Trail warm up/down 10:00 intensity: (1:00 @1) + (5:00 @2) + (3:00 @3) + (1:00 @4) 0.89 km (11:14 / km) +99m 7:13 / km
shoes: Jalas 2012

Run - Orienteering race 1:11:37 intensity: (20:00 @2) + (40:00 @3) + (10:00 @4) + (1:37 @5) 8.48 km (8:27 / km) +349m 7:00 / km
shoes: Jalas 2012

Euromeeting Long, Serles. Started not knowing how much I'd do as I'm in no shape for a long race and need to be mobile for the rest of the week. A building hidden under the line resulted in a huge parallel error at #4 making the decision for me not to go too much further! Had been feeling dead until then anyway and couldn't move on hills. Nice forest and tough area, but not too challenging technically.

Saturday Aug 11, 2012 #

10 AM

Run - Trail warm up/down 25:39 intensity: (20:00 @3) + (5:39 @4) 2.88 km (8:55 / km) +465m 4:56 / km
shoes: Jalas 2012

Long hill up to the finish/assembly and an even longer one up to the start.

Run - Orienteering race 56:16 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (25:00 @3) + (13:00 @4) + (3:16 @5) 6.62 km (8:30 / km) +184m 7:28 / km
shoes: Jalas 2012

Euromeeting Middle, Obernberg See. 5.3km, 140m. What an area! Sort of like last years WOC terrain but good (sort of) underfoot, still very rugged and rough and maintaining pace and contact was hard. Suffered a little from the altitude but mostly from lack of fitness, orienteered quite well though (aside from one 2.5min lose-of-concentration) and really enjoyed it. Managed to beat more than half the British squad boys so a forfeit for them is now necessary - I like the shaving the head option but the victims aren't all too keen...
12 PM

Run - Trail warm up/down 8:01 [1] 1.21 km (6:39 / km)
shoes: Jalas 2012

Nice and easy back down the hill.

Friday Aug 10, 2012 #

Event: Euromeeting

Note

Spent the morning in Innsbruck hanging sprint training controls and the afternoon checking the athletes in after they'd finished (Euromeeting Sprint). Not sad to be missing the sprint race, it turned out to be easy and fast. Some good results from the team.

Thursday Aug 9, 2012 #

7 AM

Run - Trail 25:05 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (5:05 @3) 4.51 km (5:34 / km) +66m 5:11 / km
ahr:148 max:173 shoes: Asics 1150 (2012)

Morning jog with Lard along the river from the accommodation. Stunning place, so much so that I almost forgot about it being so early!
2 PM

Run - Orienteering 29:16 intensity: (2:04 @1) + (8:15 @2) + (17:13 @3) + (1:44 @4) 3.21 km (9:07 / km) +109m 7:48 / km
ahr:148 max:160 shoes: Jalas 2012

Euromeeting training, steep woods but good runnability. Stiff starting, felt good on the first train and awful on the second. Put it down to altitude (and lack of fitness).

Wednesday Aug 8, 2012 #

Note

All day travelling (7am to 11pm).

Tuesday Aug 7, 2012 #

Note

Beautiful day but not enough time to do everything that I wanted to do, decided to be mature and worked on the Dunblane map (surveyed Holme Hill and the Hydro) instead of going for a run.

Monday Aug 6, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Two days on, one day off, so a rest day it is. Lots and lots of time looking at the computer screen.

Sunday Aug 5, 2012 #

12 PM

Run - Trail 45:31 intensity: (17:00 @1) + (21:24 @2) + (7:07 @3) 7.84 km (5:48 / km) +80m 5:31 / km
ahr:131 max:161 shoes: Asics 1150 (2012)

With Lard out to Ashfield, his turn to puff like a train today. Very grateful for an easy and steady pace though as my legs didn't have a whole lot in them.

First consistent training week in an age, didn't do a lot of hours/miles but that wasn't the plan. Feel a whole lot more like a runner already though.

Run - Trail 1:39:54 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (30:00 @2) + (30:00 @3) + (15:00 @4) + (9:54 @5) 13.12 km (7:37 / km) +684m 6:02 / km
shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR3

Lovely day and a lovely run up a lovely mountain (Ben Venue) with RogerG, the company was acceptable! Started slow, but Rog was puffing like a steam engine from the off (he foolishly did too much yesterday!), tried to keep running but only just managed it, had no strength or recovery powers. Work to done. Dropped straight off the hill which was a lovely route, whereas the diversion through the forest was not!

Friday Aug 3, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Spent a few hours this morning mapping Laigh Hills and went for a walk in the evening, but nothing that could qualify as training, which was what I wanted as I'm still in the process of teaching my body to run again.

Thursday Aug 2, 2012 #

6 PM

Run - Trail 44:13 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (4:13 @4) 6.72 km (6:35 / km) +202m 5:43 / km
shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR3

From Poo-stix house with lard and Rosco, a nice easy jaunt up the hill to the and a loop around the reservoir by Dumyat. Good social run and a lovely evening, plenty of Olympics to be watched after.

Strength exercises 6:00 [1]

First attempt at some core exercises for months. Took it easy as I want to be able to move tomorrow!
5 PM

Run - Trail 39:00 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (15:00 @2) + (19:00 @3) 7.24 km (5:23 / km) +204m 4:43 / km
shoes: Asics Gel Enduro 3

Had to boot myself out and was fearing a complaining body, but actually felt half decent (as long as I didn't run too hard that is). Wet and slippery out but not muddy, which was a bonus. Appears to be stalking season, so may be time to day-glow it up a little!
