Mapping 1:15:00 [0]

Wasn't expecting much of the day so didn't start out with the intention of doing any mapping. Weather was looking good so ventured out for what was left of the daylight (5.45 hours), some nice bits, some rough bits and some very nice bits today, plus found a mattress; not missing much to be completely comfortable now.

Tuesday Nov 29, 2011 #

Note

Not a bad day for Scotland (wet, windy and cold) but decided to stay indoors anyways. Cough still staying put as well.

Mapping 1:15:00 [0]

5 hours in Falkirk, mostly really nice stuff, including Roughcastle Roman fort - it was just like the ones in Asterix! Saw a group of workers changing a drainage pipe under the path, there were 6 of them, 1 working the digger and 5 watching him (no one watching for pedestrians), each with van of their own. Efficient?
Here's the bit of map around the wheel, how good does it look!!!
6 PM

Run - Road 5:02 intensity: (1:35 @0) + (1:14 @1) + (55 @2) + (1:18 @3) 0.64 km (7:50 / km)
ahr:134 max:153 shoes: Asics Gel GT 1120 07

Down to circuits with Lard. Not nice out.

Pilates 35:21 intensity: (34:35 @0) + (46 @1) 2.13 km (16:35 / km) +48m 14:54 / km
ahr:70 max:120

Lard taking it easy on us this evening which was for me at least, most welcome.

Pilates 19:56 intensity: (2:38 @0) + (13:52 @1) + (2:55 @2) + (15 @3) + (16 @4) 0.79 km (25:18 / km) +2m 24:59 / km
ahr:115 max:168 shoes: Asics Gel GT 1120 07

As still far from full health I took these very easy, trying to keep the heart rate down. Seemed to have worked.

Run - Orienteering 1:17:10 intensity: (35:26 @1) + (27:05 @2) + (14:39 @3) 8.9 km (8:40 / km) +279m 7:30 / km
ahr:128 max:157 shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Hanging controls for the Scottish Score Championships on Dumyat. Hung the controls on the mountain and then checked the ones in Yellowcraig Wood and The Hermitage . Sunny morning but a mighty cold and strong wind on the hill - was glad to make it back down into the woods. Not healthy enough to manage anything faster.
11 AM

Run - Orienteering 15:47 intensity: (9:50 @1) + (5:57 @2) 2.43 km (6:29 / km) +16m 6:17 / km
ahr:118 max:144 shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Hanging the easy controls around the lake at Stirling Uni and then checking the ones that Lard had just done.
3 PM

Run - Orienteering 1:00:27 intensity: (4:03 @1) + (21:55 @2) + (32:40 @3) + (1:49 @4) 8.06 km (7:30 / km) +360m 6:08 / km
ahr:142 max:162 shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Back up Dumyat to collect controls. Much warmer. But you're always going to be warm going up Dumyat from the University! Gareth had moved one of my controls slightly so when I got there I assumed that it was missing as I couldn't see it. Dooh! Don't think that either location was actually correct though, but that's what you get with a map that's getting on for 30 years old.

Saturday Nov 26, 2011 #

Note

Much as yesterday, both on the health and the weather front. So another day indoors for me.

Friday Nov 25, 2011 #

Note
(rest day)

Still got the chesty cough and not feeling brilliant, so taking it easy for the day. Will hopefully be bounding around again soon. Good day to have off as it was (and this is the correct meteorological term) right minging outside today - glad I didn't undertake the camping option last night - though I would at least have had a towel.

Mapping 1:30:00 [0]

Back at Falkirk (6.30 hours). Upon my wanderings today I came across a towel and a carpet, together with the tent (and two fire extinguishers) from a few days ago the accommodation option is looking more and more appealing... Also found two tennis balls - Falkirk dogs (or maybe tennis players?) can't be that bright.

Run - Terrain 1:26:22 intensity: (1:05 @0) + (33:52 @1) + (19:15 @2) + (22:25 @3) + (8:42 @4) + (1:03 @5) 11.91 km (7:15 / km) +349m 6:19 / km
ahr:138 max:190 shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR2

A nice and easy club run from Jon's.... Turned out to be nearly and hour and a half of scrambling up and down mountains and plodding through bogs! It was great!!! Good mixed group out so pace was easy, which was favourable as I've picked up a bit of a cough today and was no wanting to overdo it until I know what it is. Followed by some much needed soup (thanks MC) and cakes after.

Mapping 1:30:00 [0]

A cracking day and out mapping at Falkirk for all of it (6.30 hours). Found some right horrible bits today but also some amazing stuff. Also found (in the middle of some grott) a darts board and later on a packed up self erecting tent. That's accommodation and entertainment sorted should I ever get stuck in Falkirk then.

Mapping 1:30:00 [0]

First day on a new site; Falkirk Wheel (6.15 hours). Looking like a well mixed bag; some well nice forest, open areas, a lot of landscaped and newly planted mining areas (needs time), several railways and canals and of course the wheel itself. Away from the wheel the forest is full of junk. Locals not looking friendly.
6 PM

Run - Road 5:04 intensity: (1:24 @0) + (3:40 @1) 0.91 km (5:33 / km)
ahr:102 max:114 shoes: Asics Gel GT 1120 07

Down to circuits with a very late Lard.

Pilates 36:29 intensity: (35:44 @0) + (45 @1) +1m
ahr:74 max:107

Back aching this week, had to take a few exercises handy.

Circuits 25:20 intensity: (2:01 @0) + (17:25 @1) + (2:54 @2) + (2:36 @3) + (24 @4) +1m
ahr:120 max:163 shoes: Asics Gel GT 1120 07

Some hard bits in this session, completely lost coordination a few times... Good work out.

Run - Trail 33:27 intensity: (11 @0) + (23:40 @1) + (9:32 @2) + (4 @3) 5.03 km (6:39 / km) +139m 5:51 / km
ahr:125 max:145 shoes: Asics Trabuco 12 WR

Round of golf with JonX, Adam and Alison. Jon took so long to get ready I thought I was going to have to log this as Tuesdays training!!!

ahr:130 max:156 shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR2

Long slow run with Adam up Dumyat from Dunblane, was due to be joined by both JonX and RogerG but both were apparently both feeling a little delicate. Nice slow pace and good chat, felt nice and easy but was surprisingly tired all afternoon.

Run - Orienteering race 49:52 intensity: (2 @0) + (19 @1) + (8 @2) + (14:37 @3) + (34:41 @4) + (5 @5) 6.91 km (7:13 / km) +196m 6:19 / km
ahr:162 max:175 shoes: VJ Falcons 11

FVO Club Champs, North Third, Brown; 6.6km. What a great area this is and what a fun course, plus it's always amazing to run on your own map as you know exactly what and how everything is mapped! As a result I hardly lost any time, maybe 10-15 seconds on two controls. Lost a lot more having tired legs, which didn't matter but was frustrating as it was so much fun out there. Thanks RogerG for organising an excellent event - something like 60 people out for a Club Champs - amazing.

Collecting controls - went to check a site that a few people had issue with 188 - between knolls). They need moving maybe .5mm, but that's all, true there are other unmapped knolls in the area but they are too small to map at this scale.

Didn't much feel like a run today so it was effort to get out, also feeling surprisingly tired, but I did enjoy it once out and it was so mega warm that I had to ditch the jacket. Had a disagreement with a tree where an issue of girth resulted in contact with my body. Not sure if it was the trees or my girth that was the issue... Took in a figure of 8 loop down to BoA where I found a new (for me) path back up towards Dunblane.

Mapping 45:00 [0]

Just about finished Murrays Wood (3.5 hours), the only bit left looks nasty (thick young birch) so decided not to venture into it(would take ages for little gain) and marked it all as green.

Was all out of sorts mapping this morning, ying yang/zen/mojo/whatever not there, think it was because I lost my favourite pencil last night.

Mapping 1:00:00 [3]

Back to Murray's Wood, 6 hours there today and still got quite a bit more to do. Plenty of low visibility stuff though and mostly good run, and it was a lovely day to be out (neck still at me though).
6 PM

Run - Trail warm up/down 15:25 intensity: (38 @0) + (7:49 @1) + (2:48 @2) + (3:07 @3) + (50 @4) + (13 @5) 1.54 km (9:59 / km) +39m 8:52 / km
ahr:138 max:176 shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Loop of Doune Ponds and up to the start for the first FVO night event of the season.

Run - Orienteering race 38:34 intensity: (30 @1) + (11 @2) + (1:26 @3) + (36:05 @4) + (22 @5) 6.44 km (5:59 / km) +107m 5:32 / km
ahr:167 max:175 shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Night O, Doune. New extended map into some very nice bits of woodland, mass start (about 20 people) and a very enjoyable and well gaffled course by JonX.

Start to a very vague clearing, couldn't find the start on the map and then got stuck in trees so was some way down by the first control. Got into a tussle with Grump for the rest of the first butterfly before Hector joined us for the rest of the course. Was fun and an excellent night for running, though I felt some way from my best. Nixon disappeared off the front at some stage and won easily while Hector took 30 seconds out of me on the run-in!

Run - Trail warm up/down 12:10 intensity: (5:16 @1) + (6:54 @2) 1.24 km (9:47 / km) +4m 9:38 / km
ahr:128 max:135 shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Warm down with grump collecting a few controls. Didn't start the GPS until half way around.

Mapping 45:00 [0]

Day off from running, partly because my legs are tired but also because I slept kind of funny last night and I can't look to the left today (the same muscle that caused my neck discomfort after it was fractured is responsible).

Did 4 hours mapping in the morning but couldn't manage any more due to the neck. Extending the Polmaise map into Murry's Wood; soft underfoot but a great mixture of woods with plenty of low visibility. Every section of Polmaise/Sauchie has it's own distinct characteristics.

Pilates 35:00 [2]

Another good session and much needed. Thought pilates was supposed to be relaxing - my core is knackered!

A great session, really enjoyed it, though I am still useless at press-ups.

ahr:151 max:175 shoes: Jalas 2010

A tough but hugely enjoyable run with RogerG from Callander, terrain pretty much all the way, including plenty of marsh, hills and some lovely wood at the end. Roger was stronger than me climbing the big hill, even when he was reduced to a hand-on-knees-walk I had to keep jogging to keep up. Certainly mapping potential here.

Around Stirling Uni and Blairlogie Woods (?) with a map and a biro looking for corrections. Found plenty so spent a lot of time stationary (was actually out for 1.30). Mega warm again so was well toasty in a jacket and shorts.
12 PM

Run - Terrain 46:45 intensity: (13 @0) + (5:25 @1) + (20:29 @2) + (18:35 @3) + (2:03 @4) 7.65 km (6:07 / km) +149m 5:34 / km
ahr:143 max:168 shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR2

Run back to Dunblane from Dumyat. Needed to get the legs moving after the stop-start nature of the mapping. Was dead going up the first hill but improved a little after that. As happy as I am with my Kanadia's they are completely useless at lateral grip and I once again found myself wiping out nicely. Still going to get a new pair though.
Thought the high car park on the Dumyat road (in the pine trees) was a public one, but obviously not any more as it has been fenced off and used for storing hay bales.

ahr:135 max:160

Exactly the same route as last Friday, but several seconds longer! (Actually lost waiting to cross the A9). Wind was completely opposite to last week and I got to Blackford about 6 minutes down, however the climb up Sheriffmuir was cushy with a following wind and I cruised up despite having no energy in my legs. Was hoping for a little sunshine but sun remained shy all day - didn't stop people mowing their grass though! In November!! In Scotland!!!

Last missing bit of Sauchie completed (4.30 hours), was expecting it to be nasty and difficult but it proved otherwise, helped of course by being a beautiful day. Also a bit of work tidying up Polmaise. Only Craigs Wood to the far south to do now.

Another lovely FVO social run around Sauchie, started with Gaz, Elle and Mark and then veered off with Rosco and Adam for an additional loop. Minging weather on the way there but was actually quite warm and dry out, aside from the trails which were minging. Nice pace, especially on the hills meant that I wasn't suffering too much from yesterday.

I love running when it's like this, not the most inspiring route (Sheriffmuir-Core Hill - Ben Buck), especially as most of it was in the mist, but it was fabulous to be out and able to run and hence thoroughly enjoyed myself. Tired after 2 hours but still running well. Bonus to find a chocolate and banana Korny bar left over from WOC to enjoy afterwards!

5.15 mapping, cold out today, had to get the long-johns out for the first time. Mist never lifted so it felt like I was in dense undergrowth all day, kind of spooky having 2m boulders appearing out of the gloom from about 20m.

Deans and Dechmont, Livingston. Black. An event not really to my liking, most of the time was spent avoiding bonfire debris in an housing estate, interesting but not detailed enough to be difficult. A nice wee bit of woods in the middle but otherwise it was pavement pounding, hence I have a blister on the end of my big toe. Courses were planned for a cancelled event last year and it was obviously that nothing had been checked since - found a new building, fence, path and had a control on a missing tree! Good to do a slightly faster than normal run but would have probably have preferred to be in the hills on a day this this.

One of the most enjoyable cycles that I've done, despite the road being wet and the wind being existent when I had presumed that it wasn't! Lovely back road winding through the drumlins between Braco and Blackford before the long climb (into a headwind) up to Sheriffmuir. Road was far nicer than I was expecting, with no walls, fences or power lines it felt wild and remote and was stunning in the golden light of the setting sun. Quite why they decided to have a battle up here I fail to understand (or indeed build a pub), but the views were terrific across to the Braes of Doune where a low cloud blanketed the hill meaning you could only see the blades of the wind turbines twisting through the mist.

Last big chunk of Sauchie (4 hours), area of new plantation near the house, turned out to be really nice, a few too many linear features maybe, but some nice contours and woods. Found a women's Trek 800 Sport, which aside from needing a good oil and missing a back wheel was in good condition (looked like it'd been there for the summer), so if anyone out there is wanting a women's mountain bike I know where you can find one!

A most enjoyable evening, starting with a night run around Allan Water with a bunch of FVOers and followed by some cracking soup and banter at Gaz 'n' Elle's. Pace was nice and relaxed aside from the climb up the side of the golf course where I decided to put a bit more effort in. Roger didn't seem to have a problem keeping up with JonX and Rosco disappeared.

4 hours to finish the main bit of Sauchie, just some bits around the edge to do now. Had a very pleasant conversation with a somewhat irate red squirrel, wasn't able to get to the source of his problems so let him be. Also met several grey squirrels who legged it and hid as soon as I approached - they don't do themselves any favours in the popularity ratings and it's no wonder that the red is more popular.

Is there a better way to spend an hour I thought to myself as I was running through beech wood watching cars queueing for Keir roundabout? Not as muddy as I was expecting and shoes coped well, my core on the other hand took numerous opportunities to remind me that it had been activated yesterday.
