Run - Road 13:05 [2] 2.6 km (5:02 / km) +55m 4:33 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2140

Was going to go for a whole 15 minutes today but decoded to cut it back when I hit the first hill; legs were still spend from Saturday. Did the same route as then but took it easier.

Physio exercises 10:00 [0]
(injured)

Aching all over after yesterdays efforts, so taking it easy today. Will try and do a little every second day I think.

Been 100 days since my crash, so long yet still so far to go until I’m completely fixed. It’s such a strange memory now as it I doesn’t feel like it actually happened and instead that I’ve just been lazy for the past few months. I look normal and move normally now but I still can’t do the things I want to do, it makes me feel like a fraud as to an unknowing third party I would appear to be completely recovered. It’s a frustrating period of limbo which is neither broken nor fixed. Still, it may be taking a long time but I do have a lot of support and progress is still positive.

Run - Road 12:15 [3] 2.6 km (4:43 / km) +55m 4:16 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2140

Loop around Endcliffe Vale and Fulwood Road. I was a machine. I owed the hill on Woodvale Rd. Unstoppable I was. Just a shame that 12 minutes had me worn out… But it was at least (nearly) proper running and it was only my lower back that was giving me any issues while running. Another small step forward.

I remembered. Back now sore.

Note
(injured)

Sort of lost motivation as it got dark. Did manage to do most (some) of my physio exercises thought buy time still seems to disappear even though I’m not doing much. Think that I may be making too many excuses now, just need to get out and do more exercise and it’s not going to hurt (not much anyway).

Note
(injured) (rest day)

A rest day but not really needed, but did manage to remember to do most of my physio exercises though – maybe if I start logging them I’ll be more motivated to remember to do them?

Bike - Static 35:00 [2]
(injured)

SYO club night, went along to be my usual hindrance as I can’t join in with all that many of the exercises/games yet. Sat on the exercise bike for a while though and cranked up the resistance a few times to give my legs a bit more of a work out. I do believe that time does actually slow down when you’re on an exercise bike – there must be some sort of connection between them and back holes.

Note
(injured)

Planning on running but the physio squished me about a bit more than I was expecting and that, together with a bit more mapping, made my back and shoulder ache a little more than is comfortable so called it a day and sat on my arse instead.

Monday Nov 23, 2009 #

Note
(injured)

No excuse today. I went out to do some mapping in the morning and get drenched so called it a day after an hour. They couldn’t face going back out again in the afternoon won the clouds have drifted away. Internet now working at home :)

SPOOK relays, quality race, think it was as much fun watching as running. Good variety with The Edge campus, Bingham Park and Endcliffe Park being used. Good courses planned by Richard meant that the top teams were never far apart and that they started the third leg (Micr-O) together. Was in the woods watching and it was a real treat – to think that I always though that OJ could read a map… Despite some shoulder charging by Camel at the last control OJ held on to take the victory for SPOOK. Whoop!

Traditional Captains evening in The Grindstone. More cheating in the beer races than in the Micr-O but the best team won (however EUOC don't stand a chance at BUCS). Would have liked to have got around to catch up with a few more people but my injuries restricted me to my chair for most of the evening. Still, I am still improving.

Saturday Nov 21, 2009 #

Note
(injured)

Did want to do some exercise today but standing at the finish of both races in the city chase meant that my back was knackered (but bearable) by the time the day was done. It was also dark and wet and I’ve become soft after having so much time off.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Rest day today, well earned I believe (besides, my legs are too sore/tired to do anything!)

Run - Road 10:20 [2] 2.2 km (4:42 / km) +40m 4:18 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2120

Legs were completely dead this morning, felt like I’d just done a mountain marathon! Really struggled in the wind and on the hill up alongside The Edge. Still, my shoulder and neck were grand and my back was only a little sore.

Saw the physio in the Hallamshire this afternoon. Very nice girl; did loads of flexibility stuff with me and seemed to know what she was on about. Hope she does and I need quite a bit of fixing.

Run - Road 10:00 [1] 2.0 km (5:00 / km) +30m 4:39 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2120

Quite active today but all very easy, jogged along to the SYO club night (3.5mins), did the warm up (3mins) and then jogged home again (3.5mins). Also sat on an exercise bike in the gym for a while the rest were warming up/messing around on gym balls. John had planned an evil exercise in while you had to run across the hall and pick up a bit on map and say if the control is on either a spur or re-entrant. Apparently I don’t always know the difference!

Run - Road 9:20 [2] 1.8 km (5:11 / km) +25m 4:51 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2120

Despite yesterdays soreness and activities I felt pretty good running. When I say pretty good I mean that I was able to run but it was bloody hard work, was actually really slow and lost my form after about 5 minutes – it’s going to be a long slow build up. On the plus side though my neck and shoulder didn’t hurt at all.

Spent most of the light part of the day mapping Hallam campus – a pretty good little area. Looking forward to gettign it done and joined up with the rest of the Sheffield urban maps.

Strength exercises 4:00 [1]
(injured)

A few easy exercise to try and styart building up a bit of strength in my back and shoulder.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Was planning on running but stressed my back while putting my bike (yes, the same one - now fixed) in the back of the car. Lots of muscle soreness but it doesn’t feel like anything more. Bit of rest.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Headed out to the Oing on Eyam Moor, too sore to do any myself but did have a good two hour walk with the old ones and had some great views of the area. Surprised to see just how few people can navigate in a smooth fashion, most people stopping an awful lot. Marched up the hill (about 5 minutes) to get my legs and lungs working a bit.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Was planning on cranking up the hours a bit this evening with a turbo-training session, but the available time evaporated leaving me with none spare remaining.

Did get the all clear from the hospital on my shoulder though, so I am now officially discharged and I supposed assumed to be better. Shame it doesn’t quite feel like that yet though.

Run - Road 4:25 [1]
(injured) shoes: Asics Gel GT 1120 07

Not quite sure that I’d classify it as a run but i did managed a run of sorts back from the SYO training at The Edge. Glad it wasn’t any further, as although my legs wanted to go further the rest of my body had had enough; neck, shoulder and back starting to hurt and I was even getting a stitch. This is going to be a long slow recovery yet.

On the positive side, the NHS are moving my physio from the NGH to Hallamshire as they should be able to se me there before the end of January – not sure how long it will be though.

Tuesday Nov 10, 2009 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Need to sort myself out; there was no reason that I didn’t do any exercise today other than sheer laziness. Pull yourself together boy! No real excuse anymore either as I’m feeling completely normal in everyday life. Will give it a run of some sorts a go in the next day or so.

Monday Nov 9, 2009 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Couldn’t face the turbo-trainer when I got home so I had yet another day doing very little other than parking myself on my ever increasing back side.

Got a letter from the NHS informing me that they would try very hard to get me to see a physio before the end of January...

Sunday Nov 8, 2009 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Mad busy today but again no quality exercise, though I did manage to finish the bit of mapping that Ricky wanted doing for the SPOOK relays.

Saturday Nov 7, 2009 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Bit of an epic day for me in my current condition. Started with a walk around half of the Green course in Limb Valley (nice area, poor map: needs remapping). First time walking off paths and up/down hills, was hard work but managed grand.

Afternoon spent helping coach the SYO juniors at Eccy Woods, didn’t get actively involved (as they all move too quick for me) but went through the exercises with them before/after they did them. Enthusiastic and positive group will some real talent.

Evening spent in Hillbrough at Bryn and P’s going away thing. Despite declaring his love for me in Hungry Bryn didn’t seem to be too upset at the thought of not being able to see me again... Back gave up after so much use today and had to spend the end of the evening reclined in a big chair.

11 weeks gone.

Friday Nov 6, 2009 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

No time to exercise today even should I have had the incentive to do; good work dinner to be enjoyed instead.

Thursday Nov 5, 2009 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Had time, had the opportunity but I just couldn’t make myself do anything. One of those really flat days when you just want it to end so you can go to bed and start better tomorrow. I don’t like it when I don’t achieve anything worthwhile with my time.

Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

A bit of an easy day but that’s grand. Went along to the SYO club night to see all those who turned up for the TV cameras being put though a decent set of core exercises. There are going to be some very aching bodies tomorrow.

Bike - Static 30:00 [3]
(injured)

Struggled with the motivation to get on the bike today after a long day at work and a longer drive than I am comfortable with (rush hour traffic: can people really cope with it every day???), but was glad that I did and passed the time by watching James May creating a garden from Plasticine for Chelsea.

Monday Nov 2, 2009 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Had good intentions this evening but I was tired and a little sore when I got home and then GG convinced me to beat him repeatedly (on a computer game I hasten to add) so ran out of time to get anything done.

Bike - Static 30:00 [2]
(injured)

Determined to get back on the bike today, it was easy effort wise and the boredom was somewhat diverted by watching the end of an old James Bond, but it was still challenging to stay awake. Also tried a few shoulder exercises so I think that it may be a little stiff tomorrow.
