Note
(rest day)

Taking no chances; resting shin and cold.

Wednesday Apr 29, 2009 #

Run - Trail 13:00 [2] 2.0 km (6:30 / km) +100m 5:12 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 09

Prance around the woods to warm up!

Run - Orienteering race 38:15 [3] 6.4 km (5:59 / km) +170m 5:17 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 09

Tankersley Spring Cup. No spring or strength in my running so settled into a steady but smooth pace and enjoyed being out on a beautiful evening. Only missed one control which was the 4th time out of 4 that I have missed in that area (No 2) and went in with the assumption that I'd miss it. I sure can be stupid sometimes. Tried to break in my new VJ's again but they're still not up to a proper race; was getting quite sore heals by the end of this. Also forgot to bring a sweat band and had stinging eyes for much of the run; why doesn't this affect me in normal running and why doesn't it affect others orienteering???

Run - Trail warm up/down 10:00 [1] 1.2 km (8:20 / km) +30m 7:24 / km

Slow and easy warm down with OJ and the ShUOC boys. Shin still a bit sore but I don't think any worse.

Note
(rest day)

With the remnants of my cold and my left shin still sore I thought it better not to train today. Saw the hill crew somewhere in the middle of their session running past the Dram Shop, wanted to join in so just as well that I was late as rest in what both my lungs and shin need.

Circuits 40:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Gel GT 1120 07

Felt utter pants, knew that I didn't have a lot of energy due to the dregs of my cold but was expecting to feel a bit better than I did. More rest needed I think. Even though I took the session very easy and skipped half the cardio exercises I was still struggling. Guess it also doesn't help that I haven't done any strength work in some time.

Run - Trail 1:16:50 [1] 14.3 km (5:22 / km) +230m 4:58 / km
shoes: Asics 2120

Rivelin Dam with Matt. Early trot in the sunshine, very slow due to wheezy chest and Matt?s lack of training but good to be out after a week of inactivity. Think that this is probably the lowest training week that I?ve done since using AP (2.5 years). Hopefully not too many more like this.

Ran along the dam wall in Rivelin and got spotted by a Ranger, wasn?t worried about us though as they were out trying to catch bikers using the footpaths through the woods.

Note
(sick)

Still a little chesty so don't want to run, no time to get the bike out but should be back on my feet tomorrow.

Friday Apr 24, 2009 #

Note
(sick)

Nearly there, may manage a gander tomorrow if life will let me fit it in.

Thursday Apr 23, 2009 #

Note
(sick)

Now really just a cough; will take a few days yet to pass though. Good to have a clearer head though.

Wednesday Apr 22, 2009 #

Note
(sick)

Still stuffed up but improving; improvements not helped by seeing the Saw Docters this evening as mt body didn't need any aditional stress!

Tuesday Apr 21, 2009 #

Note
(sick)

Completely bunged up, light headed and a dribbly nose. Such joy. That young Mr Stevenson has a lot to answer for.

Monday Apr 20, 2009 #

Note
(sick)

Was planning on doing the Trunce but from about 2 my head started to become heavy and my nose started to drip. Boo, looks like a few days feeling sorry for myself now :-(

Run - Orienteering race 1:18:17 [5] 10.5 km (7:27 / km) +580m 5:51 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons

Graythwaite Regional. Looking forward to this event all season, didn't care about the map scale or national event status as it's a quality area and worth travelling to run on. A little rougher than it was in the past and the vegetation mapping hasn't been kept up to date (dark green was usually passable with a little care). Very happy with my physical form but wasn't very fluid over the first few, lost 1.30 on an easy control where the map was a little iffy and chose the wrong route on the long leg and lost another 2.30. Great to be so close to OJ but also a little frustrating as it would have been great to beat him! Good course, great area but crappy paper (plastic) used for the map which wore off where folded.

Run - Trail warm up/down 25:00 [2] 3.5 km (7:09 / km) +120m 6:06 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons

Nice jog up the hill to the start in the sunshime and a trot around the field after.

Saturday Apr 18, 2009 #

Run - Trail 30:00 [2] 3.0 km (10:00 / km) +150m 8:00 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons

Was planning on running the time trial but spent so long hanging tapes (where I saw a 1m grass snake - my first) and getting everything ready that I didn't have time to eat, then ran out of time for a warm up so decided to rest for tomorrow instead. Tough course though and it would have hurt to run it hard. Impressive times by the winners on both courses.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Leg still bothering me so there must be something wrong somewhere. No time to run today as straight on the train after work up to the Lakes.

Thursday Apr 16, 2009 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Carbon copy of yesterday.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Lower left shin still tender so not going to run on it for a few days. Was thinking of a cycle when I got home but it started pissing it down as soon as I got home so I decided to call it a rest day.

Tuesday Apr 14, 2009 #

Run - Trail 1:09:10 [2] 13.4 km (5:10 / km) +240m 4:44 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2120

Really had to drag myself out today, post race blues I guess, but glad that I did as it was a lovely and mild evening for running. Did the Rivelin Dam loop and took it nice and easy, but my left shin is still sore so I think a day or so off running may be necessary, will see how it feels tomorrow.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Excellent weekend and I think that I enjoyed it more than I would have the JK. Terrain was different and new which made it more interesting, even if the weather wasn't quite as warm as we would have liked. Disappointed with my lack of aggression in the races and at how tired I was feeling in the sprint, but happy with my navigation. Lower part of my left shin is also slightly sore, not sure why but probably from the steep descents, even though they were mostly soft underfoot. Only real downside of the weekend was the amount of thorns that I got in my hands and the itchy rash given off by running into a caterpillar nest. May well be back next year.

Run - Orienteering race 43:36 [5] 5.4 km (8:04 / km) +275m 6:26 / km
shoes: Inov8

Spanish Middle Distance Championships. Nicest area of the weekend, lots of spur gully type terrain and more runnable than the other forest areas. Decent warm up as well courtesy of a 2km walk to the start. Too many hesitations for my liking and no real flow, but felt reasonable and enjoyed the course.

Run - Orienteering race 44:15 [5] *** 6.2 km (7:08 / km) +270m 5:52 / km
spiked:18/19c shoes: Inov8

Spanish Relay Distance Championships. An even earlier start for this but got the eating a bit more right. Very cold wind today meaning that I (and everyone else) was well cold waiting for the start. Easier area and not so bushy and even an odd track of field to run in meant that it was quite a bit faster than yesterday but still very steep. Ran first with Danny and Kieran.

Run - Orienteering race 27:43 [5] 2.6 km (10:40 / km) +140m 8:24 / km
shoes: Inov8

Spanish Sprint Distance Championships. More food issues as there wasn't enough time to get a good feed between the relay and this race, with the result again. Fabulous sprint (although slightly long) around the old town and into a bit of woods. Again very steep and my legs had absolutely nothing to give on the hills, but my biggest probelm was failing to work out that the start triangle was actually 200m from the start and way around the other side of the castle. Lost a minute there but otherwise got it right and enjoyed it.

Run - Trail warm up/down 8:00 [2] 1.0 km (8:00 / km) +50m 6:24 / km

Run - Orienteering race 1:27:11 [5] **** 9.2 km (9:29 / km) +450m 7:37 / km
spiked:15/16c shoes: Inov8

Spanish Classic Distance Championships. Early start as we were foreigners and a little too much of a lie in meant that we had 20 minutes between breakfast and running. Just made the start on time but stomach was grumbling for the first half and my legs were very unhappy with the lack of a warm up. Got going about half way round and enjoyed the second half, despite it being incredibly steep and busy.

Run - Trail warm up/down 5:00 [2] 0.6 km (8:20 / km)
shoes: Inov8

Run - Trail 36:15 [2]
shoes: Asics 2120

Stopped off at Tankersley on the way home. Amazing evening; sun shining, birds singing and woodruff and celandines carpeting the forest. Unfortunately my body wasn't in as joyous a mood as nature was and I struggled around feeling very average.

Tuesday Apr 7, 2009 #

Note
(rest day)

Still feel completely drained and very busy, so stayed indoors.

Monday Apr 6, 2009 #

Circuits 40:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 2120

Not many around this evening resulting in a very causal atmosphere; did the rounds with Neill B who was feeling as tired and lethargic as I was. More effort spent on talking than actual exercises I think.

Warm up/down 20:00 [2] 2.5 km (8:00 / km) +100m 6:40 / km
shoes: Asics 2120

Down to Goodwin, warm up with the few who are still around and a walk (with a little jogging) home. Feel completely drained. Need a nice and easy week.

Sunday Apr 5, 2009 #

Unspecified (Paintballing) 30:00 [1]

Not a lot of exercise but a lot of sweating, movement and considerable pain. Only got a few minor hits (aside from my team mate Conor shooting me on my foot at close range) until the rather unfriendly last game - shoot the stag and best man. Got plastered from all sides but only one real bruise and got off very lightly compared to Boyzone who will be moving gingerly for the next few days...

Run - Orienteering 1:30:00 [4]
shoes: VJ Falcons 09

Very enjoyable (but very long!) star relay planned by Aislinn and Jonny. Ran in pairs - the experienced one putting the control out and the beginner collecting it. Ran with Stewart's girl Fiona, who was an excellent runner but had never orienteerd. Shadowed her on her bits (which she was getting the hang of, but she always wanted to run rather than look at the map) and ran my bits (map memory) so never got a rest. Turned out to be quite a tiring session.

Unspecified (Marsh rugby) 45:00 [5]

Headed up into the hills at an easy pace (as we had Mr Mein in tow) to find a suitable bog for the afternoons activities. Found a cracker and proceeded to play football. This lasted about 5 minutes whereupon it suddenly changed to rugby and a far better spectacle was created. Very deep, very smelly, very cold and very, very, very hard work but much fun was had by all. Possibly the hardest training session that I have ever done?

Run - Trail 40:00 [3] 5.5 km (7:16 / km) +200m 6:09 / km
shoes: Inov8

Those of us that didn't completely kill ourselves in the marsh headed up the valley a bit further and then back along the ridge to the Lion and Lamb for a great view down over Grasmere. We all completely bonked on this run - the rugby was obviously even harder than it felt!

Friday Apr 3, 2009 #

Run - Trail 40:50 [2] 7.2 km (5:40 / km) +150m 5:08 / km
shoes: Inov8

Evening leg losner with NeilD. An easy pace and only one wee hill but felt really good and bouncy and was glad that we made the effort to get out - running in the Lakes is always special. Was getting pretty dark by the time we got home.

Thursday Apr 2, 2009 #

Note
(rest day)

Was planning on doing intervals but work took over and I ran out of time :(

Run - Orienteering 44:00 [4] ** 6.3 km (6:59 / km) +280m 5:43 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: VJ Falcons 09

Steep and physical Spring Cup event at Blacka; not really what my legs wanted today. Pinned my control card on my waist for the first time ever today; it will be my last, gave up and held it in my hand after the first few as I had to virtually lie on the ground to punch. Tried to run hard at the start but it was apparent half way up the first hill that it was going to be tough. Also breaking in a new pair of shoes which were very unstable running down hills and on slopes.
One control missing and a few more hard to find (hidden in pits) and the map was well out of date; all this resulted in quite a large group forming which I was surprised to stay near the front of as I was barely moving by that stage. Fun though and the run down the hill at the end was good, an amazing and mild evening as well. Unlike some, I used ALL the marked crossing points...

Run - Trail warm up/down 20:00 [1] 2.5 km (8:00 / km) +65m 7:05 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 09

Not much of an attempt at a warm up (5 minutes) but a slightly better warm down with CFD, Shminty and Danger (Camel had gone missing).
