Orienteering race 46:38 [4] 3.4 km (13:43 / km) +160m 11:06 / km

Middle Distance national O-meet: up around Trüebsee (below the Ttlis): started out well and could interpret the map to the first 2 controls (it was all above timberline and very fine detailed landscape full of ridges, hill, re-entrants, lakes, swamps and more. Then to no.3, I was asked twice where they were and after I rolled for the 3rd time underneath a barbed wire fence I must have completely lost my focus. I just couldn't find my flag but saw lots of others. Once I was way too low and had to climb, then I was not far enough. Finally, with help from the guy to whom I had showed where he was before, I found my control. From then on, I orienteered quite well, still had lots of hesitations or was too slow running downhill. After about 2/3 into the course, it started raining, then hailing, then lightning and thunder the same moment, and I got quite scared and hurried back to the finish and on to the event center which was the middle station of the gondola. Whew, I was completely soaked and happy to have made it. However, the few behind me who were still out were told to stop and immediately seek shelter, so the course did not count for them. I was lucky and came in 8th.

Running 52:30 [3] 5.24 km (10:01 / km) +112m 9:03 / km

Trying to get my muscles into running mode; they didn't like it. Started slowly to pick up speed more and more towards the end. But felt good, I felt so tired and lethargic.

Mountain Biking 13:56 [2] 3.71 km (3:45 / km) +44m 3:33 / km

Warm-up to the start, 2x

Bike O race 49:18 [5] 9.4 km (5:15 / km) +222m 4:41 / km

Long-O Masters Series in Epinal. It was kind of an uninspiring course with long sections just following one particular dirt road in the forest. So, my mind started wandering. At a short section from 3 to 4, it was also kind of easy and I followed the trail down, turn right, go uphill to a bend to the left onto a trail and there was the flag, not. All of a sudden, it jolted me out of my passiveness and where was I? So I searched back down and up again, always ending at the same spot. Hmm, heard the minutes ticking away and it was actually SO easy! I decided that I must be where I thought it was and that I needed to go a bit further as the 1:15'000 map threw me off a little and there was the flag!! So angry at myself. I finished the rest as I should have but sprinkled it with another small route choice mistake. Oh well, it was a good training.

Mountain Biking 7:16 [3] 1.81 km (4:01 / km)

Riding back to the cars.

Mountain Biking 11:26 [2] 2.44 km (4:41 / km) +50m 4:15 / km

Riding from parking to the event center which was kind of hard to find.

Bike O race 27:16 [5] 4.95 km (5:30 / km) +62m 5:11 / km

Sprint Bike-O race near Epinal. Bulletin 3 claimed that it was 0.7 km to the start from the event center when in fact it was 2.2 km with 80 m climb, so I got there late and started through about 55 sec after my start all out of breath with adrelanine through the roof. I first had to calm back down, breath deeply and slowly pedal so oxygen would flow back into my legs. After control 1 I felt better and in control again. Did the course in a calm, but still fast, way, looking at the route choices and avoiding mistakes, stopping where I couldn't quite make out which way I needed to take and so on. It proved just the right thing to do and I came in second only 20 sec behind first which I would easily have been able to do if I were on time at the start.
Apparently, I was not the only one being late, lots of bikers miscalculated their way to the start and were late as it was 3 x further and 80 m more climb than advertised!!

Uphill training for this weekend's MTBO races in France. I'm just not motivated these last weeks (months)? to train and/or to push it a little in my trainings. So, I will have to wing it and do my best in the races (which I am motivated for). This year, I don't seem to be getting into a particular good shape, just so-la-la.

Running 51:47 [3] 5.14 km (10:05 / km) +111m 9:06 / km

Trying to run but it was more a "jog". My legs are still recovering, that is my right knee took quite a beating last week with all the steep downhills cross-country, through the woods, mud and creek beds. Lots of stabilising and sometimes I felt like running on the tibia for painful moments. So, I have to give it more time. Ah yes, the both big toenails that I somehow broke near the base (?) were also hurting a lot all week. A rest will be good for everything.

Running 5:47 [2] 0.44 km (13:07 / km) +56m 8:02 / km

Warm-up to the start.

Orienteering race 57:01 [5] 3.77 km (15:08 / km) +149m 12:38 / km

Day 4 SOW. A better day, though still very steep and going around the slope to the final basin before going up steeply to the finish.
The first control was in an area which I thought was quite dangerous with tons of blocks of rocks with deep gaps in-between and it was so complicated, it was hard to make out what was what and where. Lots of orienteers scrambling around, I'm amazed if nobody seriously got hurt in that area. No idea why they send the very young (kids, and the older orienteers in there!). The rest was fine, still very steep on meadows.

Came in 14th out of 44.

Hiking 19:07 [3] 0.81 km (23:38 / km) +125m 13:19 / km

Early (!) hike up to the EC. Then, a coffee! No breakfast.

Orienteering race 1:13:43 [4] 4.05 km (18:12 / km) +204m 14:32 / km

Not my day, not my terrain, not my idea of orienteering fun.
I have no idea why in the world, they would even produce a map in an area like that. The map actually did not show everything that was actually in the woods. The creeks were actually really steep gullies. I mentally gave up after I couldn't find #4 which looked easy and straightforward on the map but probably wasn't awake enough to notice certain things. But I was initially always in the "neighborhood", just missed the flag which was quite hidden in big leafy shrubs. At one point, I was close to the finish and considered whether I should just give up as this would become my throw-out day anyway. However, my head would not hear of it and I did the 100m-descent to later climb it all and more back up.
Should have stuck to my resolution to never orienteer in that kind of mountainous terrain again.

Running 17:12 [3] 1.65 km (10:27 / km) +102m 7:58 / km

Warm-up to the start, had to hurry and it climbed quite a bit.
Even though I was early at the event center and the finish area, I spent quite a bit of time talking such as with Monika B returning from the 6day of MTBO in Denmark and then seeing Walter Siegenthaler and chatting the most obvious things first before I really had to rush to my start.

Still had a 2 km, 130 m climb up to the event center walking.

Orienteering race 54:31 [5] 4.41 km (12:22 / km) +194m 10:08 / km

Day 2: SOW long course and quite high up. Had incecurities the first 4 controls bc of steepness of the area, then a murderous climb almost back up to the start and 2 quite simple legs along the altitude on a trail that was so irrregular and deeply rutted from the cows, I could not really run or jog normally. Made a mistake to #8 and had to turn around (it lay on the ground hidden) and another very steep hillside jog around the lake into the finish. Was proud of my time under 1 hour but it turns out to be slow, only about in the middle of the field of W65. Disappointed kind of.

Warm-up to the start.

Orienteering race 13:00 [5] 1.67 km (7:47 / km) +27m 7:12 / km

Sprint in Gstaad, did better than anticipated. There is such a strong field of Swiss women I normally can never beat, and the the women from other countries, I have no idea how they usually do. I came in 7th out of a field of 44 in my age class. Happy with it. Glorious day in the mountains.
3 PM

Mountain Biking 38:30 [3] 5.14 km (7:30 / km) +244m 6:03 / km

Riding home from Gstaad but wanting to find that "Mirage Gstaad", elevation 1049 by Doug Aitken. We biked up on a little road, then took the hiking trail down (it was forbidden to ride the bike :-/) and found that hous of mirrors. It was magic and we enjoyed it much. From there riding through a ravine and pushing the bike down, then up to the main road and home. Fun day.
