Mountain Biking 30:20 [3] 4.63 km (6:33 / km) +250m 5:09 / km

Missed the bus *or so I thought", but it was late and passed me, so I kept on pedaling hard uphill to catch the train in Chambrelien which I didn't. So Urs helped me out and brought me to Les-Hauts-Genevays. Hard work-out, I really pushed it in the heat and it was probably my best time.
6 PM

Mountain Biking 54:39 [2] 14.65 km (3:44 / km) +162m 3:32 / km

Riding back down after my meeting, went across Serroue on some small trails, up and down. Had no map with me unfortunately, so didn't quite know at times where I was.
7 PM

Mountain Biking 8:25 [1] 2.65 km (3:11 / km)

Mt.biking home after picking tomatoes at Sandra's place (no time for watering the lawn, too late).

Mountain Biking 1:19:29 [3] 14.58 km (5:27 / km) +436m 4:44 / km

A very hot day and kept working inside to get all things to the Goodwill and the garbage place. AND I was just not motivated to go and exert myself. Finally, by 6 pm ran out of excuses and started slowly on the bike and pretty quickly forgot my lethargy. Took a new route exploring a new way to go uphill with actually the goal to reach the ruins of a castle of Rochefort. (I finally knew where it was on a map.) But did not make it and turned above Chambrelien, went towards Rochefort to turn back down to Sandra's house to water the lawn and veggies (pick some super ripe tomatoes, mmh) and biked back home. Felt good in the end.

Hiking 2:12:06 [2] 7.55 km (17:29 / km) +338m 14:18 / km

These days I have trouble with motivation for training. It is nicely hot here, but in the French part of the Jura not as dry as in the rest of Switzerland. So, we decided today to escape the heat and go to the "Siberia of Switzerland" in La Brévine and do a fairly easy trail along the border to France on the crest where a little rocky trail follows the boundary stones which were dated from 1819!! It was just the right thing to do for me as I was quite tired from all the clearing out and re-arranging things in our apartment. This has been in-waiting for the last 3 years, since we moved and I has been a work-in-progress. However, now, I also could part of many things and a huge load went to the good-will or wherever they would take it. The result feels good with a simpler house-hold but I am far from done. I need the momentum going from parting with things before I regret.

Mountain Biking 2:21:41 [2] 31.8 km (4:27 / km) +440m 4:10 / km

Biked first to Sandra's house to get instructions for lawn-watering while they're away. Then back over to Bôle to meet Urs. We did a tour together to check out the details of the course I'd like to do next Saturday with Urs's fitness group. (forgot to re-start my Garmin at one point)

Running 37:01 [3] 3.9 km (9:30 / km) +150m 7:58 / km

Quick evening run up to Sandra's place as we all went out for pizza afterwards before they all were going to go on vacation for 2 weeks.

Hiking 1:48:22 [2] 7.5 km (14:27 / km) +286m 12:08 / km

A beautiful day started in the morning, hot and humid with possible thunderstorms in the afternoon, so Urs and I decided to hike the whole of the gorge of the Areuse close to our house as Urs had never done it and I have only traversed in on the bike on a little road but actually never done the whole thing on foot.
The beginning which was familiar to me is always pretty breathtaking and beautiful. The trail meanders along the creek, sometimes on one side, then on the other. The trail is always pretty well secured as there used to be quite many deadly accidents in that gorge until about 10 years ago. It was so exciting that we soon reached the "les champs de moulin" where we had a quick coffee. The dark grey clouds all of a sudden looming up-valley (Val de-Travers) caused us to quickly set-out again on the right side of the Areuse on alittle paved road. After about 1 km, the first drops fell and we barely managed to reach one of the little power plant houses along the way to stand under a small roof. We eventually were stuck over half an hour, ate our sandwiches and changed the side of the house as the wind of the thunderstorm had shifted. It was a pretty impressive downpour for a while.
(and my Garmin changed from "pause" to "end and save" on its own, grrr. Also, it didn't start when I had pushed it about 1 km further down close to the bridge where we actually started.
1 PM

Hiking 55:41 [2] 3.96 km (14:03 / km) +325m 9:58 / km

We decided to continue up-river despite the fact that the clouds still were pretty dark-grey and were threatening to rain. We soon came to the absolute highlight of the gorges of the Areuse, the Falls under Brot, which were really worth it. We took lots of pictures before continuing in a light drizzle up to the top of the falls through a very narrow gorge to the next and final level.
From there it was a pretty even hike into Noiraigue where we just had missed the train out by 5 min or less. So we had another tea and sweets before the next train to Bôle.
3 PM

Running 22:45 [0] 2.28 km (9:59 / km) +24m 9:29 / km

From the train station of Bôle, Urs took my bag and walked back down home while I jogged over and down to Boudry and the Areuse to get our car under a light drizzle.

Mountain Biking 1:17:44 [3] 13.03 km (5:58 / km) +361m 5:14 / km

I met up with Sandra for a mtb-ride up near her place: she talked while I breathed hard to barely keep up with her (I had to ride uphill all the way to where she lives and together it still was mostly uphill). Then she had to go home, and I set out into another woods to do some bike-orienteering on a few small trails connecting some orienteering controls from a meet I did over 4 years ago. It was fun. Then I headed back to Sandra's place for dinner with them. :-)
8 PM

Mountain Biking 9:45 [2] 2.79 km (3:30 / km) +1m 3:29 / km

Riding all the way down home from Sandra's place through the vineyards.

Running 59:23 [2] 6.22 km (9:32 / km) +92m 8:53 / km

Running home after dropping of Matti and Lena after a day of baby-sitting; as always, I was very tired and lethargic and made it home under an hour but not with great energy.

Mountain Biking 2:01:37 [3] 31.3 km (3:53 / km) +626m 3:32 / km

Took the train into the Val de-Travers for a visit and coffee, then went to look at a beautiful waterfall in Môtiers before I headed back home all along the Areuse and eventually through the famous gorges on a small road.
I was still having problems with my front tire, the handle-bar and the brakes since putting the bike back together after the races and travels back from Hungary. I stopped several times, adjusted the squeaky brakes and the tire until all of a sudden it seemed to fall into its proper position again. Whew.
Long, but beautiful ride.

Running 58:01 [3] 6.89 km (8:25 / km) +70m 8:01 / km

First "real" training run in 10 days (I must really have been tired, un-motivated or sick?); did the Planeyse-Areuse loop and felt quite good. Still not that fast but it could have been worse. Gorgeous day and the lake had again this incredible color.

Mountain Biking 29:53 [2] 6.67 km (4:29 / km) +152m 4:01 / km

Easy ride up to Sandra's house (not on my regular bike bc I eventually had to fix both tires still from when I was riding in Hungary); weeded way too long and talked with M+K before it got really late and I had to hurry home.

Hiking 2:37:19 [1] 9.31 km (16:54 / km) +393m 13:57 / km

Hiking with the group at a leisurely pace, talking to people, checking out flowers, birds and butterfly. Time just flew by when we were walking. But we stopped at the restaurant and it took forever to get people moving again up to the lake where I finally had my sandwich.
I had no GPS from the lake about 2 km and 200 m elevation down to the mountain station of the gondola steeply down to the main valley

Running 1:22:45 [3] 4.77 km (17:21 / km) +721m 9:53 / km

After a pretty roller-coaster week with good days but also very tired off-days and no training at all nor any minute on the bike, I felt little better (finally!) on Saturday. We had gone to Glarus all the way back to the end of the valley and met Urs's fitness group from Bern for the weekend. We had an over 2-hour tour of a newish power station and huge electrical generating station deep in the mountain and high up in the working area. I often felt as if in a James Bond-movie with all these subterranean installation where the "man" lives who wants the power over the whole world. But this was far from that and the huge tunnels connecting, the immense power generators, the makings of the dams high up, the logistics of building all of this with heavy material transported to remote areas with no road nor trails, it must have been a mind-boggling project.
Anyway, when we finally popped out again into warm sunshine and everybody was getting ready to take another cog train up to Braunwald to have some pre-dinner snacks and wine, I decided I needed to move a bit.
I chose to hike up VERY steeply on a trail and once I was above the village I still had to cross a huge area of small streams merging into one before falling into a beautiful waterfall over one of those high cliffs.
It was a very nice time by myself, doing some exercise, being in the woods, admiring flowers high up and eventually ending up at the hotel just in time for dinner.

Unspecified 3:00:00 [0]

Note: in the afternoon I finally started to clean my bike thoroughly, check that everything was working and also started to put things back together: pedals, handlebars, wheels, chain, derailleur etc.
I pumped it up and when I rechecked 15 min later, the flat tire was flat! I thought that I did something wrong so pumped it up again and felt and listened while I slowly turned the tire. Sure enough I heard a faint hiss and pulled out a huge, long, woody thorn!! I must have been so lucky on Sunday at the relay that I managed to finish.

Bike O race 52:51 [5] 11.55 km (4:35 / km) +121m 4:21 / km

Relay, 2nd leg with Monika Bonafini first and Marco Bonafini on the last leg.
This was a fun and worthy end to great 5 days of Bike O-ing around Budapest.
I came home with 3 silver and one gold medal and was really happy with it.
Lots of people had broken chains, flat tires, gears that were stuck and other things, and I managed to pull through with no major damage and an intact bike. Lots of washing and cleaning though with all the mud and water there was. And, I had no real day (except maybe a little the long distance) where I messed up.
