Went to Rigi Kaltbad for Urs's birthday present to enjoy the scenery and the beautiful thermal baths built in 2012 by the world famous Swiss architect Mario Botta. It was a truly stunning design, very clear lines and alcoves built with beautiful granite rocks. I could not stop looking at the building which had a mesmerizing geometry. The stairs as well were not linear but slighlty oblique. (www.rigikaltbad.ch)
It was well worth the visit and the two times I enjoyed the thermal waters.

I also went for an exploratory run up into the clouds which moved in and out and occasionally I could see an incredible view onto the Alps and towards West.

On Monday, the sun was out and it was SO warm at over 20 degrees with a slight Chinook breeze which is always the precursor of a storm coming. But the views all around was stunning and the fall colors so beautiful bathed in that sunshine.

Orienteering race 22:26 [5] 3.24 km (6:56 / km) +52m 6:25 / km

Decided to go to a regional sprint O-race (almost 500 participants!) in Herzogenbuchsee.
Felt I did quite well, never really found a flow as it was constantly interrupted by turning corners and looking very hard that I would not miss a passageway which I did not.
Unfortunately, almost at the end, I punched a wrong number, but it looked so right. On that maintenance building there were two almost identical parallel passages, and I first did not see the one closer to the fence until I was alarmed that there must be somewhere near close a control with my number on it. Lost 1:20 on that one and probably winning it as up to that point the two of us were always alternating who was ahead with my leading most of the time. Oh well, 2nd wasn't too bad.

Running 47:02 [3] 5.67 km (8:17 / km) +183m 7:08 / km

A quick run after having taken care of Matti on Thursday after lunch and all day Friday. Sandra is in Portugal as a coach at the EYOC in charge of the Swiss Youth team (M/F16+18). They did very well at the sprint, winning two golds plus various medals and diplomas.

Ran from the apt to the nearby woods trying out another loop. Felt quite good, still sore quads from the Tuesday training.

Did also a lot of Matti strollering, at least an hour on Thursday and more on Friday walking to Peseux for some groceries.

Running 59:45 [3] 5.83 km (10:15 / km) +431m 7:29 / km

For the first time in at least a year, I did the Gurten hillclimb and loop again. Quite happy with my time as I remember it was usually hard to be under an hour. Did not push, just was an exploratory run to see how it would feel again.
It was SO warm, the chinook (south wind) is blowing, the Alps are close to the touch which is always a sign that rain will soon follow.
A beautiful run.

Running 42:11 [3] 5.26 km (8:01 / km) +163m 6:56 / km

Easy run just to get out a bit. Caught a break between rains. My legs felt still Kind of heavy after yesterday's bike-O race.

Bike O race 1:12:48 [5] 18.06 km (4:02 / km) +287m 3:44 / km

Final of the Bike-O races this year. Had a "slowish" start (maybe because of the 2 1/2 hour drive with traffic jam) then sped up and had few 1st-place legs and lots of 2nd places. Came in 2nd for today (7 women in that class!) and won the yearly ranking :-).
It was obvious again, wherever there were those flat longish stretches along a forest road, I placed in the middle, as soon as there were controls on single tracks with some O-technique involved, I had the fastest times. I need to gain more speed on those flat sections. I really tried hard today and always chose the highest gear to gain more ground with each wheel turn. Challenging and fun.

Mountain Biking 1:29:37 [3] 29.83 km (3:00 / km) +226m 2:54 / km

Needed to do a bikeride before Saturdays Final Swiss Cup race. Went to do the same "old" loop from home which I still enjoy because it is so varied. (Unfortunately, lots of it is still on paved grounds, but that can't be helped.) Beautiful fall day (finally, after lots of rain and foggy days). I think I was fast which is encouraging for Saturday. 7 (SEVEN) women have signed up in my class, wow!!

Matti strollering 20:00 [1]

Went over to Sandra's to look after Matti while she went on 2 appointments. Marc was also home as he has now the stomach flu, and it hit him pretty hard yesterday.
Went walking with Matti in the afternoon, beautiful ambience after and before the next rain. One could see the Alps very sharply in a beautiful light.

Running 57:38 [0] 7.86 km (7:20 / km)

My longish run from home, again under 1 hour, yipee! Felt good, especially after the lymph drainage which seems to help quite a bit for my muscles and fascia.

Running 14:13 [2] 1.06 km (13:24 / km) +129m 8:20 / km

Warm-up up to the start. In fog and snow all around!
I had thought and hoped we would be over the fog at this altitude and enjoy warm sunshine. But nooooo, we were usually in the middle of the grey clouds.

Orienteering race 52:34 [5] 5.31 km (9:54 / km) +118m 8:55 / km

Regional O race above Biel in the Jura. Usually this is a beautiful area but we could not see much of it. Occasionally, a ray of sunlight but most often the fog was clouding all the views. Sometimes, it was hard to make out the trees. Ahh, and about 20 cm of snow on the ground which made for hard running! A good strength training with lifting your legs ;-).
Made no mistakes (just had to follow the trails in the snow) to the controls. Very similar course to the one long champs in Oct. 2011.
Came in first :-)!

Running 40:53 [3] 2.4 km (17:00 / km) +167m 12:37 / km

On our only good and sunny day, we went way far back into a narrow but beautiful valley high up almost on the Italian border. I had enough orienteering on a steep slope and went "running" along a trail which I lost, and then found my way along the slope on some intermittent deer trails until I hit the one big trail I took down to the team again.
Not much of a run, I had wanted a better training, but that was all the time I had.

Orienteering 1:20:00 [2] 5.0 km (16:00 / km) +250m 12:48 / km

I was supposed to collect controls on a very steep (typical) Ticino slope, but I could not find the smallish (training) flags. Searched up and down, back and forth. Giving up, I went to the next location and found the flag so I knew that my map reading was accurate, but could not find the following one again and thought I was going nuts. I searched all over the cliffs and boulders on the slope and gave up again. Further down I went for the last 3 flags when Sandra searched for me and told me that Marc had already picked up one. But she went back up and found the three I had not collected. So discouraging for me.

Running 26:42 [2] 1.95 km (13:43 / km) +205m 8:59 / km

Run, climb up to the start in rain.

Orienteering race 51:06 [5] 4.75 km (10:46 / km) +73m 10:00 / km

Another Nat. meet in the rain. The course was kind of easy which means I am too slow for it. On the easiest control, a water hole, I made a 3-4 min error as there were many people/family gathered in that area searching. I actually knew where I was and instead of following my plan I let myself be distracted. Oh well. Not a very rewarding course, felt unmotivated by it, and I am just not fast enough thrashing through the woods or following roads for 500 m at a time.

Later, I rode with Sandra and Matti down south to the Ticino for her week-long training camp with the juniors from her club. The training camp was co-shared with the Basel juniors.

Orienteering race 31:36 [5] 2.82 km (11:12 / km) +116m 9:17 / km

Another Nat.meet (middle distance) with the World Cup Final following so we could all watch.
Had a good race, it was very wet and muddy. But it did not rain anymore. Made no big mistake just a few bubbles here or there as I am just not fast enough through the woods. I opted to go out on the trails as much as possible. Happy with it, again I placed in top 10 which is quite hard to do in that class, and I left some women who regularly place top 3 behind me. :-).

Running 9:47 [3] 1.0 km (9:45 / km) +48m 7:52 / km

Warming up on the way to the start. Also needed to do a lot of stretching as I had not slept well at all.

Running 42:49 [3] 5.43 km (7:53 / km) +163m 6:51 / km

Quick run from Sandra and Marc's place before the babysitting Matti began. Nice run, I think I was quite a bit faster than sometime back in May?

Running 59:46 [3] 7.75 km (7:43 / km) +241m 6:41 / km

A day at home with no committments except cleaning up and lots of other things that have been patiently waiting.
Going for my "longer" run and pleased to see that the flatter km time was finally in the 6min range. Slowly but surely I finally see some improvements. :-)

Crosstrainer 30:00 [2]

Spent most of the day in Neuchâtel at Sandra's. In the evening at the O-training I was Matti-strollering through the woods where Sandra was running. Unfortunately, Matti did not like this anymore after awhile and was screaming in very loud protest! Many ANCO-runners heard him in the woods ;-). I tried whatever came to mind: giving him the bottle but he spit all of it out in a huge arch, lowering him so he could fall asleep, which made it worse, talking, running faster what Marc always does etc. He cried in intervalls which Sandra seemed to have heard. When I hurried back through the darkening woods, she met me and we finally relented to take him out. I carried him back so he could look forward and be "entertained" but happily I was soon back and the crying stopped at once! He enjoyed the crowd, watching people and just being where the action was! Oh boy.

At home, I did 30 min+ on the crosstrainer. This still is hard on my quads and I felt it the next day. But slowly I will gain that kind of strength. As always, sweat was dripping on the floormat.
