Running 1:13:37 [3] 6.63 km (11:06 / km) +130m 10:06 / km

In Colorado National Park: do a run before having to drive back to Colorado Springs, a 6-hr drive.
Beautiful weather and scenery, quite hot. Did that loop before, 2 and 3 years ago and it's always nice. Lots of stops to take pix.

Hiking 40:09 [0] 1.82 km (22:07 / km) +2m 22:00 / km

Before driving on to Colorado, we decided to try a hike/run on the practice loop of the Slickrock Trail. First, I went with Urs and hiked part of it until the Echo Point (which had a beautiful echo). It was fun on those slickrock hills.

Running 59:46 [3] 5.01 km (11:56 / km) +95m 10:54 / km

After splitting with Urs as he wanted to hike to the Abyss overlook, I was running another loop and we met up again at the intersection as if we had planned it exactly on the spot.
I took the running easy as even mid-morning, the temperature was over 35 degrees with a low humidity of 8 %, so thirst is an issue. I had a small bottle with me and it was just fine for this short amount of time.
Again very beautiful scenery.

Hiking 2:06:17 [1] 5.87 km (21:31 / km) +119m 19:32 / km

Easy hike early in the morning with about 25 degrees warmth instead of the 35-40 degrees even at 1700 m altitude.
Always so nice high up on porcupine rim looking down into the castle valley and the "nun and priest" rock formations. Lots of photo stops included.
Tired at end, slow walking tires me more than jogging which I would have wished to do.
Gorgeous day, but way too hot and dangerous to go biking except at 6 am.
We camped high up on sandflat road at 1700 m and it actually got a little cool at night and I used the sleeping bag for cover ;-)!!

Orienteering race 44:43 [4] 2.65 km (16:54 / km) +47m 15:31 / km

Middle distance US-Orienteering Champs: felt so much better than the last 2 days, more confident and wanted to orienteer well now that I know that I can orienteer well in that area. It is very intricate, very much swedish-type in moraine-like woods. Today, there was even more deadfall than yesterday and it was hard to keep a rhythm up and the compass bearing at the same time. Did also follow much the contours (hills, depressions, shoulders, etc on a very small scale).
Was happy with the 44 min and practically no mistake.
All on at least 2300 m with gorgeous weather and the beautiful sawthooth mountains as backdrop.

Hey, just saw that I was fastest woman on brown ahead of F55, F60! A little proud ;-)

Orienteering race 1:46:46 [4] 7.05 km (15:08 / km) +69m 14:26 / km

Long-O US Champs: very tough, went slow, Rogaine-style with a water pack on my back. More later. won gold and am happy, of course. Was scared shitless of that difficult area in the wilderness.
Had somehow a breakdown before the start, just could not imagine orienteering and felt absolutely exhausted and worthless for competition. Luckily, Leslie, ran into me and talked to me and gave me some courage back and a plan how to proceed and to bail out if I could not do it at all.
Went out w a pack with water and granola bars and started out slowly, rogaine-style which suited me just fine for today. It gave me confidence that I was "safe". Already to 1 I felt that I could actually read the map, it made sense and I could see what I wanted to see. And on the long leg to 2, I was definitely back to my old orienteering self. The controls kept on coming and I went over the course in a training-pace style. Glad I finished and felt good about it.
Had a mistake to 9 but recovered which ended about being a 5-min mistake.

Orienteering race 21:56 [5] 2.95 km (7:27 / km) +1m 7:26 / km

So mad at myself, my head was just off today, very tired. Took 7 before 6 and didn't even realize it. Could easily have gone to 7 again after I punched 6, but no alarms went off in my head which normally they would/should have.
Very disappointed as I thought the sprint was my chance to do well.
I was not sure about the races up in the sawtooth wilderness near Stanley, scared of the terrain, the difficulty, the remoteness, no confidence at all.

Running 7:35 [2] 0.94 km (8:07 / km) +19m 7:22 / km

Jog to start of sprint.
11 AM

Orienteering race 21:02 [5] 2.95 km (7:07 / km) +16m 6:56 / km

Did a sprint as it was the same place as the Bike-O registration and changing place (big school). It was somewhat unplanned and didn't have the right shoes. Felt not as springy as I wished ;-/).
Made a few blunders, such as did not see #9 on the map (they were so close together) and noticed on way to 10, that I was missing the control 9. Had to get back down from the church and around the walls to the control (lost about 1 min. Came in 4th out of 12, but could have come in between 2nd and 4th, but that's always easy to say. It was quite tricky in spots even though at home it does not look that way.

Mountain Biking 22:47 [3] 3.4 km (6:42 / km) +170m 5:22 / km

Long way and climb up to the start of the bike-O! Quite hot.
12 PM

Bike O race 1:35:52 [5] 17.36 km (5:31 / km) +382m 4:58 / km

Was not a very exciting Bike-O course and we had a few very, very steep (and dangerous) downhills on single trails! Had a good ride for about 2/3 of the way (appr. 50 min) and thought I'd finish the rest in 20 min. But NO, the hard part still came with another loop over the hill and then I made a capital mistake: on a short fast downhill, I knew when the trail ended, I had to make a left onto a small single track along the slope. I did it and when this single trail became way too dangerous in the steep slope, I got off and checked my map: I hadn't noticed that there were two single trails veering off to the left and I just saw the smaller one. I cursed and did a detour with lots of time loss, 10 min at least. The final km on the course was with lots of downhills and often I chose to walk as I just would not dream of riding it (once it even had small steps, and I had to put my bike sideways as it would have fallen off, I could not hold it).
Good beginning and stayed quite close to Monica (who's always riding in another sphere), but lost lots more towards the end, still 2nd out of 4.

Yoga 1:00:00 [1]

My last yoga class of this semester (as we're leaving for Colorado and Idaho next Monday). We practiced outside which was wonderful, but I also got bit by mosquitoes which made meditation at the end somewhat restless. ;-/))

Bike O race 1:02:44 [5] 11.3 km (5:33 / km) +272m 4:57 / km

Long Distance Bike-O Champs north of Belfort.
Today, we did the same course as D50 (and other classes) and it was quite tough. The beginning was very physical mostly on big forest roads with sections on wonderful single trails which actually were all slower route choices. It paid to head back and make a detour on the bigger roads than staying on the little trails. I overtook Käthy who had started again 2 min ahead of me half-way to number 1 (I don't really know why she was so slow, she usually beats me in Switzerland where the roads and trails are much easier to ride on). I saw Monika shortly after number 3, after she had taken a faster, but longer route and had passed me (she had started 2 min behind me). I really enjoyed this course, the physical part at the beginning until number 4 which was 2/3 into the whole course. Then, the area turned very intricate (it was a military area) and I had fun on the little trails and finding the controls which was tough technically.
I was happy with my time (Monika had 53 min, but that's normal, she rides in another sphere usually). A beautiful day and I prob. came in 2nd in my class.
1 PM

Mountain Biking 37:16 [2] 8.53 km (4:22 / km) +25m 4:18 / km

Fun ride with Urs into Belfort where we were 3 weeks ago, going up again to the famous lion overlooking the town, then having a wonderful crêpe and heading back around the big lake and to the car for our drive home.
Very hot, over 30 degrees and perfect weather.

Bike O 25:55 [5] 5.35 km (4:51 / km) +108m 4:24 / km

Middle Distance French Bike-O Champs just north of Montbéliard (we were there on our Euro6-bike ride just 3 weeks ago).
We (the 4 from our W55+ class riding in the Swiss Cup) had to do the E-course which was way too short and too simple. For me it was straight forward and I could push the whole way through. Some was on beautiful single trails or fairly overgrown trails and I could just zoom through everything.
The #2 flag was missing but as it was just short of a trail junction, I slowed and looked for the control then noticed confetti and the plastic markings of the course-setter and the stand with the punch and without much thinking I punched and went on. It looked as if 3 Swiss were searching for the flag but the other 24 in our class (H70, H14, and others) did punch, so the course was not thrown out and I could win it, yeah :-0). I really enjoyed it and felt like I had a good ride even though it was really short for a middle distance, it was more a sprint.

Mountain Biking 2:18:20 [3] 33.58 km (4:07 / km) +586m 3:47 / km

A bikeride home after having coffee and a planning meeting with Véro at Alexandra.
I took quite some detours and twice I went wrong so had to backtrack to get on the trail for home. Did not have much energy today.
Beautiful day but cold wind.

Orienteering race 49:42 [5] 4.38 km (11:22 / km) +157m 9:38 / km

Murtner OL just across the lake from us. The area was very green, so I looked for passages to go through, sometimes even finding trails.
Of course, I was pleased in the end I could win my age class again with a 6 min. lead. We were 11 in that class quite a bit more than in the other old women's classes ;-).
Had a good run, very even on the curve no major mistakes, maybe one of maybe 1 minute but had no impact on leading from control 1 on. :-).
Hope I get that kind of good runs at the US Champs, but it's a different country, surprises always seem to happen plus jet lag. We'll see.

Orienteering race 1:00:51 [5] 5.67 km (10:44 / km) +179m 9:16 / km

Ran leg 4 in the Pfingsten relay; I had a pretty good run and could find the flags quite well in the Jura area which does not have many landmarks and lots of semi-open. I liked the technical aspect, but just could not keep up physically, even though I ran well for my age, and I was about the 2nd oldest among all the men, women, young runners and people of all ages.
Some insecurities and one mistake of about 1 min.
The Pfingsten relay is a traditional 3-day weekend event with everyone camping somewhere in the Jura. The clubs come from all over Switzerland and mostly for the juniors it is a must to participate. There are 2 night-legs starting at 9 pm (this time in rain and fog meaning very tough) and the 3rd runner starts 6:30 am plus the combined time of the 2 night legs. There are 7 total legs.
I was camping with Matti and Lena (in the rain), but we had a dry and warm night a bit further away from all the clubs, cheering and talking around the fires. (Marc was the event director and Sandra busy with helping, so I looked after the kids at night. Our little adventure ;-).

Mountain Biking 2:47:27 [3] 36.0 km (4:39 / km) +868m 4:09 / km

Kicked myself out the house to do a long bike ride and wanted to catch the bus which goes up to Chambrelien and the train station, but I missed it by half a minute: saw it ahead of me for quite a while but never caught it while it was in town. So I rode up to Chambrelien and waited for the next train to La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Then rode back over three hill ridges and the last one cutting off towards La Tourne was the toughest one as I was on the right forest road uphill but missed the cut-off I wanted to take. So I went back down and found the small hiking trail. Pushed the bike up and eventually emerged from the woods (riding again) and felt happy as I hit exactly where I wanted to be.
The ride downhill on the road was steep and fun but I also got cold. Up to that point I had been riding hard to beat the threatening thunderclouds.
I then decided to make little detours through the woods to warm up a little. It was amazing how much warmer the air is as soon as I approached the town above Colombier and our place itself. So nice and balmy and no signs of thunder down here towards the lake anymore.
A good exploratory ride to 1) see whether I could actually do it, 2) whether I'd find a good option to cut across/over those hill tops: improvements could be found.

Note: GPS also noted my train ride, not the distance but the elevation gain; so I deducted 311 m which the train climbed from the total and got 868 m actual climb I did! Wow ;-)
