Bike O race 1:14:39 [5] 18.27 km (4:05 / km) +385m 3:42 / km

Long Distance Bike O Champs! Whew was it hard on me physically! I felt yesterday, and there was a lot of just powering uphill and at least 1/4 was on paved roads. More of a bike race than anything having to do with Mt.bike-O. Too bad, I am not that strong of a biker and lost 6 min to first and 3 min to 2nd. Some route choice problems which turned out to be pretty much equal. Other than that no real challenge except the physical part. The worst was from No 5 to 6 basically following a road uphill for almost 2 km. Mentally, this drained my enthusiasm for this race.
BUT, importantly, my fitness is not yet up to that level to push the way I should have needed to. At the end I was "dead" though, I gave it my all. Oh well.

Bike O 46:15 [5] 12.4 km (3:44 / km) +185m 3:28 / km

Did the Swiss Mt.bike O Champs Middle Distance in the Aargau. The woods were really boring, the course was very easy, no single track whatsoever, all big dirt roads. Usually, I am the slowest of the 4some group of women who compete all the time when the conditions are as fast as today, but I beat them anyway :-)!! A narrow margin though: 46.15; 47:20; 47:52; 49...
(I do much better when it's harder both O-technically and bike-riding single trails).
I was happy though!
Tomorrow the long distance!
BTW: it rained the whole time and I was, again, covered head to toe with mud and stuff.

Running 50:31 [2] 10.46 km (4:50 / km)

I knew it, I knew it and I blew it anyway! I knew it was going to start to rain but with cleaning up, emptying the car from the trip, laundry, grocery, etc, etc, it got to be afternoon and it rained. In fact, when I ran, it rained pretty hard, but I was tough ;-) and followed through with my plan.
Just an easy jog on my Elfenau loop as theres a bike-O tomorrow.
But my legs still hurt quite a bit, mostly on the outside, the fascia from hip to calves. It puzzles me, I have no explanation except doing the yoga stretches for a very long time and taking ibuprofen.

Thursday Sep 23, 2010 #

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Teaching good yoga class, feels so great to my aching leg muscles or fascia or whatever! But it lasts only about half a day then I should be able to stretch again??

Nordic Walking 1:30:00 [2] 7.2 km (12:30 / km) +206m 10:56 / km

thursday evening Nw class to Wachtfeuer.

Swimming 20:00 [1]

Last time swimming in the Mediterranean. It was quite tough to go in as the day was overcast, still mild and warm but little sun and the water was colder than the last week. However, the water was all calm, it felt like swimming in a lake except for the salty waters!
11 AM

Mountain Biking 2:03:30 [2] 20.23 km (6:06 / km)

Our last ride, this time south of San Vincenzo. As always, it is sometimes hard to follow the instruction and actually finding the paths that were described.
Tuscany, very unfortunately, has lots of landowners, counts and such as we were told, who have no interest whatsoever to let any people, bikers, hikers or walkers to go through their lands or use their dirt roads or trails, and we ended up quite often in front of a locked gate. Too bad, there is so much area that could be discovered far away from any lived-in estate but it is all off-limits.
However, I think that this soft tourism is slowly catching on and the towns are putting in efforts to open areas for hiking or biking. The eco-tourism is fast cash to the people who rent out their Tuscany mansions (and there are many all around) compared to the olive oil and wine "industry" which only gives profit after much work, that is, harvesting and processing.

Swimming 15:00 [2]

Went to the beach after bike riding and took a dip, but the water was choppy and it was hard to do some swimming as a wave would surely slop up my nose at just that moment :-(. So I did mostly sunbathing.
10 AM

Mountain Biking 2:00:12 [2] 16.87 km (7:08 / km) +250m 6:38 / km

This was definitely the most beautiful ride we've done here: from Bibbona going East through the Macchia and slowly uphill on a big dirt road up to the main ridge. Then following it in a roller coaster fashion until we took #13 to the right down again. Almost all was rideable and the view over the hills and plains and the Mediterranean to Corsica and Elby was fantastic.

Today, finally another beautiful blue skied day and the temps rose again to at least 25 degrees.

Note: the weather was rainy over the weekend, and we went to Volterra a beautiful town and castle on top of a hill and then on to Florence for some shopping (leatherstuff and wine). Dinner we had on the oval square of Lucca another worthy town to visit. In Florence, the temps were actually 29 degrees warm, but by the time we drove towards Pisa and Lucca some thunderrains passed through.

Sunday, we spent "at home" part of the time, went to a thermal bath near Venturina. Then, I went to the Torre of Donoratico where a trail was marked on my map to run a loop, but I found no trail and lost motivation to run.

Mountain Biking 2:22:01 [3] 15.48 km (9:10 / km) +220m 8:34 / km

Pretty tough mt.bike ride north of Piombino. At one point, we took the single track indicated on the map but we lost it in the woods and macchia, and it became very rutted and then turned the wrong way, too. We ended at the chasser's camp with high stands where we finally ate our sandwiches. The woods are so thick, they would not see any animal from far up high except the boars that might have passed underneath? That camp was very well equipped.
7 PM

Unspecified 9:59 [1] 0.4 km (24:43 / km)

Just walking around the house and down the alleyway lined with tall pine trees and oleander bushes to check where we are actually located near Donoratico!

Thursday Sep 16, 2010 #

Swimming 15:00 [1]

Swimming in the Mediterranean only once as the wind was pretty strong and the waves were uncharacteristically high for here, but the water was still warm. The weather seems to change :'(.
11 AM

Mountain Biking 2:17:47 [1] 27.44 km (5:01 / km)

Did a bike ride through wonderful pine forests along the various beaches. Often, we just went to look out how the beach was like, other times, we were somewhat lost which track would be the best to take. From Bibbona Marina North through Cecina Marina and beyon and back.
No flat tires today ;-), though we bought 2 extra spares to take along.

Swimming 30:00 [1]

The swimming, laying in the sun, relaxing already has become part of our routine as long as the weather holds. The Mediterranean is comfortably warm, about 24 degrees and beautful here with white sandy beaches as fas as one can see.
10 AM

Mountain Biking 2:26:28 [2] 15.23 km (9:37 / km) +250m 8:53 / km

Went on a loop in a forest near Sasseta. The woods had routes marked with numbers and it was really quite nice being able to follow something you knew would work out in the end. Too often the description or the maps we had ended up in dead-ends or were closed off with a gate as this area has so many landowners which are descendents from counts or whatever with lots of land full of olive trees and vineyards.

The roads were quite rough with lots of big rocks and both the up or the downhills were challenging. The few singletracks were even more of a challenge with deep ruts in spots.

Towards the end, Urs had not just one but flat tires on the front as well the back tire!! We then followed the road. I rode ahead a bit, then left my bike and ran up 200 m to the car (the last 24 min of our time). Quite fun. Then I drove around and biked Urs and his bike up as well.

Swimming 40:00 [0]

Laying on the white sandy beach, going in the water twice and playing with the waves and swimming a bit. Ahh, vacation!! And dolce far niente!
10 AM

Mountain Biking 2:08:07 [1] 26.06 km (4:55 / km)

Went for a mt.bike ride to the famous pictoresque town of Bolgheri where a 4km long road lined with cypresses (?plur) on both sides leads up to the town. Beautiful. Our road leading to the cypress road was lined with century old oak trees and olive trees and vineyards everywhere.

Mountain Biking 1:10:00 [1] 15.8 km (4:26 / km)

After staying for one night in a hotel, we decided to look for something else and drove around a bit in the area of Donoratico, Castagneto-Carducci because the hills were close, the countryside is very scenic and the Mediterranean only a few km away.
We found our place, an apartment in an agriturismo "Greppo All'Olivo".
In the afternoon, biking down towards the beach to Marina Castagneto-Carducci and out to an incredible beach just off a beautiful pine forest. Checked it out and as lightning and very dark clouds were illuminated in the North, we went back, had a gelato before heading back. I got a flat tire and saved the back wheel almost home standing while riding, but had to walk the last half mile.

Running 1:05:00 [1] 6.0 km (10:50 / km)

Jungfrau Marathon: help support Marc in his quest as #1 seeded runner. Get him his special drink twice in Lauterbrunnen at different spots, then rushing up to the finish on the Kleine Scheidegg to see him finish as second place runner!! An incredible feat, wow :-).

After the media calmed down a bit around Marc, and he seemed to be able to take care of his own needs (massage and shower) with Sandra managing it all ;-), I told them good-bye and rushed down the hill to the last water station, watched the runners a bit then went further down to Wixi skistation to wait for my boss who was attempting to finish as a result of a bet (he was a heavy smoker and had never run before he started at the beginning of the year)! I saw him and went a half a mile with him but I had no desire to climb back up again.
I went to the next train station at Wengern alp and took the train down and went back to Bern to pack for my vacation in the Tuscany.

Running 56:59 [3] 5.71 km (9:59 / km) +300m 7:54 / km

Tried a new loop. Went up onto the Gurten, made a loop and came straight down.

Nordic Walking 1:10:00 [2] 5.4 km (12:58 / km) +120m 11:40 / km

It just started to rain after 5:30 pm, so almost nobody showed up but 2 people, grrr. Went with them on a shortish but fastish loop up the Harder. Still kind of fun and the rain stopped intermittently.

Yoga 1:00:00 [1]

Amazing, I went to work with strong backpain around the sacroiliac joint and started with the yoga class gently until all of a sudden I realised that my back ache was almost gone!! I was very amazed! Could teach a normal yoga lession afterwards as my back became more and more nimble, still unstable but much much less painful.

Wednesday Sep 8, 2010 #

5 PM

Running 46:13 [3] 6.37 km (7:15 / km)

Ran the Elfenauloop again, not as fast as on Saturday. My back has been hurting a lot and running did help a bit.

Tuesday Sep 7, 2010 #

Nordic Walking 1:15:00 [2] 6.0 km (12:30 / km) +250m 10:21 / km

NW in the evening up to Schibeflueh; the view was not as great as some other times because of clouds turning into fog.

I was also teaching 2 senior classes today.

Monday Sep 6, 2010 #

Nordic Walking 50:00 [1] 4.5 km (11:07 / km)

Senior NW from Matten to Lütschinen over old airfield.

I was also teaching a core conditioning class in the afternoon.

Hiking 2:56:33 [1] 8.81 km (20:03 / km) +400m 16:20 / km

Did an easy hike in the Bernese Jura up to the famous tower on Mt. Moron that Botta designed and 700 masonic apprentices built. Took the longer way down over beautiful Jura meadows, had to bushwhack a bit to find a dirt road, but without a good map it was quite hard. Found the car after all.
My map had a 1:100'000 scale, aerial from 26th June 1935 and redone 1967!! ;-) I might need a newer version!

Saturday Sep 4, 2010 #

6 PM

Running 45:35 [3] 5.28 km (8:38 / km)

Did the Elfenauloop in the evening. Beautiful light and scenery!
(Stopped my Garmin at one point instead of just hitting lap, so I estimated the remaining leg)

Thursday Sep 2, 2010 #

Nordic Walking 1:20:00 [1] 6.3 km (12:42 / km) +110m 11:41 / km

Thursday evening group and went around the Little Rugen and up towards the Big Rugen and had a beer on the Heimwehfluh before returning in the dark. Beautiful sunset again and comfortable temperature although fall is definitely in the air.

Teaching yoga class in the morning.

My knee worries me, the same that had arthroscopic meniscus surgery a year ago: yesterday, while running in the Bremer, all of a sudden I felt my knee swell up and hurt the same as if I'd hurt a meniscus again. The pain and swelling persisted all day and was actually quite intense when I pressed on a certain point.
I was so disappointed, I had hoped that now when finally I could start running and have some kind of conditioning, it will be all starting from scratch again?

Wednesday Sep 1, 2010 #

5 PM

Running 55:32 [3] 5.02 mi (11:04 / mi)

A gorgeous day where you could see the Alps in all their newly snowed-in glory from Bern close to the touch! Amazing.
Went to the Bremer for my regular loop.
Backache is back :-(.
