Yoga 50:00 [2]

regular Yoga class

Nordic Walking 1:00:00 [2] 6.5 km (9:14 / km) +80m 8:42 / km

Last evening NW as we switch to an earlier time next month. Went to ruins Goldswil in nice evening colors. Dark at the end.
My knee and lower leg does not hurt that much even though yesterday was rough on it. Oh well.

Hiking 30:00 [2] 8.5 km (3:32 / km) +800m 2:24 / km

As the day was promised to be beautiful in the mountains, Urs decided to take the day off. We drove to Interlaken, took the cog up to the top of the Harder and started hiking along the ridge. Got to the meadows and nice views of all of the high mountains (Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau and others), continued along the ridge high above the Lake of Brienz up to the first high point (Suggiturre) and on to the Augstmatthorn (4 hour hike). The usual ibex along this high ridge were missing :-(. Managed ok with my knee but had it taped and took my poles. Went down straight to the Lombachalp which was quite hard on my knee but we made it in an hour. Saw the herd of ibex along the way, they were grazing at a lower elevation. Hitchhiked down to Habkern and were too lazy to wait for the bus, so hitchhiked again back to our car with a friendly Indian couple!!
Afterwards, my knee hurt less than usual. strange though? But the capsule is swollen, so there was some impact.

Nordic Walking 1:00:00 [2] 4.3 km (13:57 / km) +180m 11:32 / km

Regular Tuesday with teaching 2 senior classes and NW in the evening. Went up to the Schibeflueh and back. Limping along mostly on the downhills.
Also had an appointment with my surgeon and will have arthroscopic surgery on my right knee this coming Monday. Yipee, what a relief that I
finally took the time. But my knee hurts too much and I can't run anymore without limping.

Strength 1:00:00 [1] 4.0 km (15:00 / km) +120m 13:03 / km

Teaching my regular core strength class. People were back from their vacations and had 7 people, fun! Did core and scapular isolation strength with bands.
Later, NW with seniors, the loop on the Harder around the animal park. Knee hurt quite a bit.

Roadbiking 1:48:00 [2] 30.0 km (3:36 / km)

A total "off" day and no MTB-O meet :-(.
Urs suggested an easy bike ride, so we drove to St.Auban on the lake of Neuchatel, left the car there and started riding around the lake. In spots we were in a Nature Preserve, and i wished I had brought my mountain bike. But it was manageable with the road bike. Rode onto the other side to the port of Neuchatel. Took the boat back across the lake to the car.
This was really a good trip and a relaxing afternoon.

Running 50:49 [3] 7.5 km (6:47 / km) +70m 6:28 / km

Felt much better today as if I was able to kick that cold. Went for a run in the rain, but after awhile the knee and lower leg hurt so much, I had to walk several times. Rats! In the end, my whole body hurt and felt out of alignment, very painful.
Did the Elfenau-zig-zag loop and saw the young lynx cub again :-).

Friday Sep 18, 2009 #

Unspecified 1 [0]

Felt a cold coming on, was dragging all day; went to see the osteopath again, things have improved already this week. Could not make myself to go for a run :-(.

Thursday Sep 17, 2009 #

Yoga 45:00 [1]

My regular morning yoga class

Nordic Walking 1:00:00 [2] 5.5 km (10:55 / km) +80m 10:10 / km

Thursday evening NW class, went to the ruins Unspunnen and back through the Heimwehfluh.

Wednesday Sep 16, 2009 #

Running 48:50 [3] 7.4 km (6:36 / km)

Went to do the Bremgarten loop. First, I was not much slower than usual, but after 5 km, the knee started to hurt a lot more and I instinctively started to slow down a lot.
(my surgeon will be back next Monday, and I will have to schedule the surgery now, it has become unbearable and does not let me sleep.)
On Monday, i went to see an osteopath and she adjusted my bones, muscles, all over. We'll see where it will lead and how much the tight muscles will be able to let go and stay that way.

Nordic Walking 1:00:00 [2] 5.5 km (10:55 / km)

Decided not to go running, too lazy and my right knee hurt too much. Did the NW in the eve (after teaching 2 senior fitness classes) and went to Lombach again but for a longer loop.

Monday Sep 14, 2009 #

Teaching classes 1:30:00 [2] 4.5 km (20:00 / km)

Teaching core strengthening class with some squats. Later NW class to Lombach with the senior class.

Orienteering race 1:16:06 [4] 5.8 km (13:07 / km) +135m 11:45 / km

Long O-Swiss Champs: decided to go and just to take it easy without ambitions. Did some 10 min of stretching before starting to loosen up my hamstring and back. Did the course without any major problems, no mistakes and spiked almost all of them. Once, I might have done a route choice error. The woods were beautiful in parts and soft where I could actually run. Other parts were full of deadwood or blackberry bushes, and I could not run through it. I'm so scared of tripping and tearing my hamstring again. Many times I chose routes on roads or trails which were farther but at least I could move faster.
I was very happy with my run and time and came in 15th of 38 women.

Orienteering race 18:06 [5] 1.7 km (10:39 / km) +35m 9:39 / km

Sprint Swiss O-Champs in Willisau: Made a mistake right at #1 :-(, did not see "my" stairs in the little playground (there were two!) and kept on searching for a minute before returning. Rats! The rest was easy and mostly "just running. With that mistake I came in 20th out of 32. But all were very close as it was that easy.

Lots of backpain afterwards as well as hamstring and right meniscus pain. Whew, I'm a mess. Sincerely consider not to run tomorrow, I'm depressed about my not being able not to run better.

Yoga 45:00 [1]

Easy yoga class, but felt good to stretch my muscles.

Nordic Walking 1:10:00 [2] 6.5 km (10:46 / km)

NW class down the Aare to the ruins of Wyssenau.

Wednesday Sep 9, 2009 #

Mountain Biking 2:11:53 [3] 46.0 mi (2:52 / mi) +250m 2:49 / mi

Ride around the Lake of Brienz. Up on the paved side over Brienz. Had 54.33 until the bridge over the Aare. Then steep climb up to Giessbach Falls and over gravel trails back.
My hind brake was starting to leak and completely lost its (hydraulic) power, so I had to be a little careful coming down the 2 steep hills on the way back ;-).

Tuesday Sep 8, 2009 #

Running 45:57 [3] 7.0 km (6:34 / km) +120m 6:03 / km

Went for the Gnome-sheep trail loop over lunch even though I felt very tired. Just did it as an easy jog, and the time showed it, too!

Yesterday and today, I was exceedingly exhausted and without motivation for anything. Aftereffects from the weekend in the Ticino, lots of driving and the 2 mtb races?

Nordic Walking 1:10:00 [3] 5.5 km (12:44 / km) +300m 10:00 / km

NW up to Ruedi's hut over the steep trail and down on the road as it is now getting dark early.

Monday Sep 7, 2009 #

Teaching classes 1:00:00 [2]

My "normal" Monday core class with free weights and later on the NW with seniors up to Heimwehfluh and celebrating one member's bd with ice cream and a terrific view from up there!

Sunday Sep 6, 2009 #

Mountain Biking race 1:50:25 [4] 17.5 km (6:19 / km) +280m 5:51 / km

Mtb-O Swiss Champs Long distance: I was quite scared of this one because of the long distance and the toughness we experienced yesterday. So, I started at an even pace and it seemed that I was riding very evenly and could win by a 1.20 min margin!
It was hard again, but now, I was prepared and I made appropriate choices. However, later I noticed that I must have chosen bad routes at least twice, and I made a big mistake when I missed a turnoff.
But again, lots of fun!

Saturday Sep 5, 2009 #

Mountain Biking race 50:30 [4] 8.3 km (6:05 / km) +145m 5:36 / km

Went to the Ticino, in fact to the nearby Italian part and participated in the Swiss Mtb O-Champs, today the middle distance. It was thoroughly tough and nothing like I ever did! (the few mtb-O-meets I did so far were tame and easy in comparison)
We were on lots of single trails, sometimes I had to carry my bike through the bush when some roots or branches were un-yielding in "my" single track. Once, I carried my bike up stairs towards a church! The orienteering was also tough and technically quite hard for a mtb o-race! The trails were rocky beyond belief, there was just no resting nor reading the map while riding. But I loved it, just my kind of mtb o-meet. Lost first place by mere 19 secs! I could have saved that in many places and I must have chosen some bad route choices (but they were sometimes hard to predict just looking at the map, and it was a lucky choice).

Unspecified 1 [0]

Another off day at home, and I meant to get a run in. But between errands and finishing my taxes and more, it rained cats and dogs with a strong West wind each time I wanted to get out rof a nur. So, I ended up not running and I am still healing my blisters and black (hurtful) toe nails and back and hamstrings ;-).
Went to town for lunch with Christoph but got thoroughly soaked while riding my bike!

Thursday Sep 3, 2009 #

Yoga 45:00 [1]

Good low key yoga class, did lots of asanas for my back and flexibility of the spine.

Nordic Walking 1:00:00 [2] 6.5 km (9:14 / km) +120m 8:27 / km

Thursday evening NW group. For a change, no rain nor thunderstorm and a good group came together :-). Went to the Katzenpfad to Ringgenberg and through the woods straight back. Good pace today.
Real time was 1hr20min.

Wednesday Sep 2, 2009 #

Unspecified 1 [0]

It's funny that my days off from work tend to fill up with other stuff, and I can't even squeeze in a run!!
today I went to a museum (natural science right behind my place, as there are a row of museums right where I live in Bern!!) with a friend, then some chatting, then cleaning up, then dinner with Christoph! a really good day :-)

Running 44:32 [3] 7.3 km (6:06 / km) +130m 5:36 / km

Did the Gnome-Sheeptrail loop over lunch even though my muscles still ache and my toenails hurt a lot (they definitely will get black) and the blisters are still burning. But it was such a beautiful (last?) summer day, I just had to get out.
Coming back, I tweaked my right knee just ever so slightly and it immediately gave out. Hmm, I hobbled back and lost time, of course, but I think that I definitely did something finally with this meniscus, it has been coming for over a year now.
28.46 to the fence and 15.57 back.

Nordic Walking 1:10:00 [2] 6.5 km (10:46 / km) +120m 9:52 / km

Tuesday evening group just before the weather turned and the first thunderstorms. Went to Kl.Rugen and over to Heimwehfluh. Fast pace today. My knee is very tender and the toenails quite painful, especially on the downhills.
Note: it was dark now at 8.15 pm!! (and we forgot the headlamps!)
