Note
Meet on Surebridge.
Started the day by hanging the last of the controls, mostly for White and Yellow courses. Much of the rest working at the Start/Finish table. A little late leaving as there were a couple of late finishers. Pleasant day to begin with, but it turned windy and cold in the afternoon.
Had a couple of problems.
- The first control for Red/Blue was missing. At this point this is still a mystery. It appears I hung the flag somewhere, as it is not in the kit. Looking at the controls I hung before and after the missing one, it's hard for me to see how I could be far off. Easy route to it, easy route to the next and a fairly obvious feature. But a couple dozen people on Red and Blue were not able to find it. Maybe dragged away by a deer, or maybe not. Without knowing where the control actually is, I can't be sure it was my error.
- Then there was the MAP. I wanted to use a 1:10000 version, but the club had none, so I had to have some printed. Given that, I decided that I would like to simplify the map to improve readability. So, after some experimenting, I decided to drop the stony ground and form lines and requested such from our map print coordinator. It turns out, to my surprise, some folks thought this was a (very?) bad idea. I did get some ideas on how I could have done this differently. One, use a 1:7500 map. The other, use smaller symbol sizes for those features. If I should ever be motivated to do something like this in the future, I will at least provide both the original and modified versions.
