orienteering race (red level course) 1:40:41 [3] *** 4.5 mi (22:22 / mi) +200m 19:40 / mi

I had secured my season standing for the winter league so this was my fun run. I tried the toughest course and took it slower than per usual. I ended up learning a lot and having a ton of fun. This course challenged me mainly on route choice and technique for locating controls. I had a lot of proud moments where I felt really smart, so that's a plus. It went well and I landed amongst some good runners in the standings, so overall a successful experience.

Takeaways: I did take this course a little slower because it was fun, but believe me I was still going hard, and there were moments where I definitely could have made a decision faster. As one of my casual mentors told me, a mediocre route executed quickly can be better than taking the best route, particularly if seconds are wasted selecting said route. Another takeaway is to look closer at the map before reverting to the inconsistent-in-producing-results "wandering" technique (I did this and it saved many minutes). Sometimes simplifying the map will only bring you to the area and not the control.
