Orienteering 50:51 [3] * 6.75 km (7:32 / km)
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline ASR 4

Northern SeriesStreet-O - Coburg Lake.
Fire and flood tonight. As we drove in to Melbourne there was a wattle tree burning furiously beside the road; probably initiated by a discarded cigarette. Upon return we were in an electrical storm and associated rainfall.
First time I have run on this map. Darned hot. Having been told that the creek was crossable my first attempt resulted in significant time loss finding the least unattractive crossing point and negotiating the knee deep mire. Subsequently I detoured to avoid crossing it. Those with previous experience of the map knew where they could cross and saved themselves a lot of time. Parts of the map contained almost illegible detail and I managed to pass by and overshoot one control, adding a couple of hundred metres to my journey. I ran through a pretty mean bit of unmarked swamp too - it appears to receive all the storm water drainage from the old Kodak site. If my Adrenalines disintegrate in coming days I won't necessarily be able to blame the swamp as I had earlier waded through the Merri Creek and its sediments didn't smell too good.
After the run we saw a large tiger snake cross the track near the start. I wouldn't have entered the long grass along the creek if I'd seen that snake earlier.

Western Sunset SeriesStreet-O - Garden City.
There is a certain degree of sameness about the courses on this map. Always starting at the pointy end doesn't help.

MTBnotO 1:26:38 [3] 20.9 km (4:09 / km)

Skeleton Creek Bike Trail: Kim Reserve - Altona Meadows - Sanctuary Lakes - Boardwalk - Kim Reserve. Had noted that work appeared to have ceased on the Skeleton Creek bridge linking Sanctuary Lakes with Altona Meadows and the Foreshore Trail. So used the excuse of field checking for Tuesday's pseud-o to ride the full length of the Skeleton Creek Trail as completed to date. Just a few hundred metres remaining to link the end of the Skelton Creek Trail to the Federation Trail. But that space requires crossings under the Princes Freeway, and it will be a long while that is completed.

Felt a lot hotter than I expected with a nasty north wind in my face along Derrimut Rd. I wasn't surprised to find it is currently 34 at Laverton. It was all I could do to keep on plodding. If I had had to stop for traffic at the Derrimut or Woodville crossings I would probably have walked home from there.

MTBnotO 34:39 [3] 10.2 km (3:24 / km)

Mail run. No mail today.

Tuesday Dec 15, 2009 #

Orienteering race (Pseud-O) 44:27 [4] * 6.7 km (6:38 / km)
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline ASR 4

Western Sunset SeriesStreet-O - Airport West.
Had real problems at the start. I literally ran around in a circle to get out of the park start and then changed my mind halfway along the first leg and doubled back, negating any benefit fronm the change of route. The other error was to go 14-3-6-18, but 14-6-3-18 was significantly shorter.
Pity about the reduced numbers. It wasn't particularly hot or hilly.

Wyndham Summer Series Street-O - Skeleton Waterholes Creek.
This was a much better effort on my part than last week's performance.
It is an incredibly good map and Julie set a very demanding set of controls in the more interesting parts of the map. Just the one control error which was a setter's parallel error by drawing the circle on the turning circle of the adjacent street. As the answer to the control question was "white elephant" those who couldn't find the control put it down to the course setter's sense of humour. I realised the probable error and back tracked to the adjacent court to confirm the error.

Western Sunset Street-O - Old Williamstown. An honest course without any high points. There didn't seem to be much variation in chosen routes.
