Warmup along Werribee River before Fun Run.
9 AM

Running race 45:40 [4] 8.05 km (5:40 / km) vdot: 34.0
shoes: Brooks Vapor 8 (2010)

Wyndham Rotary Fun Run.
A very successful run. This is the fastest I have averaged in a run for many years.
Local street orienteers managed three placings. Kiplings Mum won the Veteran Womens 8km run. I came second in the Veteran Men's 8km run. And Julie S came second in the Senior Women's 3km run. And we got heaps of publicity for the Emus club and street orienteering courtesy of the announcer who had attended the event I organised at Altona last Tuesday. As well as the trophies KM won a spot prize of a pair of Brooks Vapor shoes. It is too bad for her that she doesn't wear Brooks shoes and I do.

Running warm up/down 6:22 [2] 1.0 km (6:22 / km)

Run along the River Track back to the car.

Walking (Dog running) 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: Brooks Vapor 8 (2010)

Took that dog for a run on the beach. Even after running around madly on the wet sand the little mutt still had enough energy to jog home, once we had climbed back up onto the flat.

Orienteering race (Pseud-O) 1:00:14 [4] * 9.57 km (6:18 / km)

Geelong Summer Series Street-O - Grovedale.
Having completed 3 B course events and gotten myself onto the overall results listing, I ran A course tonight to get some additional distance training. Needless to say, I came in at the back of the field. Geelong has some quality athletes running A course.
This was a surprisingly hilly course and with no local knowledge and no contours on the map my route choice was based entirely on distance. As I ran I felt that I might have made different route choice to reduce height gains and losses. Another excellent map and great course setting. Geelong is fortunate to have an orienteering draughtsperson working on their maps. The quality is consistently high.

Altona Mount. A short run to check that all the tapes had been collected after last night's pseud-o. I found just one left out. This was a good run through sand dune terrain followed by the ascent of the eastern escarpment of the Mound.

Orienteering (Pseud-O) 2:05:00 [1] * 9.59 km (13:02 / km)

Control checking and map fieldwork for next Tuesday pseud-o. Pleasantly cool by the Altona foreshore.

MTBnotO 29:39 [3] 10.2 km (2:54 / km)

Mail run. I can conclude that raising my bike seat to the maximum has increased my speed - all the recent extreme times are minima.

Geelong Summer Series Street-O - Jan Juc.
Great map and an interesting course. A really enjoyable run although a bit short. I started out with about a 1.5 km run south-west along the cliff-top walking track. A head wind but the view was pleasant if only of the sea and cliffs. Then I worked my way back downhill through Jan Juc. I could drop 5 of the 20 controls and these were fairly obvious - there was an eastern loop of 5 controls, and a western loop of 5 controls. The eastern was longer. Full marks for the map but knock off a few because the route choice for B Course was limited. Of the 3 Geelong events I've attended this year, this would be the best map and location, and last week's event at Geelong West would be the best course. Fyansford Common misses out because although an interesting area it had too many "in and out" legs.

Western Sunset Series Street-O - Edgewater Lake.
Had a good run and result although the latter would be more due to my fellow B coursers making worse decisions. My first control was one I should have visited last because I changed my mind about which 3 controls to drop after about 3 controls. So could have shortened my run by 300m.

Geelong Summer Series Street-O - Geelong West.
Very wet. A monsoonal downpour started at 6:45 for 10 minutes before it reverted to light rain. The map wasn't very exciting - all rectangles of varying dimensions - and the control descriptions were in impossibly small print. However the course was really well set and until the 4th last control I had not decided upon my final combination. Had a most enjoyable run in the rain. Slowed a bit by having to remove the control card from the map bag in order to punch at each control. Must remember to stock the street-o bag with cc bags if I'm to attend more Geelong series events.

Running 39:13 [3] 6.2 km (6:20 / km)

David Ct-Underpass-Heathdale Wetlands. Unpleasantly hot and humid.

MTBnotO 32:39 [3] 10.2 km (3:12 / km)

Mail run. Bike riding is much more pleasant than running on days like this with the wind blowing onto a wet t-shirt.

Orienteering race (Pseud-O) 46:00 [4] * 6.8 km (6:46 / km)
shoes: Brooks Vapor 8 (2010)

Western Sunset Series Street-O - Seddon Ridge. The winner appeared to take about the same distance as me but I had less climb (for what that is worth on this map). So it just came down to running speed,

You Yangs. Checking tagged control sites and proposed new sites for the March 28 Duo Real-O components. Got some good running in between periods of searching for orange tapes and alternative control sites. The scrub is thinning and only Victorians would complain about it. Tasmanians would want to know why it isn't mapped as white.

Riding in the rain. A bit humid earlier in the morning so delayed the ride until it looked like a change was imminent.

Orienteering race (Pseud-O) 1:09:29 [4] * 9.65 km (7:12 / km)

Geelong Summer Series Street-O - Bunyip Pool.
Pseudo orienteering, real rain. I've had my eye on this area for a few years and it has finally been mapped and an event held. It was worth the trip down for the experience. The course was set in the "park" area, avoiding the residential as much as possible. With only one crossing point of the Barwon and 2 crossing points of the Moorabool there was some inevitable retracing of several legs as there were several "in and out" legs. With several sets of wet wooden steps and sections of slippery basalt rocks everyone's kilometre rates were slowed. Courses were long - I did B course.
