Orienteering event 58:00 [3]

SN urban event at Frimley. Mix of urban and parkland. Made one mistake in the urban section - took a wrong turn - maybe didn't orientate my map carefully enough. Apart from that no navigational problems.

Note

Before I started this period of training, I was mostly going round courses with my mum, and mostly walking.

The first step I took was to challenge myself to go out on courses by myself. At first I got lost sometimes, and once couldn't finish a course. As I practised, I became more confident about going out by myself, and about relocating if I got lost. I have now completed a range of different types of course by myself - sprint, urban, park, score, and forest. I have also been able to jog for most of the way, and run fast at times.

Some of the techniques I have learned include making a plan at each control, using attackpoints, and knowing how to jog at a speed so I don't run out of energy. I have also learned to read pictorial control descriptions.

The course I most enjoyed was probably the orange course at Cutteslowe Park, because I found it easy and was able to run fast all the way. The course I was most proud of was day 2 of the JK as I was able to complete a technically difficult course.

My aim now is to complete my age group courses at the Scottish 6 Day and to continue improving and enjoying orienteering.
