Step into Life group 1:00:00 [3]

Tone up session with heavy weights (used 5kgs tonight). Tonight's session incorporated cardio with tone up exercises. I did unweighted squats after suffering from sore knees last time I did weighted squats. Last heavy weights session for a while.

Step into Life group (Powerflex) 1:00:00 [3] 1.5 km (40:00 / km)

The stretch session today had a higher element of yoga than before. Very good session. I walked there and back...

orienteering 59:48 [3] 5.14 km (11:38 / km)
shoes: Innov8 bright

Night championship event, held on a night with a lovely bright almost full moon. Chris Naunton had organised the event, complete with assembly area light, fire ( in a barrel), and screens with livelox tracking. There were 3 loops in the same area, but because it was dark, many of us had difficulty finding the controls we'd already been to, coming from a different direction. I was very slow and confused in places. DNF'd after stopping for a wee and realising I'd been out for an hour already and many people had finished their courses. What a great event!

Step into Life group (Powerflex) 1:00:00 [2] 3.0 km (20:00 / km)

Warm up jog twice around the lake, then some lovely stretchy exercises.

orienteering 1:16:00 [3] 6.0 km (12:40 / km)
shoes: Innov8 bright

Orienteering at Mt Korong. Warm sunny day, eagles soaring, and I set out on course 2 with less than an hour before we wanted to leave for home. I should have done course 3. As always my navigation was patchy and I lost time on a couple of controls. Before I knew it, the time was already 1:15 so I abandoned my course and ran back to the assembly area.

Step into Life group (Cardiomax) 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Crimson brooks

Cardio circuit session which kept us puffing and our heart rates up, but we weren't running much distance.

Step into Life group (Tone up) 1:00:00 [3]

Tough session with Gayle and heavy (5kg x 2) weights.

orienteering 1:15:22 [4] 8.0 km (9:25 / km)
shoes: Salomons

Orienteering was using a new map today in the forest near Redesdale. Similar terrain to the Kimbolton forest, with scattered rock features. My navigation performance was woeful. I was very confused on a couple of legs; found myself doing 180 degrees errors twice.

Saturday Apr 14, 2018 #

orienteering 57:28 [3] 5.76 km (9:59 / km)
shoes: Salomons

Local orienteering in the Kangaroo Gully area. It was pouring down just after we arrived and I doubted that I'd even start as we stood under the shelter holding it steady in the strong wind gusts. The rain did subside and I went out and ran my course. Not fast, but not many errors.

Step into Life group (Powerflex) 1:00:00 [2] 1.5 km (40:00 / km)
shoes: Brookes Glycerins

Powerflex stretch session by the lake, in the rain. Ilka came too, and the mood of the group lifted as the rain gradually got a bit heavier throughout the session until we all gave up our final relaxation session at the end when we were showered upon.

Bushwalk 6:30:00 [4] 19.0 km (20:32 / km) +800m 16:57 / km

From our campsite we headed out along Riggals spur, down to Lake Tali Karng. Did a bush bashing detour along the end of the spur to Echo Point in order to get a view of the lake below us. The view just showed that the lake was a long way down very steep slopes.
Back to the track and down...
The lake itself had a low water level and it appeared that there were no creeks running into it; both feed in creeks were dry. Despite this, the water was clear. It was a very isolated peaceful place; one which, if you had time, would be great to just soak up the atmosphere. Camping there these days is discouraged due to Aboriginal cultural preferences.
Next was the massive climb back up. We decided to climb up Gillio spur as it is the steeper one and our knees are getting old. So glad that we'd left our packs up top. The climb back to our packs took 1.5 hours, and we had lunch when we reached the packs. Then came another slogging climb up and over Spion Kopje, which had multiple 'false' summits, each of which was very rocky. I was exhausted already from the previous climb. Now we had packs on and were suffering from the old post lunch lethargy as well. From the top we had amazing views though, so the climb was rewarded. The walk back to the car took another couple of hours. Pretty tired! We drove down to find a car camping site along the Wellington River.

Bushwalk 4:50:00 [3] 15.0 km (19:20 / km) +300m 17:35 / km

After driving from Drouin that morning, we headed out for a 2 day hike from McFarlanes Saddle, along high country snow plains and through groves of re-growing snow gums (burnt in 2006). Took a packless detour to the top of Mt Wellington, at 1634, a rocky and very windy mountain top. Back to the packs and continued walking to our campsite at Nyimbo, a new camping area located between Millers hut and Riggals hut. We had to walk out to get water, a significant walk down a track to a watercourse. Decided to walk from there to check out Millers hut, where we found 3 x 4WD pop top campers (there is 4WD track access and a woman sitting on a chair knitting in the most idyllic location amongst big trees and soft grass.... the old hut was a classic.

run 28:44 [3] 5.05 km (5:41 / km)
shoes: Crimson brooks

Morning run up and down the creek. Back was feeling stiff at the start and left foot still feeling jarred after Monday’s rough terrain.

Step into Life group (Tone up) 1:00:00 [3]

Heavier weights: 2x5kgs session.

Monday Apr 2, 2018 #

orienteering 37:16 [4] 3.26 km (11:26 / km)
shoes: Innov8 bright

Easter Day 3; the map was a mixed rough forest and adventure park.
The rough forest was extremely rough underfoot; rocky with bracken and knee high scrubby grass and prickly bushes. There was a very high risk of falling and twisting ankles.

orienteering race 1:06:41 [5] *** 5.46 km (12:13 / km)
shoes: Innov8 bright

Day 2 of the Easter competition was again at Lovely banks, but this time the course was largely on farmland. The course wasn't as interesting or enjoyable as day 1. I also made more errors, finishing 27 minutes behind the course leaders.
