Jura Fell Race

Decided to run in the waterproof jacket from the start, which I think was the right decision in the conditions. Climbed to CP1 a front pack of about 15, straight up into the clag but legs feeling good. Confident with route choice (fresh in the mind from last month's recce) whilst a lot of others were out with map and compass.
Pace seemed to up enroute to CP2 and I sat right at the back of this group of 15 or so before starting to lose touch. I took a different line than the rest of the group descending off CP2 which seemed to pay off as I rejoined the pack at the bottom of the hill having closed the gap.

Full on clag from here on in as the front group gradually split up and completely lost sight of the leaders. Kept pushing on with energy levels high but felt like I was dropping back through the field. Joe Symonds passed on the climb to Pap 1 before Es and Ian Holmes passed on pap 2. Looking at the splits i must've been sat in 11th at this point. Starting to think i'd blown it I set myself the challenge of holding onto Es for first Lochaber! Stuck in with Es all the way to the road, passing Joe Symonds and Ted Ferguson and closing down Andy Fallas. Still no idea of position at this point with very little visibility. Hit the road neck and neck with Es and Andy, to much surprise still feeling great with energy to burn! Took on a gel and lit the afterburners. Soon dropped Es and ran neck and neck with Andy for most of the road, picking off Calum and Chepelin enroute who looked like they'd blown up....
Legs starting to feel heavy towards the end of the road and a few signs of cramp starting to appear. Dug deep and held on, opening up a very slight gap over Andy with about 1k to go. What a race! Up there with the best races i've ever had.

Fuelling wise I treated this just like another SE session. A gel every 20 mins (there or there abouts) except on the final climb to Corra Bhein where i took a couple of shot bloks. Final gel taken on at start of road. (8 MF sport jellies and 2 shot bloks in total). Energy levels felt high throughout. Never hit the final road section feeling so good before.
Had planned to carry 500ml of water but with wet and colder conditions only carried 100ml from the start before topping up at river crossing before pap 1 climb. Probably no more than 200/250ml consumed in total.

30' Easy + Strides

A good stretch of the legs after a few hours driving/ sat on the boat to Jura. Out and back along the road from Craighouse, mainly sticking to the grass verge. Very easy, very comfortable. Strides on the way back.

40’ easy + strides

Easy out along the canal, keeping to the grass verge where possible. One spot on the ankle is still a bit sore when touched but no issues with it when running.

60’Moderate
Out and back along the canal. A bit of tailwind on way out and running into a slight headwind on way back. Kept it comfortable and legs turning over nicely.
Thinking back to last year and even earlier this year, I definitely wouldn’t have felt so comfortable running at this pace for an hour!

60’ Easy + hill sprints

Ran the first 20’ or so on some fairly rough trails, to give the ankle a good pre-Jura check more than anything else. Then the rest on some more straight forward trail. All quite undulating. The ankle was a bit sore to touch in one spot but seemed to hold up fine running on the more technical ground. 6 x hill sprints on the forest road - felt good and explosive.

Road bike hills
40k / 972m

Started with 20' easy from the house, through town to the foot of Lundavra hill. So many hills around Fort William but this is the only decent length one on the road. A steepish hill but able to stay seated for the whole thing, keeping to a moderate intensity for the repeats. Bottom to top was taking between 7.5 - 8', did 6 repeats with an easy ride back down in between. Finished with 30' easy on the flat. Looking forward to an 'easy' week now before Jura!
