Note
(sick)

Quickly on the mend but it still hurts to move my eyeballs around in their sockets (weird!).

Note
(sick)

So I slept 7.30pm - 7.30am and managed to shiver and sweat my way through the worst of the bug. Felt a lot better by the second half of the day, although went to bed with terribly achy muscles.

Today was my last day at RET, tomorrow I start with AusAID in the Budget Branch. Just to make life really easy I felt dreadful with full-blown flu symptoms all day. I blame the typhoid tabs I've just finished taking plus the two jabs I got last week (to cover 5 diseases). How is my immune system to cope with all that plus ill people constantly around me?? hehe
Whinge over.... I now just have to face a fun day tomorrow where I meet lots of new people and learn new things while trying not to die.
Edit: (but I am excited about the new role!!).

Ah fuck. I guess I have to admit that I am sick. Thought I had super immunity after defeating my month-long cold in Jan 2011... but I guess not :P

Note

Shattered.

And I was stuck at work so missed street-o. Probably a good thing.

Note

In the morning we packed up and walked the 200ms or so to the summit. Perfect sunshine and great views! Apparently it was foggy in Canberra until 2pm… unlucky.

Then it came time to descend. Up until now we had been following a route taken by a local man who climbs everything that can be climbed (Alex kept referring to him as “old man” though I’m not sure if this was just a nick name given to him). I was keen to follow old man’s route back the way we’d come as he had done, but the others, two of whom were suffering colds, weren’t keen to bash through the first bit and thought a more direct route home could be a go-er. We set off down the most direct ridge but that was pretty horrendous with massive boulders and thick scrub in between. We decided to drop off the ridge more sharply and head towards Middle Creek, re-joining our route up at one of the flat marsh sections. We had effectively cut off two sides of a triangle so it wasn’t too bad in the end. The boys were suffering and were topping up on drugs quick regularly… but I didn’t think the whisky the previous night would have helped things :) We bashed down the hill for the rest of the day, reaching the car just before 5pm. Let’s just say I didn’t have much skin left on my hands and ankles when I finished :s

Note

Headed down into Namadgi NP to climb Mt Namadgi. Not many people would say that sentence in their lifetime! It’s a full two-day walk through thick scrub and definitely one for the hardier type of bushwalker. But hey, hardy’s my middle name! (ho ho ho).

We were a party of four; Jasmine, Craig, Alex and I, with Matt giving the walk a miss due to his cold. We started walking at 9am and made our way up the side of Middle Creek, all the way to the flat plain before the final climb up the Mt. We filled up with water and continued bashing our way up to the last few contours where the thick scrub gives way to Alpine openness. This last bit of bush was particularly challenging to get through, and the light was fading quickly. We were carrying big packs which made it hard to squeeze through tiny gaps – and I was carrying a three-man tent just for me! We popped out just on dark (~5.20pm) and found a camp spot. Then we spent the evening round a fire eating and drinking til midnight :)

1 PM

Running (on & off-road) 48:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Lunchtime run from work up Mt Ainslie and back.

Wednesday May 22, 2013 #

7 PM

Running (streets) 50:30 [3] 10.38 km (4:52 / km)
shoes: Kayano 17

To the far reaches of Red Hill suburb, then through Forrest and around Telopea Primary. Was going to do 60mins but it was already 8.30pm and I was quite bored. Running in drizzle in Canberra is a rare experience and so that made it a little more interesting.

Tuesday May 21, 2013 #

7 AM

Running (on & off-road) 42:00 [3] 7.53 km (5:35 / km)
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Can't run tonight so I did a morning run. Whoa. Up to Davo's Trig and back.

Sunday May 19, 2013 #

4 PM

Running (paths) 53:00 [3] 9.38 km (5:39 / km)
shoes: Asics Trabuco

A full lap of Red Hill from the carpark.

Note

Bushwalk up to Tidbinbilla Mt then along to Tidbinbilla Peak. From there we headed down a spur to meet the Camels Hump fire trail, and then back to the car. We were out from 10 - 4.30. Beautiful sunny clear day, good track up to Tidbinbilla Mt but some beastly little trees to force our way through on the top section of the spur down to the fire trail. A good day out :)

Friday May 17, 2013 #

7 PM

Running (streets) 39:00 [3] 8.12 km (4:48 / km)
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 13

A loop through Narrabundah & Red Hill. A bit fartleky so as not to let the legs and lungs get lazy.

Wednesday May 15, 2013 #

6 PM

Running (streets) 50:00 [3] 9.97 km (5:01 / km)
shoes: Kayano 17

The Yarralumla loop but back through Barton instead of lakeside, finishing at the bottle-o to pick up some wine :) Surged the hills.

Tuesday May 14, 2013 #

6 PM

Running (streets) 34:30 [3] 6.9 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 13

Through Narrabundah & Red Hill with a surge up Sprent St (5.5mins). I tried out my new shoes - first pair of non-Asics running shoes in over 10 years. Didn't really like them, they are a bit big for me and it feels as though I am running on two short planks of wood, but you never know I might get used to them.

6 PM

Orienteering race (streets) 36:00 [4] ** 7.29 km (4:56 / km)
18c

Street-o (score) at Hughes. Luckily the drizzle cleared within the first 5mins, so the conditions weren't too bad.

Saturday May 11, 2013 #

Running (fire trails) 3:05:40 [3] 30.88 km (6:01 / km)

A nice run from Bull's Head on the Mt Franklin Road with ALJ and Matt. We visited the Bendora Arboretum first, then ran a loop on the side of the range. The weather was beautiful and it was lovely to be out there. My knees got pretty sore (just general old-age soreness) and I was pretty tired by the end.

Orienteering race (Long) 1:16:54 [4] *** 10.2 km (7:32 / km) +305m 6:34 / km
19c

ACT Long Champs & NOL race, Boboyan Divide.
Pretty clean race, and such lovely terrain! Got a bit tired lifting my feet around 10 & 11, and completely out of energy by the finish.

Running warm up/down 5:00 [2]

Saturday May 4, 2013 #

9 AM

Orienteering race (Sprint) 23:27 [5] *** 2.2 km (10:40 / km)
24c

ACT Sprint Champs & NOL race, CSIRO.
Not a good race. Couldn't find controls 1 & 2 in the vegetation for a long time (3.5mins). Also 50secs lost at c8 where the mapping and control placement didn't make any sense. The rest of the course through the buildings was fun but by 23mins I was properly spent! ;)

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

1 PM

Orienteering race (Middle) 43:54 [4] **** 5.4 km (8:08 / km) +130m 7:15 / km
25c

ACT Middle Distance Champs & NOL race, Orroral Tracking Station.
Really tough middle race through lots of rock and vegetation (slightly more forgiving 'green' than that experienced last w/e at Wattle Ridge!). I had a good run but still dropped 1min on c10. Really enjoyed it.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]
