Orienteering race 1:04:13 [4] *** 8.2 km (7:50 / km) +245m 6:49 / km
19c shoes: Adidas Swoop - old

Long race on Froggatt Edge and Big Moor.
Lost 1min on c4 - was in the circle but didn't look left, instead followed people up a bank to the right and messed around there for a bit. The rest was quite good, it was a very physical course with all the tussocks on the moor but I just put my head down and tried to push hard. Felt good at the end and could have run for a little longer.
Fun to orienteer here as I used to run along Froggatt Edge and back along White Edge.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [3]

A fast uphill run to the start as I was laaaate. Just made it!
No cool down as I was freezing and just tried to get warm straight away.

Saturday Jan 30, 2010 #

Orienteering race 32:18 [4] *** 4.2 km (7:41 / km) +170m 6:24 / km
23c shoes: o-shoes

Middle race on Beeley Woods.
Two mistakes on c5 and c12 (50secs and 35secs). Some other wobbles and hesitations. Bit brambly and rocky underfoot in parts but it was an enjoyable course and I had fun.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Jog to the start and back from the finish. It was really frEEZing and I raced in 3 layers... my feet were so cold they went numb at the start :s

Running intervals (streets) 20:00 [4]
shoes: Runners

I ran 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 3, 2, 1 with 1min recovery between each. Didn't go max, but was still feeling it!
I managed to remember quite a good little loop that took me towards Southmead, through Henleaze, towards Stoke Bishop and finished with an explore through Westbury-on-Trym. Found some good quiet streets!

Running 31:30 [3]

10mins warm up, 7mins recoveries, 14.30 cool down.

Wednesday Jan 27, 2010 #

Running (paths) 1:07:00 [3]

Running race (cycle path) 19:21 [5] 5.0 km (3:52 / km)
shoes: Runners - old

Bridge Inn 5km.
Well I wasn't exactly up for a 5km race at 7.30pm in sub-zero temperatures but Matt had found this race and so I went along for moral support.
My layering went thermal-tshirt-thermal, plus hat and gloves.
Quite a lot of people there and the pace was pretty swift. I turned around at 2.5km in 9:20 and felt quite good, though there were a few gentle ups on the way back. Felt a stitch coming on nearing the 4km mark and it hit me right there with 1km to go, had to take tiny breaths and bend right over and shuffle to the finish, painful! And annoying. But I was pleased with my time anyway. It was kind of fun racing in the dark as I've done lots of training in the dark over the years.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

It was probably less than 15 minutes...

Monday Jan 25, 2010 #

7 PM

Running 1:00:00 [3] 10.47 km (5:44 / km)
shoes: Walshes

Monday night run with Alice Bedwell and Hanne. We did a similar loop to last week around Ashton Court. Borrowed Keith's headtorch and it was ace, thanks Keith!

Orienteering race 48:40 [5] *** 7.5 km (6:29 / km) +150m 5:54 / km
12c shoes: Adidas Swoop - old

CSC heat, The New Forest (Ashley Walk).
Running for my new club BOK.
A very open area with lots of heather and marshes, some hills here and there and lots of point features like pits. I tried to run really hard and go as straight as possible. It was going well up to c6 but then I made three mistakes:
c7: mis-interpreted the map (up/down) and therefore over ran by a lot (1.5mins lost).
c9: just running and not properly matching things. Relocated halfway through the leg and I was a fair bit off-line (1min lost).
c10: I really tried to go slow and get this one right but still missed it by 1min. Lots of others missed it too though so it was a bit weird.
Was really fun! Annoyed about the mistakes though, didn't concentrate enough. BOK did really well and we're through to the final :)

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Saturday Jan 23, 2010 #

2 PM

Running (streets) 18:00 [3]

Ran with Matt to get our car from the other side of the downs where we left it on Friday night.
3 PM

Running (paths) 1:19:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas Swoop - old

Once in the car we drove straight on to the Mendips (hills) and did a run around there, starting near Burrington. It was nice to get into the country and I kind of enjoyed the run, although the mud and surface water was really atrocious and slowed me down. The hills were nice though :)

Friday Jan 22, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

I think I'll have a rest day today as I'm still coughing occasionally from last week's nasty cold.

Thursday Jan 21, 2010 #

12 PM

Running (streets) 40:00 [3]
shoes: Runners

My run went through Southmead, Henleaze, Westbury on Trym. I came across the Henleaze shops so now I know where they are. It was a good map memory exercise and I didn't get lost! Might try and get a map with street names on it though...

Running 20:00 [4]
shoes: Runners - old

Did 10 x 2mins (1min rec) - it was hard going! Didn't push too hard as t'was the first sesh of the year but still felt a bit stiff and unnatural. Went Shirehampton Park, Sneyd Park, Downs, Stoke Bishop, home. Bit main-roady so probs won't be a regular loop - will need to tweak it to include quieter roads. Quite cold and a bit wet.

Running 31:00 [3]

10mins at the start, recoveries, 11mins to finish.

Tuesday Jan 19, 2010 #

Running 1:10:00 [3]
weight:53.9kg shoes: Walshes

Googled 'Blaise Castle' and from the city council webpage found a copy of the orienteering map, so printed that off and went for an explore. Ran along various paths then got up onto Kings Weston Hill and ran along that. Kept going into Shirehampton Woods for a bit, then turned around. Took a different route back through Blaise Castle Estate.
This place is just across the road from our house! Didn't see any castle but.

Running 54:00 [3]
shoes: Walshes

Monday night run - girl group with Alice and Alice, Hanne, Laura, Fiona, and Rhys came with us too. We ran from Keith and Matt's house in Clifton, across the suspension bridge to Ashton Court, around that and back. Mainly on open grass but a little bit on single track and I couldn't see shit.
Note to self: buy a headlamp!

Sunday Jan 17, 2010 #

3 PM

Running long 1:33:00 [3]
weight:54.2kg shoes: Walshes

Ran with Matt round Leigh Woods, Abbots Pool, and Ashton Court. Felt pretty tired for the second half (sore knees as well).

Saturday Jan 16, 2010 #

Note

It rained all day today and so all the snow melted. It was a long day for Matt and I, we finished loading up, cleaned cleaned cleaned, then eventually left Leeds in convoy for the trip down to Bristol. Heaps of rain and fog for the drive down. Got in at 9pm and did a bit of unloading.
Goodbye Leeds.

40 hours travelling back to Leeds.

Running 54:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Asics Trail Attack

From the Springs to Junction Cabin. Then I was going to run back and down to Shoobridge bend but conveniently there was a new track called the North-South track that went from the cabin straight to Shoobridge bend, so I went along that. It was a cool track and I wished I had my mt bike! Then back up to the Springs via Radfords track.
Still quite sick but didn't want to pass up the opportunity to run one last time in the warmth.

Sunday Jan 10, 2010 #

Running 46:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Asics Trail Attack

A late run at the Waterworks/Ridgeway after a full day on the Tasman Peninsular. Similar run to last week, but cut out Halls Saddle and Chimney Pot Hill. Nice :) (although still coughing a fair bit).

Note

The Acropolis, 12 hour bushwalk, 4pts.
Caught the first boat across Lake St Clair at 9am. Various stops and motor problems meant we didn't get to Narcissus Hut until 10.30. Walked into Pine Valley hut (1pm). Climbed the Acropolis, reaching the top at 3pm. Truly awesome. So many speccy mountains around there. But we were really short of time so had to head back down, only stopping for 10mins to eat lunch. Back at Pine Valley hut at 5pm.
Then we had to jog back to Narcissus hut to save time (6.30pm). The walk back along the side of Lake St Clair takes 5hours so we had to run to Echo Point Hut (7.45pm). Then I could only walk so we made it out at 10.15pm with only an hour or so in darkness. Not too bad.... it was always going to be a long day. It did bring back some memories of running the overland track in 2006, ouch.
Then it was a three hour drive back to Hobart.

Running 2:00:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Trail Attack

Lets say I jogged for 2 hours (it was probably more).

Thursday Jan 7, 2010 #

Note
(sick)

We didn't run up Dundas as I wasn't well enough, so we chose Mt Owen and Matt ran up it while I walked up (approx. 3hours return). 3pts.
The weather was absolutely fantastic with not a cloud in the sky, and I really enjoyed the views the whole way up (and down).

Wednesday Jan 6, 2010 #

Note
(sick)

Woke up with a really sore throat after a cold night in the tent. Didn't do a morning run in the national park like I would have liked.
Went exploring around Zeehan/Strahan/Queenstown.

Tuesday Jan 5, 2010 #

Running 50:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trail Attack

Cradle Mt - Lake St Clair National Park.
From Ronny Creek car park, up the Horse Track and as far up Cradle Mt as I could run (in the nice warm sunshine).
Matt and I then climbed to the top of Cradle Mountain and back down. This took about 90mins as some bad weather passed over at that time and it was really hard to get off the mountain on the slippery rocks. I put on 3 layers to keep my core warm but other bits of me started to really freeze!
We then aborted plans for a longer run and headed down to Dove Lake, via Lake Wilks (40min walk).

Running 27:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Trail Attack

Back around the west side of Dove Lake. It was sheltered so I warmed up again!

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trail Attack

In the morning, we went for an orienteer on Jason's Task (some tricky erosion gully terrain). I think I got to most controls sites, but it was really vague and quite a difficult area. Many of the features on the map were quite faint on the ground. Would be good to do more of this kind of training.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Note

Climbed Ben Nevis (approx. 2hrs walking time). Got my 2pts and am now an honourable peak-bagger :)

Sunday Jan 3, 2010 #

Orienteering 1:50:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trail Attack

Headed up to St Helens today. In the evening, Matt and I went out to Livelys Bog to run the M21 course used for the NOL at Easter 09. I cut from c8-c14. It was good to be in some nice granite terrain again, I really enjoyed it. Nav was ok but made a couple of smallish sloppy mistakes near the end.

Running warm up/down 7:00 [3]

Saturday Jan 2, 2010 #

Orienteering 1:13:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trail Attack

5 Mile Beach. Went out there with my parents and Matt to run around some permanent controls. The first half was good through the flat pine forest, but the second half was heavily felled.

Running 1:01:00 [3]

Waterworks/Ridgeway (including a climb via Gentle Annie Falls to the top of Chimney Pot Hill). Nice and sunny, felt good.
