Orienteering race 39:48 [5] **** 5.2 km (7:39 / km)
shoes: o-shoes

EOC Middle Final, 37th.
Tried to go carefully to the first control, but didn't do it well and lost 1.5mins. I could hear the runner 2mins behind me approaching, so I ran hard and got c2 ok but missed c3 (same mistake... cut across the marsh early but didn't run along the knolls far enough). c4 and c5 were done badly too!! Four of us running around and I wasn't concentrating/reading my map well. Now I look at it and it looks clear and simple.

I ran hard from c5 to the spectator control and dropped a couple of runners, but also got caught at this point by some fast girls. The last loop was ok but I did have a fast FIN in front of me in the distance. I suppose a good thing from this race was that I was running quite strongly in the final loop, despite it being the end of a long week.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Only a warm-up today, forgot to cool down....

Orienteering race 30:33 [4] ***** 4.0 km (7:38 / km)
shoes: o-shoes

EOC - Middle Qual.
Yay, through to the final in 11th place! More technical terrain, but this time at a better scale for me. Not highly confident in this terrain, so changed my orienteering style from reading the map two or three times a leg (as can be done in Aus sometimes) to reading everything and constantly looking at the map. This meant I wasn't running hard but didn't make any big mistakes (just a few wobbles, c11 in particular).
However, I would need to run harder in the final to have a good result. I will try and run a bit harder, but keep map contact....

Orienteering race 1:30:56 [4] ***** 11.0 km (8:16 / km)
shoes: New sneakers

EOC Long Final.
Another tricky area with varying terrain, and much more physical than the previous day. I got the first control well but then lost 2mins on c2. I got c3 well and picked up a Swede on the way and led her in, she had started 2mins ahead of me. c5 was the start of the butterfly loop, and the Swede and I went different ways. Getting c6 involved crossing a massive swamp/lake and when I got to its edge I couldn't really believe that I was expected to cross it. I looked for the compulsory crossing that I surely must have missed, but alas there was none, and I had to wade/swim through the eel infested waters (well I thought there might be eels anyway). Spent 1min getting c6 and c7 and then it was back through the swamp again!!! (150m across??).
Lost a bit of time at c9, but my biggest time loss (3mins) was finding the butterfly central control for the third time... grr... it was so tricky in there! I didn't make any other notable mistakes, however I found the swamps and marshes very hard going, and there were many more on the course. I was very low in energy for the final loop, and luckily the nav was easy there, or maybe I wouldn't have made it around (I was very very tired and felt faint).
I'm not disappointed with 36th for this long final, it was tough and a good experience!

Orienteering race 46:42 [4] **** 6.5 km (7:11 / km)
shoes: New sneakers

EOC - Long Qual.
Tricky course in detailed sand dune/forest type terrain - especially difficult at 1:15000! I took it carefully because I was not used to the terrain at all, and I thought it best to be safe. I was never running that hard, and stopped completely each time I was nearing a control circle so I could read the detail. This cautious attitude paid off, as I had a clean run which doesn't happen every day for me, and I was rewarded with 6th place :)

Orienteering race 12:18 [5] *** 2.5 km (4:55 / km)
shoes: Runners - old

EOC - Sprint Qual, Ventspils.
The Sprint was through the town. I was feeling pretty good and didn't lose any time, which was just as well becuase the heats were all so close! Happy to qualify in 10th place.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Orienteering race 13:09 [5] *** 2.5 km (5:16 / km)
shoes: Runners - old

Sprint Final.
Not a bad race, started ok but maybe lost some seconds in the middle of the course, especially on the way to c9 (zig-zagged a bit). I think I could have only done 30secs better. Will need to learn to run a bit faster in finals too.... might help for next time :) 37th place.

Event: EOC 2008

Running 25:00 [3] **

Unfortunately I didn't know where or when to catch the bus to the model map, so I missed it. Later I jogged around the Sprint model map for a bit (it was a park).

Note
(rest day)

Travel to Latvia. This involved a relaxing 45min drive towards Stanstead, a stressful 45min drive back to Sheffield to get Matts passport, and a stressful 3hr drive to Stanstead..... but we made it with 10mins to spare - easy.

Running race (Oxford 10km) 40:31 [5] 10.0 km (4:03 / km)
shoes: Runners - old

These are the markers I got:
5km : 20:00
6km : 24:00
7km : 28:15
8km : 32:30
10km : 40:31
Tried to run a good first 5km, felt like I was running fairly hard so when I passed the 5km sign at 20mins I knew I wouldn't be able to get under 40mins. Felt really tired from the 6km marker onwards, but pleased my pace didn't drop off toooo much. Was glad not to get a stitch or funny tummy (I had the fruit salad / sausage combo for breakfast and wasn't too sure how that would sit).
I couldn't have run it any better on the day - to get under 40mins I would need to be running on fresh legs. Still a 10km PB for me.
Then spent a relaxing couple of hours eating and seeing the sights of Oxford with Rach, Alex, Mark and Matt with ex-student Alex as tour guide.

Orienteering race 22:11 [5] *** 3.7 km (6:00 / km) +140m 5:02 / km
12c shoes: New sneakers

JOC Chasing Sprint - Prologue, Bloom Wood.
Orienteering well and at a good speed. Good control flow and direction. Lost 30-40secs on c7 (small depression) - just dropped too low and had to climb back up a bit to get it. Pleased with my run, 2secs ahead of Sarah Rollins.

Orienteering race 20:09 [5] *** 3.3 km (6:06 / km) +90m 5:22 / km
13c shoes: New sneakers

Chasing Sprint, Bloom Wood.
Well it was all very well that I started first, but 2secs wasn't much help!! And I had Rach starting 30secs behind me too. Managed to stay ahead of Sarah until c4, but we then hit a hill and Sarah went vrooom out of sight. I then had Rach to worry about who was coming into controls as I was leaving them, and the pressure situation made me run as hard as I could! Navigation was again fairly solid, and I finished 2nd, 30secs down on Sarah.
Really enjoyed these races, a fun day!

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

Warming up for the two races (mainly the jog to the start) and a bit of a cool down.

To the bottom of Rivelin, up the valley, out of the valley via some paddocks and stables, back down through Crookes. It was late afternoon, beautiful warm weather and everyone was outside enjoying it. I actually enjoyed the run quite a bit!

10 x 2mins (1min rec) around Damflask. Calves didn't hurt as much as I thought they might; wearing runners instead of sneakers was probably a good idea (not as worn-out).

10mins before intervals, 10mins after. 2 laps of Damflask altogether.

Running 1:10:00 [3]
shoes: New sneakers

Public holiday and still in Wales. Beautiful weather so we headed for the hills. The carparks at Snowdon were packed so we started a bit lower down, ran up some of the way to Snowdon, past the lake a bit. Sat down to admire the view and couldn't be bothered moving for ages. Didn't keep going higher, ran back to the car instead after our long and pleasant sit-down.
