Note
(rest day)

Alton Towers. A diet of chocolate for breakfast, 3 donuts for morning tea, a cheeseburger a bit later, Maccas meal for lunch, 2 more donuts for afternoon tea. Feeling a bit ill at the end of the day :(

Note
(rest day)

A day of travelling after a couple of hours sleep. Good WOC party :)

Sunday Aug 26, 2007 #

Orienteering race 14:42 [5] *** 2.5 km (5:53 / km) +75m 5:07 / km
shoes: Old sneakers

WOC Sprint Final.
Good race. Clean run with a couple of unnecessary hesitations. It was a fun race and I really enjoyed it. Ran as hard as I could but that's not that fast and it's easy to see that a quicker run could have gained a lot of places. Still, it was a good way to end the week. 30th place.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Warm-up for sprint (Calves are good again).

Saturday Aug 25, 2007 #

Orienteering race 43:50 [5] *** 6.3 km (6:57 / km) +150m 6:13 / km
shoes: Old sneakers

WOC Relay, 2nd leg with Jo and Hanny.
Pretty happy with my run. Lost a bit of time on control 7 - looked in the right gully but couldn't see the flag, went on to the next one and then had to come back to it. Then on the next leg I ran on the wrong track for a bit. On my own for most of it and ran as strongly as I could, calves were still bad but they didn't effect my running. Terrain was really fun and I enjoyed the course. Happy with our 7th place as we all had good runs and couldn't do much more.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]

Orienteering 17:00 [2]

Sprint training. Went to a sprint model map with Jules and Kathryn in the city somewhere on the way home from the Relay. Map was quite fun.

Note
(rest day)

Woke up with really sore/tight calves. I blame wearing thongs all Thursday and walking up and down lots of escalators when I was lost in the subway for a while yesterday. Only left the hotel for a coffee.

Thursday Aug 23, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

Watched the Long Final.

Orienteering race 45:48 [4] ***** 5.1 km (8:59 / km) +90m 8:15 / km
shoes: o-shoes

WOC Middle Final.
Held it together until the spectator control which was c10 (of course there were small misses here and there but no disasters and I had pretty good map contact). Found the vegetation tough though.

Then there was a taped run through the arena from c10 and I got to the end of the run-through and it didn't seem clear where I was. So I stopped to work it out. At about the time I worked out where I was, I got the idea that I was navigating to c14 instead of c11 (looking at the loop backwards). I jogged in the direction of c14 (the last control)... but why are there people everywhere? And why am I on the wrong side of the tapes? No this must be wrong so I went away, but then I thought it has to be right (as I was still navigating to c14 at this stage), so I walked over and punched it, checked the code and realised that I was at the last control, so then headed on my merry way to c11. Bugger! So I wasted 2.5mins in the spectator arena. Then did c11-14 fine.

So yeah it was frustrating that I was so worried about the difficult terrain but in the end I didn't mess up in the terrain, I just got majorly confused at the finish/spectator area. A good learning experience I suppose. 32nd place.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

20 warm-up and then 10 mins jog afterwards with Jen.

Orienteering 30:00 [3]

Middle model (same area as middle qual). It didn't fill me with any more confidence. But I'm not getting lost, so why so scared of this terrain? I'm just not used to racing in it and the vegetation is rather unpleasant.

Monday Aug 20, 2007 #

Orienteering race 32:09 [4] ***** 4.0 km (8:02 / km) +55m 7:31 / km
shoes: Old sneakers

WOC Middle Qualification.
Very slow and not so steady. But no "mistakes", phew. Low visibility, green, prickly, yucky. 9th in Heat C - pleased with that!

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]

20 mins warm up and a short cool down with Jen and Rach.

Sunday Aug 19, 2007 #

Orienteering 30:00 [3]

Middle model. I don't feel confident in this terrain at all. (but I'm not making mistakes, just feel uncertain all the time).

Saturday Aug 18, 2007 #

Event: WOC 2007

Orienteering race 13:33 [5] *** 2.3 km (5:53 / km) +65m 5:10 / km
shoes: o-shoes

WOC Sprint Qualification.
Controls 1-7 pretty straight forward. 8 and 9 tricky, slowed down and went in cautiously. Maybe could have tried a bit harder speed-wise. 12th place in Heat A (and yes very relieved!)

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

Friday Aug 17, 2007 #

Orienteering 30:00 [3]

Sprint training.
Around some controls, some short bursts. Terrain not that interesting.

Thursday Aug 16, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

I have found a shop that sells Pringles and M&Ms so I am not disliking Kiev quite so much now.

Wednesday Aug 15, 2007 #

Orienteering 40:00 [2]

Middle training. Went out to some map with Matt and Jo. Lots of uncertainty, lots of walking....way too many spiders. Jogged waving a stick out in front of me for a while before it all became too much effort and I jogged back after doing 1.5 loops of the three.

Tuesday Aug 14, 2007 #

Orienteering 40:00 [3]

Bikovnia West (middle relevant).
Reasonably smooth.

Orienteering 22:00 [4]

Sprint training in some dirty park in the middle of Kiev.

Monday Aug 13, 2007 #

Orienteering 45:00 [3]

Bikovnia East (middle relevant).
Slow for the first quarter due to vegetation, smooth for the rest.

Orienteering race 21:56 [5] *** 3.2 km (6:51 / km) +180m 5:21 / km
18c shoes: I need to buy o shoes

Sprint race - Risdon Brook Dam (Hobart).
Great course, and fun to do a sprint race. Went out a bit too hard (as always) but then tried to finish well. The course even used features I hadn't been to before! (south bit of map). The short sharp hills were really tough, but I was rewarded with the satisfaction of beating both brothers ;)

Running 50:00 [3]

From North Hobart, up through West Hobart to tracks on Knocklofty, over the top and back down through Mt Stuart. It was quite a steep run but nice and relaxed and the sun came out at the end.

Saturday Aug 4, 2007 #

Orienteering race 33:22 [4] *** 5.2 km (6:25 / km) +180m 5:28 / km
18c shoes: I need to buy o shoes

"Goorooyarroo".
It was cold and windy. In an effort to harden up I didn't wear a thermal which I later regretted. Had a guy meters behind me for the entire course which annoyed me more than it should have. Didn't warm up or cool down because I was half asleep and yeah it was freezing. Hmm this is sounding negative - the course was good and actually orienteering is always more fun than just running!

slept:5.0 (rest day)

Nope. Training was about no.17 on my list of priorities today...

Wednesday Aug 1, 2007 #

Running (tracks) 38:00 [3]
slept:6.0 weight:53kg

The Pinnacle and a tiny bit on Mt Painter.
Spent a lot of today cleaning up broken glass - some fuckers thought it'd be fun to throw bricks through my car windows. Thanks guys, it's just what I need.
