felt awful just a slow trudge, like both tires out of air and brakes were on, wore very heavy extinct adidas winter trail shoes. probably staying up till 3:30am with daughter didn't help, and only food was a grapefruit at 9am, oh well

north chagrin, on bridle and foot paths. steady/easy pace, tried to pop the hills. carried map, no compass, actually very good practice on orienting map on the network of trails, love/hate relationship w/ hokas, every time i run i roll ankles, today rolled rt ankle 2x second was bad, had to stop and limp along for a minute, but 6 hrs later ankle is ok. lost wristwatch in cincy so guessed at time, wanted to run 1:45 but that was close enough because it started to rain when i was done, and by the time i changed in van, it was an absolute downpour. after errands came home and took 2 hr nap, ugh.

in mill stream, very muddy, very easy, some in woods to avoid the slop. the two weeks of double jobs is finally over, kind of fried. really sort of nice about 43f cloudy, calm, it was good to get back in the woods again.

orienteering (race) 1:35:40 [3]

green ultralong at east fork. warmup was trotting down trail to pee and jog back on road in rain.
start in pouring rain, couldn't read map, magnifier had no wiper, plus people running all over the place messed up things.
straight to 2. peter tripped on wire and took massive face plant downhill in front of me and the girl from csu, asked if he was ok.
all trails to 3 but messed up near control, couldn't read map well.
to 4 ran trail to corner a bit past control then tried to run a compass bearing in but pulled up short for some reason i thought the x was a rootstock and was behind the clearing and trail, so frantically searched realizing in the back of my mind the race was slipping away.
on way to 5 couldnt get out of prickers and shit to trail so i was really pissed. after 5 passed todd then ran up beside randy he looked at me and said "oh dave" (translation: geez you dumbass cant you do anything right!!!!), i just gave him a friendly ugh grunt and pushed on, in the woods had to stop for a pee break and tie shoe. saw ted good coming up on my right and randy a bit behind him, kept a good compass bearing but i think it was 49% skill 51% luck that i was just a bit left but saw control. i guess i just trusted myself and wanted to really push pace because i was feeling really good, and was on fire to make up time.
on to 7 when i came off trail and hit rd and turned left i saw peter up the road, and thought "oh good we'll find it together" i was running to the clearing but peter turned into woods (he was along barbed wire) it thought "whats he doing" i almost followed but thought to stick with plan, i hit clearing ran to end and glanced to my right and saw peter a bit behind and off to my right, i just pressed on as fast as i could, intentially aiming off to right and saw flag not the ditch.
to 8 tried to cut corner by using woods and going down/up a reentrant but it was a butt slide down, and crawl up which was really really slow, so at that point i thought f-this i'm running around everything this is a track meet from now on. also a touch embarrassing but i was talking out loud what i was doing/seeing to help with concentration.
on way to 10 stopped got a cup of G promised the guard i'd throw the cup away at the next water stop NW up the trail, he didn't believe me but i assured him i would, at the stop i threw the cup to the basket but it missed so i stopped and picked it up and put it in. i didn't want ocin to have a "litter cam" and be publically humiliated like the water cam in georgia. i ran around every reeantrant on way to 10, and 11.
on 12, was very cautious and had to do another shoe tie, i thought i was aiming off to the left to hit trail but i actually had drifted right and caught the trail running NE took off for +/- 15 sec. but compass was way off so i stopped figured out where i probably was and turned around and headed back to the trail intersection ran to bend in trail and turned hard left to hit the larger reentrant at a right angle but spiked the control.
overall felt very good, ran well considering the mud and prickers. posted route on routegadget.

orienteering (race) 58:00 [3]

ran red anchor leg for "the first place team". really confused at start by ballfield/trail, seemed like alot of trails so really slow to 1 to figure out where i was, ran past 14,15 on way to 2 to be sure of map/terrain, jon torrance rolled up but because of forking i just knew he was there and sort of ignored him. we did go different routes to 7, i was surprised to see him coming up hill after i punched. rest were basically straight. jon came up, then i got ahead walking up hill to 11 then heard him behind for the next few, then never saw him. i did think it was odd that he didn't just blow by and dissappear, i was walking hills running at a pretty good clip and orienteering good also.
