Holme Fell - Green
Not great today. Wobble on route to number 4 not paying enough attention but not too bad. Then blew 5 as didn’t even use my compass just thought ‘run over the marsh and then over the hill’ but ran the wrong direction and ended up on the wrong hill. Binned about 3 mins. Classic example of not using my compass when it’s obviously needed. Then blew 7 again not using my compass well, used it to an AP but then didn’t follow through with another good bearing to the next point on the leg and ended up climbing way too high getting confused with the paths. Binned another 5 mins. Then messed up at the end of 8 losing another 2-3 mins because yet again i would do a bearing at the start and then once my first AP was reached i wouldn’t continue the process and i’d just ‘run and pick up off the features’ but if you go slightly in the wrong direction then everything just looks the same! Relocated quickly enough but still disappointed. Quite a bit low on 9 losing another minute and then concentrated really well to the finish through a technical little bit making sure i used my compass and actually read the map. All good in this section other than a miss at 12 (30s) because I expected the control to be behind the hill but it was on the top and I didn't see it haha. The good legs show that I can orienteer well ish when i do things properly haha! Just need to work on doing that for the full course!
