Running 59:06 [3] 9.6 km (6:09 / km) +74m 5:56 / km

Monday night down the Frome Valley Walkway with Ben, Megan, Adam, Chloe and Mark. Nice new route, would be good to run the whole path to Yate at some point.

Orienteering race 1:10:24 [3] 10.9 km (6:28 / km)

Welsh League at Kenfig

Managed to eventually convince Rob that a "chasing start" would be a good idea so set off 2 minutes after him with Michael 2 minutes behind me. I would never see Michael again, until over 2 hours later but Rob appear in my sights leaving 11. This was a bit surprising as despite a decent start I had lost a minute on the long leg to 4 by taking a bad line after getting very confused by the vegetation in the marsh. This would cost me further time later on. By 12 I was 30 seconds behind him but then immediately lost a minute at 13 drifting right after going up the ridge.

From that point, I struggled a lot. Slow through the trees to 15 (confused by the veg) and then stopped concentrating completely on the way to 16 ending up a long way north of where I should have been. Finally, again confused by the trees in the marsh at 17 when I expected open land.

Need to work out how to deal with my HR better in these kinds of races. As soon as it gets over 192/193 and into zone 5 I often make these kinds of mistakes. Perhaps, the only solution is to learn to keep HR lower than pushing so hard to get into that zone.

The goal of 60 minutes would have definitely been possible given some cleaner lines but Megan's time was very impressive. I'm feeling stronger and faster than ever before so it's only a matter of time before a good result in one of these local races.

Going to be a challenging area for the western night league race here next year.

Orienteering race 36:25 [3] 5.5 km (6:37 / km) +100m 6:04 / km

Spent the weekend in the gower with Michael, Rob and Katherine for the two SBOC events. First up, middle distance at Oxwich.

Despite all the talk I couldn't deliver on my promise to beat Rob. Went out as fast as I could thinking that 30 mins would be an achievable time. Learnt after 6 controls that this was a bit unrealistic and suffered to the finish losing a lot of speed in the second half. Straight lines are often fastest but you have to execute them well and deal with the terrain, especially the sea side of the fence. Made 2 bigger mistakes (1 min) going through the green to 12, not sure how I lost so much time here and at the end going along the path too far for 22.

Got sunburnt afterwards after sitting around at the event and on the beach. Camped the night at Oxwich Camping Park which was nice and met some people from Bath who knew Eoghan.

Orienteering 37:30 [3] 8.8 km (4:16 / km) +74m 4:05 / km

BOK urban around Emersons Green. Better than previous attempts, picked up the correct map and calves not cramping. Enjoyed running through the "marsh" and a little adventure going through a hedge.

Note

I've reached "100% fitness". Time to retire.
