Orienteering race (BUCS Relay) 1:03:32 [3] 7.6 km (8:22 / km) +138m 7:40 / km

I wasn't sure what to expect from my first relay but I was second leg and there was no one really around me the whole way.

There was a long leg from 5-6 across most of the map which I lost 12 minutes on due to firstly an incredible route choice and secondly dropping my dibber going through some trees. Luckily I found it but it cost me another few minutes. Apart from that navigated mostly fine in a technical area but the brambles were quite oppressive, a long way from the beautiful white map of the area from a few years ago. In general a bit slow and demoralised after losing so much time early.

Orienteering race (BUCS Individual) 1:49:58 [3] 13.3 km (8:16 / km) +403m 7:11 / km

I was really excited for this race and was hoping to navigate cleanly to not lose too much time on each control.

My biggest mistake was on 11 where I ended up on a parallel path and lost about 8 minutes. Routegadget shows that I made a lot of small route choice mistakes which added a significant amount of distance overall. It sounds obvious but being as direct as possible saves you a lot of time. Also improving my running fitness is something that would have significantly helped on this course as I struggled up the hills.

In the end I was hoping to do a bit better than 74th but it was great racing in a high quality field and with lots of other UBOCers.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] 6.1 km (9:50 / km) +170m 8:38 / km

UBOC training on Cooper's Hill.

The map here is interesting with some intricate contour detail but also quite a bit of dark green. Mostly some good steep hill climbing practice. It was good to go to a new location which we don't usually train on.
