Orienteering 20:00 [3]
shoes: Integrator

Seemed to be an ill-fated attempt to get out... Knew I couldn't make the sprint or score-O, but thought I could get over to Mendon with enough time to run the sprint (without controls) as a little workout.

The foreshadow was when I was driving into the park, looked into the woods and thought - wow, it's rather dark in there...

So things start reasonable enough - I take the trail route. (looking now - that does look optimal to me. That's 3 or 4 full contours to avoid the pleasant trail run...-) I'm reasonably sure I did that right, and noticed someone picking controls with a headlamp on already, och...

And then I couldn't really tell where the 2 was. I could see some things, but not enough. Decided that back to the outer trail would let me see the map and if it wasn't the right way, it would still be ok. And then I used the light to look things over and saw that 2 was right there, and saw the flow of the course.

So I jumped into the woods and decided I was at 2.

3 - looked to be beyond where I was with 1, and I might as well run though this light forest to get back (instead of retracing to the trail) I took off at a good clip and several steps in the forest floor grabbed me. My left foot hadn't fully extended, and I was picking my right up and it caught under a thick branch. It was like someone yanked my feet back because my upper body extended and then I fell like a rock. (If someone had been able to see it, I'm sure it would have looked spectacular;-)

I'm actually quite happy that I wasn't really injured. (always wondered how that "breakfall" thing works - apparently like that) A couple light scrapes on the arms, chest, and side of my face, but nothing impaled or seriously damaged. My thumb compass however - bent, and magnifier broken (again!). I'm thinking it took quite some force to bend the directional portion on the front end of it - glad that wan't on a finger or something...

Dusted myself off and jogged along for a bit thinking "am I ok?"...

Reached where I thought 3 would be, and then down to 4 - but not quite sure - with a control it would be easy - "along the trail till you hit the control", but I think I overshot it, and went back.

5 was interesting in that I thought I was there, didn't see a ruined fence, and searched more, got to the trail beyond it and came back and did see some vague stones, and decided it must be a very indistinct ruined stone fence...

Got to where 6 should be, and then the darkness and inattention struck. I see now what happened - I thought I needed to cross the swamp, and couldn't find the path across that the trail seemed to give... Well, if you fold your map, and can't see in the dim light, you might just think you're at 6 when you're at 9 - and the lines go across the thing that's in front of you, and that's a swamp... (and no reading glasses or magnifier to clear things up)

Well, I went around the edge of the swamp for a bit and decided that I really didn't want to be running through it, and the effort was mostly a loss anyway, and perhaps it would be better to just head back - so I did;-)

Humbling, but an interesting time of it.

Did get to see first firefly of the year.
