Cycling 15:00 [1] 2.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Nice little warmup over to the park.

Orienteering race 18:34 [4] 1.6 mi (11:36 / mi) +90m 9:53 / mi
spiked:9/10c shoes: Integrator

Sprint at Lincoln Park.

8-9 clearly got to me...

I had the chance to run this same route again on the score-O, and understand what happened.

Leaving 8, the diagonal path to "the trail" was fine, and we were headed to a left to right trail. And then a thicket was in the way... the "better" way around this thicket was "around" to the right - and then on the other side of the thicket was a trail - that was running left to right!

But - we were only half way around the thicket - and so were off by 90 degrees, and turning right on this trail was absolutely the wrong thing to do...

On the good side, I did figure out the discrepancy, and fixed it by heading North. I didn't know where I had gotten, but it was the right way to go and got me back into things. (Hind sight, it might have been better to retrace steps to the control, but that always seems defeatist;-)

I also didn't quite find the trail branching off to the control, but made my way effectively and did reach it.

If I compare, that might be 2-3 minutes of error and seems to have hurt many more than I...

Orienteering race 1:11:11 [4] ***
spiked:22/24c shoes: Integrator

Score-O at Lincoln Park.

Good portions in first section and later on, couple big bobbles got in the way...

Train to 187, 154, 164, 155, and 156. (My brother's family did that as well, and this was their first outing;-) Continued to 157, 158, 159 like the sprint. Notably left 163 because it was down and up and could fit later.

172 along the bay next and then the first derailment... Wanted 176, spent 12 minutes getting it... Should have taken the low trail to get it, ended on the next and never really figured it out. For some reason I kept thinking that the control ought to be on trail I was on, but I wasn't on the right trail. Finally ended up down at the stream and went down the stream and back up the trail to get it. Frustrated...

The next plan was to get 177 - down to the stream again, cross the stream / marsh and up the other bank, right - no problem. Except that I didn't bother to read the map to see that I came out opposite a different hill and climbed it - and was one hill feature over. Went right, left, and then figured it out. 8:33 for this control...

Then I pulled it together for 178, 186, 183, 182, 185, 184, 181, 180, 179, and the loss of early time just got to me. I looked and saw I had 4 minutes left, and 4 controls and it just wasn't going to happen. I then noticed 162 (which looked like 182 at that point) and it was nearly on line with the finish and hey - the complex wasn't hatched out. So I climbed the ridge to get back nearly on time that way - and noticed the purple oob line after reaching the top. ugh....

So I decided that it was an overtime and I might as well get the others. I retraced my steps past 179 (about 5 minutes later) and went to 170 - in 7:19, then 161, 162, and 163. (finding a path there, but needing to cut over as it was not quite the right path - but a good recovery.)

On the good side, it would have been a fine result without the first two bumbles and not being in time trouble to make the third bad decision. I felt good throughout, and did string together good paths towards the controls.

Also - brother and family made the event and liked it, and indicated they'd come back.

Cycling 15:00 [2] 2.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Bike trip home as an easy warmdown.

Walking (Mowing) 45:00 [3]

So I was feeling so good that after a quick dinner I decided the lawn needed mowing... 7 full wegmans bags full of pine cones later I was ready. (believe that has to be a new record - they all fell since 5 days ago when I last picked them up before mowing...) Decided 45 minutes and the front yard was the essential portion and called it quits.

Was a bit dehydrated and not so with it the rest of the evening.
