Running - Trail / Grass warm up/down 10:00 [1] 0.2 mi (49:59 / mi)
slept:6.0

A few minutes of jogging either slowly or in-place, mostly while waiting in the portable toilet line.

I had a good run at the Bog Slog at Lord Hill. I was jockeying for the lead with Will for most of the race, and I only pulled ahead for good when he stayed too low (and to the right) going to #15. I had a bit of a low moment a couple controls earlier but was feeling good and looking forward to a fight to the finish, but I was not sorry to be able to run at a fairly relaxed pace at the end instead. Will seems to be getting faster and hard to beat, even in longer races now. I'm looking forward to seeing Will's GoPro video and seeing the replay on RouteGadget.

Between arriving later than I had planned and then waiting for a long time for the toilet, I didn't get much warm-up running in before the race, but the running in place seemed to get my legs feeling warm and supple. Still, the 200m climb to the first few controls felt quite jarring to my cardiovascular system. I felt good after the terrain profile leveled off some and I got well into the race.

Highlights:
- My right calf didn't hurt, so it really seems to be doing well after I strained it at cross country nationals on December 12.
- I mostly navigated well and kept fairly focused most of the time.
- The course was fun, with a variety of leg lengths and navigation problems.
- My legs felt better than they have for the past week or so, when they were feeling more sore and a bit stiff.
- The weather was nice for racing: cold with damp ground, but not rainy or windy.
- My route choices were optimal or near-optimal, as far as I can tell.

Lowlights:
- I took a few poor micro-routes, e.g. cutting through the green on the way to #11 and squandering a ~100m lead, and making a similar but smaller green cut on #15-16.
- A few of my exits from controls were a bit sloppy; I could have benefited a few times from greater planning and precision.
- I found myself seeing controls late sometimes due to not consistently looking around and well ahead.
- Six of the controls were noticeably in the wrong place (or the map was wrong), although only one resulted in more than 30 seconds of lost time.
- I sustained a few bumps and somewhat scary/uncontrolled falls and whacked my right shin on a log fairly painfully once. But luckily, I didn't impale myself on a stick or break myself on any rocks or logs.

Running - Trail / Grass (trail) 1:00:00 [1] 3.85 mi (15:35 / mi) +68m 14:46 / mi

I jogged around very slowly at Paradise Valley Conservation Area measuring some trails. The trails I explored were in remarkably good shape, given the recent very wet weather.
