Cycling tempo 33:18 [3] 6.34 mi (5:15 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:124lbs

Bike to work.

I got lucky and found half of a blueberry cake donut in the break room. Score!

I don't usually like to come back to work after a nice vacation, but this time I came back to a fabulous WINDOW CUBICLE that I moved into on the Friday before I went to Laramie. I face west towards the mountains and it's about 50% bigger than the standard cubes. I love it.

Cycling 37:00 [3] 7.1 mi (5:13 / mi)

Bike home, with a stop at the grocery store.

Orienteering race (Green course) 1:05:49 [3] 4.33 mi (15:12 / mi) +673ft 13:15 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Vasque Adrenaline

Today was much better -- I was pretty happy to be a full 25 minutes faster than yesterday (which illustrates just how awful I did yesterday!). I might have veered off the optimal line on occasion, but I didn't do any wandering or circling. I tried to jog the whole time, rather than walking.

It's always demoralizing to feel like I did really well (for me) and then hear everyone talk about how easy the navigation was -- but I guess that was pretty much the case today.

It was clear to me both today and yesterday that I need to concentrate more on hill climbs in my training.

Orienteering race (Green course) 1:30:12 [3] 4.59 mi (19:39 / mi) +554ft 17:38 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Vasque Adrenaline

The first three controls were pretty easy, so I think I wasn't concentrating much on my way to #4. Big mistake! I ended up wandering around for about 15 minutes. I finally climbed up on top of the highest rocky knoll I could find, to try to figure out where I was. Ugh. (Later, Terry Farrah showed me a reentrant that led right into the control. DOH!)

I had smaller but still significant mistakes on a few other controls. Very unimpressive.

Orienteering (Sprint course) 41:15 [3] 1.86 mi (22:11 / mi) +223ft 19:55 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Vasque Adrenaline

The registration table was really busy, and I thought it would be a good idea to take it easy the day before the US Champs. So, I decided to just walk the Sprint course. Mental and physical exhaustion must have been starting to take a toll, because the first thing I did was head 180° in the wrong direction from the Start. I found #7 while I was wandering around trying to find #5, so I just proceeded on to the rest of the controls from that point. Not a spectacular outing.

Note
slept:6.0 (rest day)

I knew the vegetation on the Happy Jack map was pretty thick, so I opted to just hang out at the registration table all day. Which turned out to be a fortuitous decision, because I got to meet the horse-race organizer who has exclusive rights to the Medicine Bow National Forest. Someone commented that this guy had similarities to the "biggest a--hole in the world" Cristina met at her campsite a few months ago, but Cristina wasn't there to verify the comparison.

Orienteering race (One-Man Relay) 1:23:22 [3] 4.08 mi (20:26 / mi) +810ft 17:12 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Saucony Grid Omni TR

One-Man Relay. I think this was the most fun event of the week. I hope I didn't annoy too many people by taking photos of them on the course.

Orienteering (Green course) 1:39:10 [3] 4.0 mi (24:48 / mi) +771ft 20:58 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Saucony Grid Omni TR

Green training course. Again, mostly walking.

I wandered at #11. I can't remember if I intended to go around the knoll between 8 and 9, or if I unintentionally veered off my bearing.

Orienteering race (Green course) 1:35:48 [3] 4.43 mi (21:38 / mi)
slept:6.0 shoes: Saucony Grid Omni TR

First day of "Laramie Daze". Fun! I walked 85% of the course. I only had one big error, at #9, and I zig-zagged, which is better than wandering or circling...
