2018 LoCOfit Adventure Run in the Arkansas Hills trail system just outside of Salida. 3:43:23 total time, 3:06:53 moving time.

It was a beautiful, clear, sunny day -- t-shirt weather -- and I love this kind of desert-y, rocky terrain. We had a smaller group this year (10 vs. 15), but it was still fun. I had planned to do just 10 miles but ended up doing 13+ with maybe 20% walking mixed in along the way (I gave myself permission to walk uphill whenever the ultra-runners walked!).

Our VRBO house for the night after the run was just one block away from the cool downtown area of Salida (and Amica's pizza!), with a huge picture-window view of the trail area where we had been running.

I slept on the sofa and didn't sleep very well...and my foot & achilles are hurting again, big time. But it's more of a dull ache this time, not the sharp pain I had in recent weeks. Time for more icing and rest...and maybe I should buy some actual trail-running shoes.

Note

Today was all work & Adventure Run trip prep (laundry / packing, picking up door prizes, and making finisher treat bags x 12) -- no time for a walk or bike ride.

Really crappy sleep for the past few days...

Final LoCOfit group workout of the year... :-(

Just an easy group run, out and back from Founder's Park in Superior. Sam wanted to pair up, so I did a run / walk combo with her.

Weekly Runner's Roost group run, with a post-run BBQ. There was a great beer selection -- Crystal Springs Blood Orange Kolsch and Rogue Marionberry Sour Ale were my favorites.

I'm not sure how or why...but my foot is now feeling completely back to normal. I guess I'll just be happy and not question it.

I did today's LoCOfit workout by myself a bit early, since I had dinner plans.

- Ran one mile from home up to Harper Lake to warm up.

- 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1 minutes of fast effort with two minutes of walking recovery in between.

- Ran back home to cool down.

I guess Rifle's residents aren't really into running...? Or were they all hung over from last night's Western Adventure Weekend festivities?

In any case, this 5K race had a grand total of NINE participants. I think there were more cops blocking roads along the course than there were runners.

The entire second mile was uphill -- oof. But that's where I passed the other female runner. She gained on me near the end, but I kept the lead.

Since this was an "adventure run", finishing at the fairgrounds, we had to do some fun / silly extra stuff at the end: two laps up and down the grandstand stairs, some zig-zags around the barrel-racing barrels, and a final sprint through a long stable into the finish chute. :-)

I entered this event because my foot pain had been gradually improving last week, and I figured a 5K wouldn't be too intense. After an unexplained resurgence of pain on Friday, my foot didn't hurt during the race, and now (on Monday) it isn't hurting at all. Weird! Maybe running on it popped something back into place...?

Argentine Railroad Grade Trail.

I had never heard of this trail before, but someone posted pics on the "303 Trail Monitor" page last week, and it looked really pretty.

Since the trailhead was just off the I-70 Silver Plume exit and I thought it would be "easy", I decided to stop on my way home from Rifle. After seeing everyone else's pretty aspen pics lately, I wanted to see some fall color up close for myself!

My legs (and butt) were pretty sore from yesterday's ride, but the trail had a very gentle grade.

It was beautiful, but I could hear the roar of I-70 traffic most of the time. I could also hear the Georgetown loop railroad's engine & whistle, and that was cool.

The entire loop would have been too much for me, so I just did an out-and-back, up-and-down ride to Pavilion Point (~10,000').

I had a strong headache by the time I finished -- altitude? dehydration? lack of sleep? caffeine withdrawal? I drank some water and napped in my car for 45 minutes, and that helped. Then I plowed back into the I-70 traffic for another hour+ of driving to get home...

Overall, an exhausting but very fun weekend.
