Orienteering race (Red Middle) 47:05 [3] 3.69 mi (12:46 / mi) +68ft 12:33 / mi
slept:4.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

I only got a few hours of sleep (due to having "real" coffee yesterday morning?) -- I tossed, tuned, ruminated, cried for a while (last year's Flying Pig meet was the last orienteering trip Troy and I took together), etc. So I was worried my exhausted brain fog might affect my run. After I sat at a red light for a while waiting to turn right (with no other traffic coming), on my way to VOA Park, I knew I wasn't 100% mentally sharp... :-P

VERY cold at the start -- but I resisted the urge to wear my windbreaker on the course this time. Fingers were painfully cold for the first few controls, but I was ultimately very glad I didn't have my jacket on.

The rough open / green-line areas were pretty nasty to get through, so I used the paths and mowed rides as often as possible, e.g. to #1 (the ride isn't really visible in this image, but it explains my curvy route).

Is there such a thing as a 90-degree error? That seems to be what I did leaving #6. ARGH! So dumb. Not even sure how I did that. :-\

For #7, I thought the bend in the trail would be a good attack point, but the woods were thick & nasty as soon as I left the trail; people who approached #7 from the east (e.g. Tonia) seemed to have an easier & faster time getting to it.

It would have been fun to hang out afterwards, but I had to get back to my hotel to check out, etc...

Orienteering race 1:08:56 [3] 5.88 mi (11:43 / mi) +362ft 11:05 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

Red classic-distance course at Elk Creek in Middletown, OH.

I feel like this was my cleanest race of the weekend -- although the navigation was pretty easy (Orange-ish). Looking at my tracks, I left #2 in a weird direction and I overshot #9 a bit. Also, the trail to #17 looked good on paper, but it was VERY muddy and slippery -- slow going, and it probably would've been better to just run along the paved path & open yellow area east of it, since the control was close to the vegetation boundary.

Very cold at the start (I wore my windbreaker on the course and of course regretted it after just a few minutes), but otherwise a pretty, sunny, fun day.

Orienteering race (Red Middle) 1:03:21 [3] 3.29 mi (19:15 / mi) +564ft 16:34 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

Red middle-distance course at Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park in Hamilton, OH.

Lost time at #1 (headed into the woods too soon; slowed way down before I got totally lost), #3 (very tentative on the steep embankment at stream crossing and then fighting through thick woods; I should have headed to the yellow area sooner), and #4 (bizarre brain failure on the easy / obvious route choice). Small errors leaving #9 & #12 in a dumb / inefficient direction. Got very disoriented and stood still for a while on my way to #14 (it took me a minute to realize the Stonehenge-like sculptures were mapped as boulders rather than black X's like all the other sculptures -- although I guess that makes sense).

Cold & overcast but pleasant enough once running -- it didn't start to rain / snow until I was back at my hotel. Going through all the sculpture areas as part of the course was fun.

I didn't eat much yesterday or today, so dinner ended up being PF Chang's takeout (kung pao shrimp) since I had a gift card to use, TWO beers (local Mad Tree kölsch, which tasted GREAT with the spicy food), chile-lime kettle chips, and a few spoonfuls of Brown Butter Bourbon Truffle ice cream from Kroger (luckily it didn't taste nearly as good as the name led me to believe, and it didn't stay frozen in the hotel room fridge, so I didn't eat much of it).

I dragged my laptop AND a portable monitor to Cincinnati, with the intent of working for a half day this morning (to preserve some vacation time) and then doing lots of long-overdue RMOC catch-up work over the weekend. But then my laptop crashed / failed this morning ("corrupt boot sector"). $%&@(%^~!!! So I got a bare minimum of RMOC stuff done on the crappy, locked-down hotel computer.

My training plan assignment was "easy four miles" -- but that was written when I was planning to race on Sunday (rather than Friday, Saturday AND Sunday), and I still need to pack and get to the airport this afternoon...

So I just did an easy loop out to Daughenbaugh and back.
