Orienteering race 40:48 [3] 1.85 mi (22:03 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

GPHXO Sprint #1 at Needle Vista.

I got off to a bad start and totally blew it on #1 -- luckily Cristina came through and saved the day (by letting me follow her). :-P

Orienteering race 34:16 [3] 1.53 mi (22:24 / mi) +97ft 21:08 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

GPHXO Sprint #2 at Needle Vista.

I'm hesitant to even post these tracks, since I had so many DUMB errors...(never found #4; WTH was I thinking from #7 to #8; etc).

7 PM

Orienteering race (Night-O) 1:57:19 [3] 3.84 mi (30:33 / mi) +608ft 26:34 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

Two-hour Night-Score-O at Needle Vista.

For the first few controls, I felt like I was moving fast enough to clear the course. But then I hit the kind of steep, loose, rocky downhill terrain that slows me down to an overly-tentative crawl. Then I spent 30 minutes looking for #7 (never found it). I also didn't go far enough to reach the saddle I had planned to use in between #10 and #11, so I did a lot of unnecessary up / down in that area.

It was an enjoyable course and a very pleasant night -- slightly chilly but fine once moving. Also, I saw big owl swooping around at one point.

Orienteering 2:09:11 [3] 4.45 mi (29:02 / mi) +291ft 27:20 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

Another training day, at Catalina State Park.

I arrived a bit late after packing up at our Airbnb place, so I only did part of the course. Also, I was hoping to intercept Mary Jo and Clark along the way (just to say hello), so I did the course backwards.

I think I mostly did OK (much easier at walking speed!), except for a segment of "distracted orienteering" at #6-5-4 (I was reading and sending texts during those legs). :-P I never found #4 (tracks indicate I didn't go far enough), but I continued on so that I would have time to get to the Tohono Chul gardens.

Orienteering 53:28 [3] 3.46 mi (15:27 / mi) +39ft 15:17 / mi
slept:3.5 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2017)

Another fun day. Still chilly, but clear & sunny.

Corridor & Sprint training course at the University of Arizona campus map. I back-tracked a few times at the very beginning as I got used to the map scale. And then I had to back-track again for #12 -- but now I know what the tunnel / underpass symbol is. :-)

2 PM

Orienteering 1:55:32 [3] 2.56 mi (45:08 / mi) +29ft 44:39 / mi
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2017)

Walked the training course with local guy Clark (he's brushing up on his map & compass skills prior to a trip next week to the Mojave Desert).

I want to get better at beginner instruction & explaining things, so this was helpful to me.

Orienteering race 1:59:00 [3] 4.76 mi (25:00 / mi) +1052ft 20:40 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2017)

Street-O in Bisbee, AZ. Despite stopping for lots of photos and having the world's most inefficient route...I got all but two of the 21 controls.

Lunch & meandering with Cristina, Melissa & Lukas afterwards.

Run / Hike 33:32 [3] 1.42 mi (23:37 / mi) +309ft 19:35 / mi

Hiked up to the start. Got totally lost (unmapped trail?), but Jeff Coker yelled over to me to get me back on track...

2 PM

Corridor / regular course training at Cat Mountain. Problems at #5 and #7. Also, I never found #14 -- found the start instead.

Fun course / beautiful area!

Run / Hike warm up/down 12:15 [3] 0.94 mi (13:02 / mi) +77ft 12:05 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

Walk / jog to the start.

Orienteering race (THOMASS / training) 44:59 [3] 2.91 mi (15:28 / mi) +272ft 14:12 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

Very fun THOMASS-style training event at Catalina State Park. I used trails whenever I could, even when it was slightly longer. Also, went wide around green areas that I assumed would be dense cactus (e.g. from F to G). The sun was finally out, but it was windy.

Orienteering race (Red course) 2:04:13 [3] 6.59 mi (18:51 / mi) +1040ft 16:24 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

This was longer and much more technical than yesterday's course. I really enjoyed it.

I had one big error on the super-long leg to #8. Across more than a mile, I was following my plan (running along the ridge) -- but then at the very end I ran down the wrong spur and turned off too soon into the wrong dry stream -- DOH! I even saw a mapped water tank and couldn't make sense of it -- just continued to plow on in the wrong direction. I finally hit a fence and figured it out. :-P

I took the long way around spurs a few times, to avoid extra up-down.

I liked this course a lot.
