Cycling 1:33:49 [3] 16.42 mi (5:43 / mi) +738ft 5:29 / mi
slept:8.0 weight:110.5lbs shoes: Safire

After waffling too long this morning about whether to ride or run, I finally got ready to ride (sunscreen, bike clothes, etc.) and realized it was already pretty hot. So I decided to do stuff around the house until it cooled off in the afternoon.

Got some stuff done at home...and when I was ready to leave again at about 4:45 pm, it looked like the sky was about to open up. Hmm. But luckily it was just blustery and it blew over without any of the rain / hail / lightning that looked imminent.

From home: one loop around the arboretum, powerline bike path, Coal Creek trail, Mayhoffer-Singletree trail, Cowdrey Draw, and Community Ditch out to Hwy 93. And then back the same way, except for the arboretum loop.

- Sent reminder emails for 9/30 membership expirations.

- Data entry for new memberships & annual waivers collected at yesterday's meet.

- Data entry for phone number & vehicle updates collected at yesterday's meet. Also, added a new field for Vehicle in the rmoc_member table (for members who don't have an entry in the rmoc_waiver table), rather than using the Phone2 field as a workaround; updated the PHP / SQL query that pulls runner details for start cards.

- Confirmed Tahosa volunteer list w/ Doug & Michael; data entry for results page.

- Sent two invoices for Tahosa meet.

- Miscellaneous email follow-ups.

Orienteering race (Red course) 2:17:53 [3] 5.53 mi (24:56 / mi) +935ft 21:30 / mi
slept:8.0

I helped with registration today and got a late start (very close to the end of the start window). Also, I struggled with two of the early controls. At the 4pm course closure time, I was on my way to #11 (out of 20); looking at the course, I knew it would take me *at least* another hour to finish. I felt physically able to continue on, but I assumed control pickup would already be in progress.

For context -- Graham took a little over two hours to finish the course; Rich Kelly, Neal & Galen all took three+ hours.

It was a beautiful area, though, with some aspens starting to turn...I'm looking forward to going back again next year on a more reasonable course.

Right kneecap (tendonitis?) didn't start bothering me until a few miles in. Left ankle had two minor tweaking incidents and one BIG twist (crumple to the ground, silent scream, roll around in the grass for a few minutes holding my foot, etc.). It was painful and I was very worried about it on the way home, but it feels semi-OK today (Sunday).

Orienteering race (Goat course) 2:41:53 [3] 8.08 mi (20:02 / mi) +906ft 18:07 / mi
slept:7.0 weight:109lbs shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

Laramie Labor Daze #4 -- Rocky Mountain Goat

Pro tip: When there's a 250-meter, uphill walk to the start, be sure to bring along your compass. And when you realize you've forgotten your compass, try to do that more than 60 seconds before the mass start.

So, this got off to a bad start. I was very frazzled for #1-2-3-4, and it shows in my tracks and colossally dumb mistakes at #2 and #4.

From #5 onward I did OK, but I was too far behind everyone at that point for it to make a difference. Besides the few people I passed on the way to #1-2-3, I didn't see anyone for almost this entire course -- so I obviously missed out on the advantage of pack-running that everyone else had.

Also, while my left ankle was mostly OK today (only a few wincing moments), my right kneecap was VERY painful -- something I've never experienced before -- and I could mostly only walk. (Tori and others suggested this could be an IT band issue...)

I still enjoyed the course and the weekend overall, and did not want to go home afterwards -- the sad "day after Christmas" feeling.
