I met b0be in Boulder after work, to hand over some controls I fixed-up last week (re-tie, add number tags, attach punches, etc.). Since there was still some daylight left, I headed to Chautauqua Park to jog on the Mesa Trail.
I've jogged on the southern segment of the Mesa Trail (on our Devil's Thumb map) a zillion times. But, after living in Boulder for ten years, I had never tried the northern portion. (It starts at Chautauqua and goes all the way to Eldorado, which I think is about eight miles each way.)
This trail is fantastic. It's mostly open forest, but there was great fall color along the drainages.
Since it was late in the day and I was alone, I should have paid more attention to the trailhead notices about recent bear activity. Just after my turnaround point, I spotted one... He was about 50 or 100m away, on the other side of a reentrant. My pace dropped off substantially after that, since I was stopping every ten paces or so to look over my shoulder.
I also got lost and ended up in a residential area for the last half-mile or so. But, it's a residential area with multi-million-dollar homes...not bad. It was totally dark at that point and the road / trail was uneven, so I just walked the last bit.
