Cycling 1:00:46 [3] 10.02 mi (6:04 / mi) +309ft 5:54 / mi
slept:9.0 weight:108.6lbs shoes: Safire

MTB ride from home -- loops around Harper Lake, Davidson Mesa, and the arboretum. It was sunny but COLD (30s), and this kinda sucked -- couldn't feel my fingers or toes by the end. I forced myself to ride for an hour.

I'm kinda dreading the 5k race I'm signed up for on Monday -- temp at the start is predicted to be 24°F -- ugh.

slept:10.0 weight:109.3lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2017)

Neighborhood run -- arboretum loop, ditch trail, Daughenbaugh / Warembourg, Dutch Creek, and then back home. It's a good thing I slept 'til about 11 am and missed this morning's 50 mph wind gusts; by the time I got out, it was sunny, calm, and 60s -- very nice.

Run / Hike warm up/down 7:35 [3] 0.39 mi (19:26 / mi)

Note
slept:3.0

Got to bed at 2:30 am this morning, and I was still awake at 3:30 am. So...I slept as late as possible (6:30 am) and did not get in a run before going to the airport. C'est la vie.

Strength / Stretching 30:00 [3]
slept:6.0 weight:109.5lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2017)

I missed the first half of class, but better late than never! (After a frantic day of work, gift prep, errands, a post office run, etc.) Luckily the workout was something easy to jump into even though the class was halfway over.

8 PM

Strength / Stretching 1:00:00 [3]

Restorative yoga class with quiet, instrumental Christmas music -- my first hour of non-frantic calm in about two weeks.

And...now I'm back home in frantic mode, finishing laundry and packing for my trip. Aspirational goal: an early morning run before heading to the airport tomorrow?!

Run / Hike 41:46 [3] 4.07 mi (10:16 / mi) +199ft 9:48 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2017)

Roost run -- Christmas lights route. I had to run much faster than I wanted to, b/c I arrived late (thank you Verizon customer service...) and missed the group. I didn't know the route so I at least had to catch the tail end of them! Nice, mild weather (~60 degrees) -- high tomorrow is expected to be in the low 20s. Post-run food selection was so-so -- which is a good thing, b/c I don't need to eat a bunch of junk before my fried-food fiesta next week. :-P

Strength / Stretching 1:00:00 [3]
slept:8.0 weight:112lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2017)

I finally got a full eight hours sleep, for the first time in about two weeks. Unfortunately, those eight hours were from 5am this morning (when I FINALLY wrapped up all the work I needed to finish before taking vacation through 1/1/2018) until 1pm -- ay caramba. I missed the best part of today's nice weather, but I hope to reset my schedule starting tonight.

Strength Training for Runners class -- a tough one with lots of jumping & squats. I expect to be in pain again tomorrow. :-P

Run / Hike 27:40 [3] 1.59 mi (17:24 / mi) +96ft 16:27 / mi
slept:3.0 weight:112lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2017)

Still totally overwhelmed with work -- worked late Friday night, most of the weekend, and today (my first day of "vacation"). Ugh -- I feel like a total slug from doing nothing but sit on my butt in front of a computer for 10+ hours per day lately.

I went for a neighborhood walk tonight, since it was too late to get to Becky's yoga class after my Costco run ("run" as in errand, not an actual run). :-\

Run / Hike 41:38 [3] 3.87 mi (10:45 / mi) +204ft 10:15 / mi

Runner's Roost group run -- from the store, up McCaslin to Davidson Mesa, southwest on the mesa trail out to the Hwy 36 bike path, and then back to the store. Birthday cake and beer afterwards...yum.

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did -- "Belgian-Style White Ale with Passionfruit".

GPHXO Two-Hour Score-O @ Saguaro Lake

Another fun day. Unlike last night, when I could run most of the time on trails, there were no trails on this map. Also, the footing was loose & rocky, especially on the steep downhill sections, and I'm ridiculously slow and tentative in that kind of terrain.

So, the loop I picked may not have been ideal, considering how slow I was ultimately moving. Also, I ran out of time to get the last 50-point control I had planned for near the end (#51), and there wasn't else anything for me to pick up along the mile+ road-run on the way back to the finish. I really had to push my pace for that last mile -- didn't want to go over the time limit again. I was SO happy to come around a bend in the road and see the finish area -- with about a minute to spare. :-P

I wish this event had had a four-hour option -- I was enjoying the course and I could have picked up a lot more controls!

Orienteering race 2:00:45 [3] 6.41 mi (18:50 / mi) +612ft 17:17 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

GPHXO Two-Hour Night-Score-O @ Coon Bluff in Phoenix.

The best route was pretty obvious, and the controls were all very close to trails or washes.

So I should have been able to clean the course -- but I was very much thrown off by the scale. I didn't realize it was not actually 1:10,000 (as printed on the map) until long after I had blown past #30. I thought it was too far to go back for, but in retrospect I totally should have done that.

I tried to get it at the end, sprinting a LONG way out and back from the start / finish area at a really uncomfortable pace, but I didn't find it (even though my tracks show I was right on top of it at one point) and got back 45 seconds late. DOH!

But -- VERY fun overall. (I measured later, and the scale was more like 1:8,000.)

Orienteering race (Red) 1:11:03 [3] 3.52 mi (20:11 / mi) +404ft 18:12 / mi
slept:5.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

Another night (last night) of terrible sleep. After tossing and turning for a while, I flipped around and put my head at the foot of the bed, so I'd be just a bit farther away from the noisy window. Still with headache and stomach issues today, too. Ugh.

----------

The thickness of the brush for #1 - #5 was kinda unbelievable -- very difficult to move through and see through. I was hunched over swatting branches out of my face most of the time.

After yesterday's disasters, I tried to be extra careful -- but, that plus the thick veg meant I was also extra SLOW.

I found #1 - #4 OK, but got a little lost around #5 (I saw the clearing ahead and thought I had gone too far so I turned back -- in fact I was probably very close). JP found it while I was nearby, so that was helpful...

After #6, the rest of the course was very open and fast and I enjoyed it a lot (much like a park Sprint course). But I was still near the bottom of the Red results. Oh well -- it was still fun overall.

Orienteering race (Red) 1:51:47 [3] 4.04 mi (27:40 / mi) +609ft 24:13 / mi
slept:4.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

Really awful sleep last night -- my Airbnb this time kinda sucks (it faces a busy four-lane road that's VERY noisy throughout the night -- and the bed is right up against a crappy single-pane window facing the road).

Maybe that's why I had a 16-minute leg (#9) and a 23-minute leg (#14) today. Or maybe I was just orienteering really poorly. In both cases, I lost contact with the map and was totally lost. "Failing to plan is planning to fail" -- or however that expression goes. After the #14 debacle, I decided to mostly just walk to save my legs for the next day.

I also lost a few minutes trying to disentangle my shoe from barbed wire on the ground near #3 (I finally just ripped it out), but those few minutes were insignificant compared to the disasters at #9 and #14.

Sharon looked at my splits afterwards and asked me, "Did you take a nap out there?" ;-)

I think I have a (new) bug of some sort -- splitting headache at night and intermittent but severe GI troubles during the day & night.

Orienteering race (Red course) 51:43 [3] 3.41 mi (15:10 / mi) +622ft 12:56 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

OINK Day 1 -- Red course (I upgraded to Red since these middle-distance courses are short).

I never got as lost as I did at a few of the QOC US Champs controls, but I did hesitate and slow down a lot a few times. Also, my tracks look very inefficient from the start to #1. In retrospect (from my literal armchair), I think it would have been faster for me to go the long way around to #8 (using the short little trail through the finger of woods), rather than fighting my way through the thorny woods. And I guess I could have also used that little trail to go from #2 to #3, and then run along the edge of the clearing. It seems so obvious now...

I took trails as much as possible for 9 - 10 - 11. I saw the other F21+ runner leaving 15 in a strange direction, so thankfully I paused to read the map there and didn't get caught by the fence trap...

Nice, sunny weather, and a surprisingly fun & challenging course for such a small area.

Note

I still have an occasional cough and some throat-sludge...but I think I can turn off the AP "sick" flag as of today. Yay!
