Strength / Stretching (CrossFit) 55:00 [3]
slept:7.0 shoes: Saucony Grid Omni TR

  • Jump-rope to warm up: two minutes of singles / 30 seconds rest / one minute of double-unders / 30 seconds rest / one minute of double-unders.

  • Dynamic stretching, range-of-motion stuff, 10 squats and a few plank exercises to warm up.

  • Three sets:

    - clapping push-ups x 5 (modified)
    - kipping pull-ups x 5
    - wall-to-wall jog / skip / shuffle

  • For time -- 21-18-15-12-9-6 reps of:

    - 30# goblet squats (prescribed weight for women was 35#)
    - push-ups (I did modified push-ups...)
    - ab-mat sit-ups

    14:24

I really feel like crap at these workouts lately -- blah and not real motivated to try hard. I think one contributing factor is my AWFUL diet during the work-week (and, often, on the weekend, too). After this workout, I stocked up on:

    - a tub of sliced fruit (I know this is lazy, but I *am* lazy when it comes to food prep & packing a lunch).
    - three two-packs of Fruit2day (one pack of each flavor -- they all look good).
    - a tub of fresh pomegranate seeds (yum!).
    - olives and roasted garlic (a salty snack that isn't potato chips).
    - sweet potatoes, sweet onion and green apple to roast with a maple glaze for dinner and lunch leftovers.

    Orienteering race (Red course) 1:25:00 [3] 4.82 mi (17:38 / mi) +968ft 14:49 / mi
slept:7.0 weight:127lbs shoes: Saucony ProGrid Guide TR

After thinking about what I did wrong yesterday, I decided I needed to focus more on being very careful to stay on my bearing (by sighting distinct features in the distance), aiming off, and carefully ticking off washes as I crossed them.

    - I forgot the aiming-off thing as I headed to #1... Had to wander back and forth when I hit the wash.

    - I looked right at the boulder at #7 from a few feet above. I could see around most of it, but could not see the flag tucked right beneath it... Wandered upstream a bit before I saw Peg moving towards it.

    - I planned to aim off a bit on my way to #13, but not quite THAT much. Thank goodness I happened to hit #14 and figured out how far off I was (and where I was); otherwise, a major disaster would have ensued. ;-)

    - A better route choice to #16 would have been to take the northern trail to where it intersected with the wash, rather than taking the southern trail and having to guess at where I'd cut down into the wash (Troy pointed that out to me later).

Both days were a blast. I wish we could have stayed longer for more desert orienteering. Hopefully there will be another multi-day meet there in 2011.

    Orienteering race (Red) 1:46:35 [3] 6.0 mi (17:46 / mi) +344ft 16:51 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Saucony ProGrid Guide TR

Day 1 Red course at Ironwood. I overshot a few controls but I didn't ever get too horribly lost (a la Anza-Borrego). The course was nice and flat, and I only had one really bad cholla encounter. Fun overall!

    Updating with tracks:

    - Not being familiar with the map yet, I was looking for a much more distinct reentrant at #2. It appears that I passed right by it before circling back.

    - Can't remember exactly what went wrong at #4...

    - I was counting on the trail to stop me on my way to #6, but I never saw the trail. Luckily I turned back before I went too far beyond it.

    - I stopped to disentangle my ankle from a cholla on my way to #11. When I looked up, Eric Bone was leaving the control. I had no idea I had made a perfect beeline for it... I certainly wouldn't have expected that on such a long leg.

    - Got off my bearing and didn't feel too confident going into #13. Found it after a bit of very careful walking around and map/feature matching.

  • Jump-rope, dynamic stretching, range of motion exercises, modified push-ups & 10 squats to warm up.

  • Warm-up with 15 or so reps on three-position power clean. 35#, 55#, 65#.

  • For time:

    - power clean x 5 (55#)

    - kipping pull-ups x 10 (I substituted some jumping pull-ups in the first few sets)
    - 60 seconds rest

    Orienteering race (Borrego (long course)) 3:11:24 [3] 6.93 mi (27:37 / mi) +1791ft 22:11 / mi
slept:9.0 shoes: Saucony ProGrid Guide TR

"Borrego" -- goat-style long course. I should have opted for the shorter "Lamb" course.

I did OK on #1 - #4, but then I overshot #5. I couldn't make heads or tails of where I was, so I decided #5 would be the control I skipped. Unfortunately, since I had no idea where I was, I overshot my planned attackpoint for #6 by a ridiculous amount (i.e., off the map).

Did OK on #7 - #11 (except for the scary-steep descent down to #10, most of which I did by sliding on my butt while Peg Davis motored past me...). When I checked the clock at #11, I realized it would be impossible to finish by the noon cut-off. So I headed back and picked up #17 and #18 on the way, with the Fluegels for company at times.

    Orienteering race (Red) 2:12:41 [3] 5.95 mi (22:18 / mi) +627ft 20:17 / mi
slept:9.0 shoes: Saucony ProGrid Guide TR

I wasted a lot of time looking for a control that was missing. Had a few other mistakes. But it was another great weather day and I was happy that at least I finished (unlike yesterday...)

Update: Here are the tracks. Looks like I went directly to #3 (the missing control). DOH! I should have trusted myself and the other people who were there, rather than wasting so much time looking for it...

I'm not sure how I missed #5; I should have tripped over it. And then I *really* screwed up #6. I got lucky there when someone pointed me back in the right direction.

    2 PM

    Run / Hike warm up/down 30:00 [3] 0.86 mi (34:53 / mi)

Walking to the start of the Maze-O.

    Orienteering race (Maze) 1:12:10 [3] 2.11 mi (34:12 / mi) +571ft 27:13 / mi
    shoes: Saucony ProGrid Guide TR

Maze-O medium course (find any 6 of 9 controls). With all the steep, crumbly cliffs and narrow slot canyons, I'm surprised no one has ever been hurt at this event... It's kinda scary.

Update: Here are the tracks. I overshot #109, but then I got used to the 1:5,000 scale. One other issue was not being brave enough to jump over a "crevasse" to get directly to #101. It wasn't a long hop at all, but the other side was steep, crumbly dirt. I saw a few people jump it, while a few walked around the long way like I did.

After my last control, I was afraid the chute down to the main canyon was too steep (I couldn't see the bottom). I followed a different canyon for quite a ways in order to get to the main slot, until a point where I couldn't see what awaited me if I dropped down even deeper (could see light, but not much else). It was a situation where I'd either crawl through and pop out into the main slot, or I'd be trapped with no way to get back up to where I'd come from. I decided to play it safe, so I had to back-track all the way to my last control -- and then I took the chute I was initially afraid to use. It was no problem. Jeez...

    Orienteering race (Red) 2:38:35 [3] 5.8 mi (27:21 / mi) +1033ft 23:24 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Saucony ProGrid Guide TR

I think vmeyer will get a good laugh out of my GPS tracks when I post them next week...

Long story short -- I never found #6, and I was somewhere in the vicinity of #8 by the time I had even the vaguest idea of where I might be on the map. So I DNF'd... (Troy's split on #6 was 1:06:21, for context.)

    Weather was perfect, at least.

Update: OK, here are the tracks. Sigh... I really liked the leg from #3 to #4 where I was corralled in a slot canyon the whole way. Hard to go wrong there.

    Strength / Stretching (CrossFit) 50:00 [3]
slept:8.0 weight:124lbs shoes: Saucony Grid Omni TR

  • Jump-rope & dynamic warm-up.

  • Burgener warm-up & some reps to warm up on hang squat clean (10-8-8-5-5). Max weight was 65#.

  • For time: 21-15-9 of hang squat clean (50#) / ring dips (I substituted bench dips since there weren't enough rings). 8:25.

  • Saturday Jan 9, 2010 #

    Orienteering race (Snowshoe-Medium) 1:45:16 [3] 4.3 mi (24:29 / mi)
    slept:8.0 weight:124lbs

    Snowshoe-O at Eldora.

Things were going OK until I decided to go directly from #8 to #10. Sigh... I have DNF'd on occasion, but I haven't accidentally skipped a control since APOC 2002. When Troy mentioned last year that not having a punch card makes this kind of mistake more likely, I thought that was silly. But I'm sure a punch card would have helped me catch my error today. Of course, I still prefer e-punching, all things considered.

Shovelling snow and hacking at the 2" layer of ice underneath since I didn't shovel last time...

slept:6.0 weight:121lbs shoes: Saucony ProGrid Guide TR

  • Miscellaneous stretching and warm-up stuff.

  • Lots of reps to warm up on clean and jerk movements.

  • "Grace" workout, for time: 65# clean and jerk x 30. 8:05. I was not only the slowest in the 5:30 pm class, but also the second slowest of everyone in all the classes today. :-P Women's prescribed weight was 85#.

    Strength / Stretching (CrossFit) 1:00:00 [3]
    slept:8.0

  • Warm-up:

    - jump-rope
    - dynamic stretching and range-of-motion stuff
    - pull-ups x 10 / push-ups x 10 / sit-ups x 10 / good mornings x 10 / squats x 10

  • "Angie" workout, for time:

    - kipping pull-ups x 1001 (14:56)
    - push-ups x 1002 (9:22)
    - abmat sit-ups x 100 (6:20)
    - squats x 100 (3:36)

    34:14

1The first 18 were unassisted; I used the red band on the remaining ones.
2The first 25 were legit; I did the rest on my knees.

My strength (or lack thereof) limits how much of a cardio/aerobic workout this is, so I didn't feel sick or anything afterwards. But I know I'm going to sit at my desk all day tomorrow and seize-up into a knot of painful head-to-toe soreness...
