Orienteering race (Sprint) 40:35 [3] 2.33 mi (17:25 / mi) +663ft 13:43 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Vasque Adrenaline

Long Sprint course in Los Alamos, NM. I went to the wrong rock on my way to #8, but otherwise I thought this was pretty easy. I beat Sharon by six seconds. Wow!

We drove home via Taos and stopped at a really great Mexican place there -- Orlando's New Mexican Café.

Orienteering race (4-Hour Course) 3:59:24 [3] 6.17 mi (38:48 / mi) +1791ft 30:26 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Vasque Adrenaline

Four-hour mini-rogaine in Los Alamos, NM. All the downed trees were kind of a drag to climb over constantly, but overall it was great fun. I had some errors here and there, nothing too disastrous. Troy won overall, and Sharon Crawford came in second overall.

For dinner, the Opsahls hosted a potluck with great lasagna and a veggie pasta dish. Plamen's wife made a fantastic cherry pie.

Soccer intervals (indoor) 30:00 [3]
slept:8.0 weight:128lbs

Indoor soccer. We lost 8-4.

Orienteering race (Sprints) 2:23:44 [3] 7.29 mi (19:43 / mi) +705ft 18:04 / mi
slept:4.0

Three Sprint courses at Plamen's new Chatfield South map.

This is not my favorite area -- I don't like getting muddy and wet from nasty, stagnant water up to my knees.

But, Plamen does a great job mapping and setting courses.

I walked a lot and had errors on all three courses. Oh well.

I rode the "Dirty Bismarck" loop from my house. (J-J will probably recognize that reference...)

It's a mostly-trail version of the Morgul-Bismark road loop, and I think I did it in the opposite direction: (home to bike path to Coal Creek Trail to) Singletree Trail to Marshall Rd to 66th St to Cowdrey Draw Trail to Community Ditch Trail to Greenbelt Plateau Trail to High Plains Trail to Coalton Trail to McCaslin Rd (back to Coal Creek Trail and home).

It's 99% non-technical. I attempted the one technical section and failed in a semi-spectacular fashion (keeling over sideways and backwards and scraping my leg...). There are several variations that could add either a little or a lot of additional mileage. There are also plans to add the final trail connector sometime in 2009, so that it's 100% trail (avoiding the road stretch between Singletree and Cowdrey Draw).

It was super fun! But now I'm going to be late to the baby shower I have to attend this afternoon...and I've probably trashed my legs for tomorrow's three Sprints at Chatfield.

Cycling tempo 35:00 [3] 6.68 mi (5:14 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:124lbs

Bike to work.

I finally tried another route I've had my eye on for a while -- a connector from StorageTek's jogging trail, to an underpass, to the FlatIrons Mall bike path.

I've always assumed I'd have to hop a fence and carry my bike for about 50 feet. But, it turns out the fence is gone in that spot, and a small social trail has already appeared.

I liked this option, because it helps me avoid the two long lights at Northwest Parkway and Industrial Lane. But, then I got snarled up at multiple intersections in the shopping center. I need to find a more efficient route through or around the shopping center.

Cycling tempo 36:53 [3] 6.94 mi (5:19 / mi)

Bike home from work. I sorted out the best route through the shopping center, with just one wrong turn in the process.

The route has one short, very steep hill (on dirt), and a longer moderate hill on gravel. It'll be fun going down these sections in the morning, and I'll try to use the same route on the way home (for a tougher workout) if there's enough light. (These sections aren't along roads, so there aren't any street lights.)

Note

I'm heading out to see The Order of Myths in Denver, a film by one of my high school friends.

Soccer intervals (indoor) 33:00 [3]
slept:8.0 weight:124lbs

I took the last session off, but now indoor soccer has started up again.

I got updates on some of the interpersonal drama I missed during the last season, and we came SO close to winning. But, we ending up losing 7-6. I expected to be sucking wind, since I haven't been running much (at all) lately; but, I felt fine. Maybe my bike-commutes make up for lack of running.

I like the make-up of the team. I think this'll be a good season.

It's cold and rainy (snowing in the mountains), therefore I'm lazy and unmotivated.

I spent the whole day on long-overdue house chores. I finally got the last of the Laramie Daze / US Championship detritus out of my living room.

Cycling tempo 31:13 [3] 6.31 mi (4:57 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:124lbs

Bike to work. Where did this overcast, chilly weather come from? The forecast was for sunny and 70s all week, I thought...

Cycling tempo 18:36 [3] 3.11 mi (5:59 / mi)

Out to lunch and back. It's still chilly...

Cycling tempo 38:23 [3] 6.91 mi (5:33 / mi)

Bike home, with a stop for groceries (spinach & cheese manicotti again).

Cycling tempo 35:00 [3] 6.4 mi (5:28 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:124lbs

Bike to work -- with a stop to change a flat tire. Ugh. (On the bright side, it took me less than 30 minutes to change it... ;-)

Cycling tempo 41:43 [3] 7.27 mi (5:44 / mi)

Bike home, with a detour for groceries.

I've found the perfect one-item dinner. It doesn't mind getting squeezed into my backpack, it's reasonably tasty, and there are enough leftovers for lunch the next day: Bertolli Spinach & Ricotta Cheese Manicotti.

Note

...except that I just ate the whole thing, so there won't be any leftovers tomorrow...!

Orienteering race (Red course) 1:31:22 [3] *** 5.23 mi (17:28 / mi) +997ft 14:48 / mi
slept:8.0 weight:124lbs shoes: Vasque Adrenaline

I thought I did pretty well (for me), and I was looking forward to seeing some nice, purposeful lines in my GPS tracks. But, my ForeRunner data is spotty. I filled in the blanks manually (with purple).

I was happy that I didn't do any wandering; I had some small errors here and there (#9). I was only seven minutes behind Gøril (she beat me by ten minutes at Remarkable Flats). ;-)

We had a really big turnout for the meet, which was great.

Cycling tempo 39:14 [3] 6.72 mi (5:50 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:124lbs

Bike to work.

I decided to try a short-cut trail I've had my eye on for a while. I ended up having to climb over a gate and under a barbed-wire fence -- orienteering experience came in handy here. ;-) In the end, it wasn't much of a short cut time-wise or distance-wise.

Note

Very bizarre: Developmental Topographical Disorder -- the inability to orient in an environment.

Article (Poorly written, I think, because it's not very clear what the woman's exact problem is, which is simply that she's frequently lost even in familiar settings. That wasn't clear to me until I read through the web site below.)

Research Site (The section on "How We Orient" is interesting.)

Cycling tempo 59:19 [3] 9.71 mi (6:07 / mi)

Bike home, with one detour for a wrong turn, and another detour for dinner. It was pretty chilly by the time I finished dinner.

Cycling tempo 33:23 [2] 6.37 mi (5:14 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:126lbs

Bike to work.

Cycling 19:38 [2] 3.18 mi (6:10 / mi)

Out to lunch and back.

Cycling 40:17 [2] 6.98 mi (5:46 / mi)

I was hungry again within about 45 minutes of getting back from lunch... I caved in and got a Snickers in the afternoon, but I was *starving* and headache-y by the time I left the office at 9:15 pm.

Bike home with a detour for dinner supplies.

I managed to rig my headlamp on my helmet, but I'm not sure it added enough light to be worth the effort.
