I was disappointed to miss today's meet at Camp Alexander (on a brand-new map). But, Troy had to work, and when the alarm went off at 6:00 am this morning, I couldn't get excited about a ~five-hour round-trip drive by myself. So I went back to sleep. :-/

Cycling 20 [3] 16.7 mi (1 / mi) +879ft 1 / mi
shoes: Safire

MTB -- From home to Davidson Mesa, up and down a bit of the new Hwy 36 bikeway to find the new underpass to Marshall Road (not officially open yet, but rideable), south to 66th St, then along the Cowdrey Draw trail to Marshall Mesa and Greenbelt Plateau. I came back mostly the same way, except for taking the Singeltree Trail east instead of Marshall Road. Saw a coyote looking for dinner, the moon rise, and then the first bit of the eclipse before some clouds moved in.

MTB out-and-back at Hidden Mesa. We got a really late start, so we didn't have time to do the whole loop before dark.

Orienteering race (Red course) 1:48:32 [3] 5.4 mi (20:06 / mi) +712ft 17:52 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2014)

Red course at Peaceful Valley. I was lucky to not be affected by the mid-meet deranged-ranger course changes, since I started relatively early. :-P

Highlights:

* Found a deer skull with huge antlers on my way to #1. I carried it to #1 and then stashed it behind the utility boxes at the end of the nearby powerline. Retrieved it after I finished the course.

* Stopped to give directions on my way to #13, and got a little lost as a result (I probably would've gotten lost anyway, since I was looking for the junction of two very indistinct trails...).

* Had THE COOLEST MID-RACE ANIMAL SIGHTING EVER! as I neared #15: a mama bobcat and a bobcat kitten trotting across the trail. So cute (and rare).

This is a generic photo off the internet, but they looked like this (except that they were walking / trotting):

Worked on results for the Peaceful Valley meet. This was a gigantic pain, since I had to create a second set of courses & classes, figure out which version each person was on, etc.

Set-up for Peaceful Valley meet: create e-punch files, start cards, etc.

This took longer than it should have because, although I remembered to bring my laptop to Troy's house, I forgot the power cord. :-| So I had to install OE2010 on his PC (which meant lots of email searching to find the license number), recreate the mail merge doc for the start cards from scratch, etc. Ugh.

Cycling 1:41:02 [3] 10.55 mi (9:35 / mi) +702ft 9:01 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Rumor

FINALLY had a chance to ride the new mountain bike I got a month ago...!

We went to Hidden Mesa. Started at the Parker trailhead, up Pleasant Pass, two loops at the top, and then down Pleasant Pass.

Orienteering race (Blue course) 2:22:03 [3] 7.89 mi (18:00 / mi) +614ft 16:46 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2014)

LROC Rocky Mountain Goat course at Remarkable Flats.

I started a few minutes late (had to lock my car, adjust my hydration pack, etc.), but I was happy to pass a few people once I got into the course.

I crossed the wrong rocky ridge on my way to #6 and ended up too far left. Luckily, maprunner and Nelson were in the right area, and I spotted them.

I think I could have taken a more efficient route to #8, if I had run through the saddle west of my track.

Could have been more straight-line, with slightly less elevation gain, on the way to #16.

Otherwise, I am very happy with this run! Many thanks to Swampfox for setting up this training event.

Run / Hike race 1:59:48 [3] 10.18 mi (11:46 / mi) +528ft 11:13 / mi
slept:5.5 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2015)

I haven't been running more than once a week lately...and I got to bed at midnight after dinner (and wine) with some college friends yesterday. So I definitely did NOT want to get up at 5:30 am this morning for the Coal Creek Classic 10-miler that I registered for many months ago (when I thought I'd have time to actually train). I snoozed my alarm once but then got up; came very close to switching to the 5 km race at the packet pick-up table; but then eventually started the 10-mile course. I was very slow (third from last, I think), but I eked it out in just under two hours. Perfect weather (slightly overcast) and lots of nice early-morning nature noises along the path. I heard a prairie dog "cheer" for me. :-)
