Cycling tempo (Bike to Work) 36:49 [3] 6.5 mi (5:40 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:125lbs

The weather is so nice, I couldn't resist biking to work.

Before I could head out, I had to pump-up two completely flat tires, dig out my front light for the ride home, hunt through the house to find my shock pump, pump up my rear shock, lock-out the rear shock (I decided I don't really need full suspension on a road ride), etc. It took me quite a while to get going... And then about a mile down the road, I realized I hadn't locked-in my front tire. Oops.

Cycling tempo (Bike to Work) 37:49 [3] 6.5 mi (5:49 / mi)

Bike back home again...

I f-ed up royally at work today: I put a bag of popcorn in the microwave and walked away to get something off the printer. I only set it for 3 minutes -- but the bag was in FLAMES when I walked back into the break room (someone else had just opened it up). Opening the m/w was a mistake -- the whole kitchen filled with thick, stinky smoke. I can't believe the smoke alarm didn't go off...

Within a few minutes, the whole first floor of the building REEKED and I knew all the other cube dwellers would be out for blood. I grabbed my laptop and headed to the basement to hide for the rest of the day. I checked the parking lot periodically to see if it had cleared out sufficiently for me to sneak back to my desk for my things so I could leave without running into anybody. Ugh -- I felt nauseous.

I'm not sure if anyone knows it was ME who was responsible. I guess I'll be honest if asked, but I'm not going to volunteer it. I assume everyone will have forgotten about it by Monday, and hopefully the stench will have dissipated, too.

Note

I stopped by the office at around 8:00 pm, on my way to Troy's house. I emptied a can of "Oust" throughout the first floor. Hopefully that'll help the smell disappear by Monday...

Run / Hike hills (trail) 35:30 [3] 3.1 mi (11:27 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:125lbs

I worked late and missed my Strength Training Class as a result. Bummer...especially since there's only one session left.

But, there was enough daylight to eke out a jog at Davidson Mesa. My stomach was disgruntled about something the whole time, but I was otherwise happy to have mild weather and days-getting-longer.

Strength / Stretching intervals (Strength Training Runners) 20:00 [3]

Since I missed class, I did some of the Strength Training drills on my own:

  • High Knees 3x30 (15 per leg)
  • Butt-Kicks 3x30 (15 per leg)
  • 75-second Plank
  • Skate-Jumps 3x30 (15 per leg)
  • 75-second Plank
  • Squat Jumps 3x10
  • 75-second Plank

We finally got a win! 10-6.

    Strength / Stretching intervals (Strength Training Runners) 1:00:00 [3] 1.0 mi (1:00:01 / mi)
    slept:6.0 weight:125lbs

    Strength Training for Runners Class:

My Outlook reminder didn't pop up for some reason, so I was late. Apparently I'm overly reliant on electronic gadgets if I forget the class I've been attending twice a week for the past four months...!

Since I was late, I missed the warm-up laps and the first two sets of scissor jumps...

  • Scissor Jumps 1x16 (8 per leg)
  • Two-minute Plank
  • High Skips 3x24 (12 per leg)
  • Two-minute Plank
  • Skate Jumps 3x30 (15 per side)
  • Two-minute Plank
  • One-leg Squat Jumps 3x20 (10 per leg)
  • Fast High Knees 3x30 (15 per leg)
  • Fast Butt-Kicks 3x30 (15 per leg)

    Cool Down:
  • Jog five laps: 65, 66, 66, 66, 62
  • Fast-walk five laps (my bad foot was hurting...): 91, 85, 81, 83, 79

  • 12 pull-ups (palms out) with 65 lbs of assistance

    Soccer intervals (indoor) 40:00 [3]
    slept:8.0 weight:125lbs

Our Monday-night indoor team isn't coming together. We only had one sub last week, and it was painful (since it's a huge field). Tonight we had zero subs and, in fact, we were short one player. Ugh. On the bright side, I scored one of the goals in our 12-2 loss.

I could use a rest day. Maybe this physical exhaustion will help with my insomnia.

    Orienteering race (Green Course) 1:05:46 [3] 3.63 mi (18:07 / mi) +869ft 14:46 / mi
    slept:8.0 weight:125lbs

Again today, I had one dumb mistake in an otherwise good run. I often misread the power line symbol as a fence -- and today that caused me to overrun #4 by...a lot. DOH! (Both the power line and the fence had a NE-SW trending reentrant and an intersecting spur, so things "seemed" to be matching up. But it was still a dumb mistake.)

I also looked at a hillside that was mapped as green (on the way to #3), and it didn't look bad at all from where I was standing. So I proceded up that hillside, and it turned out to be a large patch of painful, grabby cat-claw that slowed me down significantly. Which is saying a lot, for someone who moves a slowly as I do in general. ;-)

Troy and I hung out at the finish afterwards for a while, and I didn't think to put sunscreen on my arms. They look like lobster claws right now.

Even though our flight home wasn't 'til 8:45 pm, we realized our car was due back at 4 pm. So, we visited the Pima Air & Space Museum on our way back into town, and then hung out at the airport for several hours.

This meet was a blast. In addition to the meet itself, I really enjoyed Tom Hollowell's training days and Cristina's party. And, Tucson had enough fun sights and excursions to keep us fully entertained.

    Orienteering race (Sprint) 29:38 [3] 1.94 mi (15:17 / mi) +131ft 14:21 / mi
    slept:8.0 weight:125lbs

I was running with as much speed as I could muster (well, maybe an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10), and my GPS tracks show that I was fairly accurate (except for mistakes at #6 and #10). John Pascal finished just six seconds behind me. p.s. I'm 36 and he's in his 70s. Wow.

GPS Tracks (I'm not sure why the tracks are so disjointed...):

    Orienteering race (Green Course) 1:15:33 [3] 4.4 mi (17:10 / mi) +558ft 15:20 / mi
    slept:8.0 weight:125lbs

I felt pretty happy about my accuracy today. But, I made the Dumb Route Choice of the Century on my way to #5. Sigh... (I thought running fast on the trail would be better than rocky footing and going up-and-down across those reentrants and spurs. But, the suprs weren't really all that steep or high, and the trail option took me so far out of the way...) DUMB!

    Note

Dinner at Guadalajara Grill. We were starving when we got there, but we figured it must be good if the parking lot was overflowing and there was a 30-minute wait... It was really good.

    Orienteering (Training Course) 1:16:57 [3] 3.34 mi (23:02 / mi) +262ft 21:27 / mi
    slept:8.0 weight:125lbs

A fun training course at TSN's Arthur Pack map -- with tons of cool cactus varieties. The terrain was pretty flat, so the focus was on precision compass work.

I skipped #6 when I realized I had missed it, and then I had an error at #7.

    GPS Tracks:

    Note

After the training course, we headed to the Titan Missile Museum. Very cool!

And then we saw Vantage Point. Not as cool! (The last movie I saw was "No Country for Old Men". So, this one seemed just that much more cheesey and Hollywood-mainstream in comparison...)

    Dinner at Grimaldi's Pizza.

Dessert and festivities at Cristina's (flourless chocolate cake -- YUM!).

    Orienteering tempo 1:52:48 [3] ***
    slept:6.0

A fun contour-only training course with a few sections of Line-O added in, at TSN's "Italian Trap" map.

It would have been nice if specific driving directions had been posted sooner than 9:30pm last night, for those of us who are "on the road". About 10 of us sat waiting at two different (wrong) parking lots after following the directions that were originally posted...("follow the directions on the TSN web site").

    Note

We were able to do a quick tour of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum before it closed for the day. It's actually more of a botanical garden and zoo than a museum. We missed the hummingbirds, but highlights of our tour included seeing: a roving group of grunty javelinas, a pack of obese prairie dogs, bobcats eating chunks of mystery meat, and some other exotic cat eating a dead bird.

    Dinner at El Charro.

    Soccer intervals (indoor) 45:00 [3]
    slept:10.0 weight:125lbs

Indoor soccer -- a new Monday night league at a different facility that's twice as big as the one in Boulder. Holy cow! Lots of running...(since the place was bigger and we only had one sub). We lost, mainly due to the fact that most of us were sucking wind after about 15 minutes...

    Orienteering (snowshoe course) 1:46:56 [3]

I did the Snowshoe Score-O at Eldora. The weather was perfect and the course was fun. Good job, JP!

Rock Climbing intervals (indoor) 1:00:00 [3]
    slept:8.0 weight:125lbs

Rock climbing at the gym with Troy and his buddy Mike.

We were there for 2.5 hours, but I'm guessing only one hour of that for me was actual climbing and belaying.

    5.10-, 5.10, 5.10+, 5.10+, 5.10-, 5.10, 5.10-

I peeled off repeatedly on the last two...but eventually made it to the top.

    Strength Training for Runners Class:

I think the hurdles and box jumps were supposed to be harder versions of tuck jumps and forward squat jumps -- but they weren't, really.

I forgot my watch, so I couldn't record splits.
