"Old Man Winter". I'll call it a 10K -- it was advertised as 5.8 miles with the finish specifically called out as being a few blocks from the start, but we ran through the "other" finish and continued on back to the start for 6.1 miles total; not sure what happened there...but some of the cyclists are complaining online about misplaced timing mats on their course, so maybe there were some logistical snafus.
It was about 23°F and overcast -- fine while running and then unpleasantly cold while standing around at the finish. But I did stand around for awhile, to eat my free green chile & chips and free beer.
I was originally also registered for the 50K bike race. On top of not being physically ready for that (I've only been out for one long ride in the past six or eight weeks), recent snow and cold meant much of the course was snowpack, slush, and mud (from what I heard), which I would have hated. And it was bitterly cold, which I would have hated even more.
On Friday, someone offered to buy the run / bike combo entry I had posted on the event page -- a bargain for them, since my early-registration fee was $37 cheaper than Friday's late-entry fee. THANK YOU, eight-pound-six-ounce sweet baby Jesus!!!! What a huge relief. I didn't want to do the bike race, but I also didn't want to be a "DNS" and waste the entry fee...
So I re-registered for just the run. I didn't expect this to be one of my faster runs -- about two miles of the course was snowpacked, and I didn't feel like I was in tip-top shape (two weeks ago, I got in zero running and no more than four hours of sleep for five days in a row (huge work project / deadline), and then it snowed a lot and was bitterly cold for much of last week).
But it was fun, and I won a little Otterbox thermos thingie in the drawing afterwards. My friend Cynthia was volunteering at the race, so we went for pancakes afterwards -- blueberry for me, and lemon-pecan for her (and also for me, since I ate her leftovers). :-P
