Orienteering race 2:01:26 [5] *** 10.5 km (11:34 / km) +410m 9:41 / km
24c shoes: Inov8 Orocs

GOC Long - Hilton College - 1:15'
A very tough race! Good practice for a WOC long I think. I had a very poor race navigation wise and struggled a lot in the 2nd half physically. I pushed too hard early on trying to stay ahead of people. It was nice to have so many people on my course nearby though - helped to keep motivation high.

Wrong route to #1. Craig caught 2 mins on me but I caught Evan. Ran a bit hard to #2 and #3 to stay ahead. Stuffed up #4. I mis-read the roads and open area and landed up on the lower road. Poor route again to #5 - top road was better. Then was left to #6. Lost time in the circle at #8 - the route stock was tiny and I didn't visualise the valley properly. Then got stuck in a nightmare of blackjacks to #9. I drifted left towards some clear forest and was confused about which road I landed up on. #9 was a nasty control - a depression in a forest full of black jacks. There were about 6 of us running around trying to find it (Jess L caught me here). I then got to #10 first and snuck away. Ran hard to #11 and #12 and had a 200m gap on the pack. Jess closed in on the hill up to #15. I was barely moving up the hill. We also caught Jess Hemer. Jess L pulled away and I caught Carl Holmes at #18. I messed up #21 - drifted too far left - concentration was no where at this point. After that just tried to keep it moving into the finish.
Was expecting Michele to have a good one and given my bad race 25 mins behind wasn't too much of a shock.

GOC Champs Middle - Hilton College
The course wasn't very technical so I knew I had to run my butt off. I had a smooth race and kept the pace high until #11 where I chose the wrong route choice and started dying up the hill. Recovered a bit on the downhill to #14 and finished relatively strongly. Was happy to be only 2:30 off the pace. Felt pretty broken after the race though!
