Played a cricket match against Boxburg High. We went into the match without our captain Stacy who is also our best player so we were bracing ourselves for a good hiding against the undefeated side. We went into bat and Sheola made 62! We ended on 81 from our 15 overs. We then fielded and bowled well to restrict them to 51. Intense stuff! I bowled okay. Got knocked around a bit but got a wicket and only bowled 1 wide. Loads of fun :-)

Orienteering race (Blue) 1:45:00 [5] *** 7.5 km (14:00 / km) +135m 12:51 / km
spiked:10/16c shoes: New Balance 472

Doornpoort 1: 10 000
Had a bad time out there. I think I've forgotten how to orienteer and I'm making mistakes that I should have stopped making ages ago.

To start with I started copying down the wrong course. I realized after copying down 4 controls so it wasn't too much of a disaster. I aced the first 3 then was planning ahead on the road to #4 and ran past my attackpoint. Stuffed up #6 and #7. I couldn't read the rocks or vegetation and the contours weren't very helpful so I blunded around like an idiot. Next was #8 which was apparently in the wrong place. I didn't notice going in because I was pretty clueless anyway and stumbled into it but it messed up my next leg. Had to relocate big time on #9. I decided that the rest of the course looked fairly manageable so I'd be able to end on a good note but it was not to be...I found Alex looking for #11 (never a good sign) and we ran around like headless chicken for a bit until Craig arrived. It was a water point and I always punch before I have water except apparently today I didn't. The last few controls were a mean slog.
I can't wait for the forests of Sabie!! I hope I will have remembered how to orienteer by then.

stationary bike 20:00 [3]

Managed to fit in a quick spin before supper. Had a team building day today so spent most of the day on my feet doing weird activities. The last 2 hours, however, were spent sitting on the hall floor listening to a guy talking about a whole lot of nothing. Was really stiff and half asleep when I got home so needed to do something.

Running 25:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas Response

School cross country training. Warmed up then ran a loop which took about 15 minutes. After that we did 300m hard 3 times with a 1 min rest in between. We did the usual cool down and stretches.
I then had to walk home and I had to move it as I really didn't want my school bag to get wet. It was eerie because it went all dark and was blowing a gale. It started drizzling with a few hundred meters to go but I made it through the door relatively dry. Phew!

Note

Played a cricket match against Germiston High and we actually won!
We bowled first and they didn't exactly have a strong line up so we got wickets quickly. We bowled them out for 26. I bowled 3 overs, took 4 wickets and conceded 2 runs which were both wides. Not bad but I still didn't bowl very consistently. We got 27 runs easily so I didn't have to bat. So Germiston were hardly great competition but it was just what we needed. We had fun, gained a bit of confidence and they were nice, friendly girls.
My knee is sore again from bowling.

Note

Figured out my leg is sore from bowling. Had a chilled weekend and stretched a lot. No cricket match today which was good but we have one on Wednesday.

Friday Aug 21, 2009 #

Note

Had cricket practice from 14:00 to 16:30. Did fielding and then a bit of bowling. My right leg is sore. ITB I think.

stationary bike 25:00 [3]

Too cold to venture out. Had a good stretch afterwards. My legs are a bit sore from Tuesday's run

Wednesday Aug 19, 2009 #

Note

Cricket practice. Lots of fielding and a bit of bowling.

Orienteering (At wits) 30:00 [3]

Map memory exercise. Tricky because you look at the map quickly and think you know Wits so well that you bolt off only to realize that you probably should have looked a bit closer. I collected the maps so had to resist the temptation of having another look. Bit chilly out.
Our usual post Sunday race discussion was postponed due to no power in the club house

Note

Played a cricket match against Hoerskool De Anker. We lost. By the time we arrived in the depths of Brakpan it was already after 3 so the game was shortened to 15 overs a side. We batted first. I opened the batting and handled the first few overs of medium pace okay, then a spinner came on. Never faced a spinner before...I was clueless and was sent walking pretty quickly. We made 50/7
De Anker cruised home in 9 overs. Glad I didn't have to bowl. We put down 2 catches to add to our misery.
So they annihilated us, but I tried to have fun. At least it was over quickly so we got home at a decent time.

Orienteering race 1:30:18 [5] *** 6.52 km (13:51 / km) +180m 12:10 / km
spiked:13/17c shoes: New Balance 472

Middle Distance at Gerotek. Not a great day. I got a start time which was way too early for my liking thanks to the scary person at registration, so I had to rush to get ready and the race time was fast! so I had to walk straight into the back box. Then my start time was double booked. Also knew Salome would be starting a few minutes after me which psyched me out.Anyway I calmed down nicely and despite my few meters in the wrong direction out the start box I aced #1. But after #2 it went wrong. I couldn't read the veg after my attack point to #3 so overshot it. Messed up #4, again unsure of the veg and direction was off. Lost 4 or so minutes on #7. Battled to read the veg and didn't want to land up too low so ended up way too high. It didn't go too badly after that but Salome caught me at #16 which I stuffed up. Raced her to the finish. Only 2 women on brown today and my poor run put me at the bottom of the list. Don't feel like I'm orienteering well at the moment...

Cricket practice. Lots of bowling and batting.

Training at Wits. Did a few laps and then some grid exercises and puzzle relay things with some mini hurdles. We looked at the Gerotek map as it got dark.

Note

Cricket match against Benoni High. They beat us convincingly, but we didn't play too badly for the first match of the season. I didn't have the best day. We bowled first. Our opening bowlers, who are pretty decent, got smashed. I was first change, so I was pretty unnerved when I came on to bowl. My slower bowling was harder to get away though so we started to contain them. I bowled 4 overs for 16 runs with no wickets. Not bad but I bowled way too many wides. Benoni made 111/5 off 18 overs.
We were only told our batting order as we were walking off the field so I didn't have much time to recover from the shock of being told that I was opening. I did not expect that! I was thinking maybe around 5 or 6 somewhere. Anyway...I had fun running 2's and watching Stacy hit a boundary, then I was on strike. Eeek:-0. I kept out a few and then thought one was going down legside, but it hit me on the back of the leg so I was out lbw. Oh well...We were all out for 60 something after 14 overs.
We've got a lot of work to do...

Cycling 58:16 [3] 15.6 km (16.1 kph)

Rode to Bill Stewart, around the top and down the other side on the bumpy paths. Rode home along Kloof rd, past Bishop Bavin and down Queen st. Another lovely warm day.

Sunday Aug 9, 2009 #

Note

Had a speedy walk up Easter Kloof with the family. Made it up to the bum slides and then had to head back to the farm for lunch. Nice, warm day for a walk.

Running 30:00 [3]
slept:6.0 shoes: Adidas Response

Had cricket practice from 13:15 until 16:00. Pretty shocking that the team can't get their butts to practice especially as we're playing our first match on Tuesday. Did fitness, then loads of fielding. Had our usual session in the middle. I bowled a lot. Wasn't quite getting it right so just kept at it for ages. Still not very confident going into the match. Legs are tired.

Running 25:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas Response

School cross country training. I organised the session today. It's hard to figure out what to do as there is a large range of fitness levels. Half the people can barely run for more than 5 minutes without dying. Not a great turn out because we're writing exams tomorrow. Did a 10 min warm up, stretched, did the cross country route inside the grounds, some sprint zig-zags and then finished off with the usual lunges and squats. Dom managed to trip and cut her knee open so I had to run around making sure she didn't bleed to death (it wasn't that bad but it looked really sore and there was quite a lot of blood).

Wednesday Aug 5, 2009 #

Note

Had cricket practice. Played some soccer to warm up and for fitness. Worked on my batting quite a bit with Donovan. Seems to be improving.

Running (At Wits) 25:00 [3]

Did a few laps to warm up, a fun exercise with mazes and a few more laps to warm down. Had some fun with my tennis ball after wards. Nice that it's getting dark a bit later. Discussed our Hedianga routes too.

At Hedianga, 1:5 000. The expected blizzard stayed away and it turned into a nice, warm day. I helped with registration so I started last. I didn't see anyone else out there until the very end. I did brown. It went okay but I started horribly. I lost about 6 minutes on #1. Distance judgment was off and I couldn't figure out the map. Overshot #2 and stuffed around trying to make sense of everything. After that I settled down. Had a bit of trouble in the circle at #6, #13 and #19. The rest weren't bad but very few were perfect. I hesitated a lot and was slow.

There weren't many women on brown so I won. I still like the area. It's always ridiculously hard at the start of the course but lots of fun towards the end.

Collected controls. I made sure I got to collect my #1 and #2. Good to see how I should have done those legs.
