Orienteering 27:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas Response

Training at Wits. Preceded by cleaning the club house for street party.
Massive turn out: Alex, Olivia and me. We did a course round campus with map memory thrown in. Good sprint training. Then a lap of the track which is mostly still there. The piles of rubble make it much more interesting.

Cycling 52:00 [2] 14.2 km (16.4 kph)

Chilled ride to Bill Stewart.

Orienteering race (Relay) 26:00 [5] *** 2.5 km (10:24 / km) +75m 9:03 / km
spiked:12/13c shoes: VJ Twisters

SA Champs Relay, Klipkraal 1:5000.
Lovely runnable forest. Ran first leg for ROC 2nd team. I had a good run with only a few small mistakes. My legs were heavy and they didn't enjoy coming up the hill to the common control the 3rd time. Having Jess L on my butt most of the way round was good motivation to keep moving though. Ken and Craig had good runs so we finished about 10th.

Orienteering race (Classic Distance) 1:10:33 [5] *** 6.2 km (11:23 / km) +200m 9:48 / km
spiked:16/18c shoes: New Balance 472

Had a decent race. Navigation was okay but felt slow. Messed up #5 once I was in the circle even though I was being cautious as Alex had messed up that control in the middle. Caught Jess L at #10 then Jess H at #11. It definitely helped having them with me for a bit. Got away from them on the way to #16. Lost focus on the way to #17 and felt confused and out of it. Probably had over 4 minutes of mistakes. Salome won, Steph was 2nd. Enjoyed it more than the middle.
Didn't feel great after the race. Was all dizzy and nauseous for a few hours.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3]
shoes: VJ Twisters

Ran around on the model map for about 5 minutes. Had a good warm up to the start. Quads felt sore.

Orienteering race (Middle distance) 43:50 [5] *** 3.2 km (13:42 / km) +50m 12:42 / km
spiked:9/13c shoes: VJ Twisters

SA champs middle distance, Klipkraal Sabie.
I didn't have a great run. The way the vegetation was mapped took a bit of getting used to. I was slow through the bracken from 2 to 3. Found a few extra bends in the river than are shown near #10 so lost time there. Made a stupid parallel error on #11 where Steph caught me. Managed to get away from her across the river but she won by 5mins.

Running race (Inter-house cross country) 21:02 [5] 4.0 km (5:16 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response

Ouch! Had a good but painful race. Started fast and soon D, Cynthia and I were leading. D pulled away and Cynthia dropped back up the hill so I went through half way in 2nd. Cynthia caught me on the downhill and we dragged each other to the 3km mark. She got away from me up the last hill. Tried to stick with her but was on the verge of throwing up. Finished 3rd. Mission accomplished.
Harveyan super star Karla led the juniors home.

Note
(rest day)

Nice chilled afternoon ahead of a tough few days. Inter-house cross country tomorrow which is going to hurt and then 3 days of orienteering :-)

Note

Played a cricket match against Balfour Hoerskool. We left at 12:30 so missed the last 2 lessons of school. Took over an hour to get to Balfour. Strange place! Lots of farms and mountains about. They batted first and made 38. I didn't get to bowl. I opened the batting. Was more successful than previous times but still not great. Played a few good shots before getting out lbw, again, although I definitely got my bat to it. Silly umpire! We cruised to 38 and managed to get back to school at a reasonable hour.

Adventure Racing race (Kinetic Urban Adventure) 28:00 [5]
shoes: New Balance 472

Kinetic Sprint race at Broadacres shopping centre. Paired with Zoe. First leg was confusing finding the right shops. Second running leg took us into the gym where we had to do 1km bike, row, treadmill. I spun my legs on the bike, Zoe did the row then I did the run. Did the run in just over 5mins.

Adventure Racing race 1:56:04 [4] 25.0 km (4:39 / km)

The first cycle leg, the road-map nav, was pretty tough. Felt like it took ages. There was a fair bit of off-road stuff but nothing too hectic. I did the nav. One error meant we had to go up an extra hill. Whoops. Second leg was with rally type instructions. No problems. Ended up taking it quite easy towards the end.
And we survived the obstacle course!

Wasn't very lucky at prize giving but fortunately I have a rather lucky and kind brother who got me a cool first ascent hat that I've wanted for ages.

Friday Sep 18, 2009 #

Note

Usual cricket practice. Not many people there so nice opportunity to work on my bowling with Mr D. Got a good rhythm going towards the end.

Running 25:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas Response

Had a hectic day but managed to fit in a run. Had school, then couldn't go to cross country as I had to help moderators find their way around. So after I'd done my duty I put my kit on and went for a run. It was rather hot and I didn't feel great. Then I cooled down, put my uniform back on and hopped on the bus to St Albans for Tour da Maths.

Wednesday Sep 16, 2009 #

Note

I couldn't get to Wits for training this afternoon but it wasn't a bad one to miss. The protests at Wits put people off so no one went. Cricket practice was fairly energetic though and I'm still worried about my scratchy throat.

Tuesday Sep 15, 2009 #

stationary bike 30:00 [2]

Now would be a bad time to get sick! Bit short on sleep so not doing anything hectic.

Monday Sep 14, 2009 #

Note

Cricket match against Wordsworth High. Not exactly exciting. We bowled first and got them out for 33. I bowled 2 overs and got 1 wicket. Was glad to get off the field quickly as it was really hot. We cruised to 34 in 4 overs for no loss. Had a cool game of bus cricket on the way home.

Orienteering race 1:28:15 [5] *** 5.9 km (14:57 / km) +350m 11:32 / km
spiked:10/12c shoes: New Balance 472

Mountain Marathon. The map was a bit old but it wasn't too bad. I had a good run. The thorns made it rather unpleasant at times especially on the small hill on the west of the map. My route choice to #5 wasn't the best and I left the path too early so could have saved a lot of time there. Wasted a bit of time on #7 which was slightly out of place (i think). After that I enjoyed the mostly downhill run home. Saw zebra and lots of impala (i think that's what they were). Was just over a minute ahead of Salome.

Friday Sep 11, 2009 #

Note

Usual cricket practice.

Thursday Sep 10, 2009 #

Running 25:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas Response

Cross Country Prac. Did the cross country loop then ran it backwards to meet the slow people. We were going to do some laps around the field but the sprinklers came on...not that anyone was too keen anyway. Did a bit of core stuff and stretched in the shade instead

Wednesday Sep 9, 2009 #

Note

Had Cricket Practice. Played kings and toilet, then a game of leg-side tip and run. Messed around a bit.

Running 20:00 [3] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response

Ran the '4km' Len Smith route at Wits with Alex. Legs felt heavy.

Orienteering 20:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas Response

Did a map memory grid thing with lots of running around in between. Hard work but lots of fun. I was almost crawling by the last round which was a race.
The track is still mostly intact but I wasn't up for a km. Maybe next week...

Tuesday Sep 8, 2009 #

Running 29:50 [3] 4.4 km (6:47 / km)
ahr:170 max:186 slept:9.0 shoes: Adidas Response

Hilly route! Went up Orion, along Highland to the monument, down Alice, up King Edward, along Ernest, up Nile and home along Derby. Was almost like doing hill intervals. Worked hard the whole way but enjoyed it.

Monday Sep 7, 2009 #

Note

Rather boring cricket match against Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld High. They batted first limping to 27. I only got to bowl one over which was nothing special and got no action in the field. It was also really hot. Stacy and Karisha raced to 28 in no time so I didn't even have to pad up.

Things did get more exciting though. Miss C bought us McFlurrys on the way home and Coach Donovan took control of the radio :-)

Sunday Sep 6, 2009 #

Cycling 58:09 [3] 15.31 km (15.8 kph)

Rode to Bill Stewart, around the top on the paths then home past the old house. Nice and quite so early in the morning. Already warm though.
Ave 15.8; max 46.9

Friday Sep 4, 2009 #

Note

Had cricket practice. It was really hot.

Thursday Sep 3, 2009 #

Running 20:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas Response

School cross country training. Warmed up and stretched then did one lap of the inter-house route which is 2km. Did it in 11:40 with the fastest girls then ran back to run with the stragglers.

strength 10:00 [2]

I'd planned a bit more running but after the loop most people where dead so we did some sit ups and other core exercises in the shade.

Wednesday Sep 2, 2009 #

Note

Had to miss cricket practice today because I had a neurologist appointment. He's a legend. I've been migraine free for more than 3 months now!

Running 20:00 [3]
slept:8.0 shoes: Adidas Response

O' training at Wits. 3 laps warm up. The lots of fun activities including cone relocation and map puzzles.

Track/speed work 4:21 [5] 1.0 km (4:21 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response

Possibly our last km on the Wits track. Construction is starting soon. The lights have gone and there's lots of orange tape about. Enjoyed my km. It felt faster than it was.

Tuesday Sep 1, 2009 #

Running 19:55 [2] 3.2 km (6:13 / km)
slept:6.0 shoes: Adidas Response

Ran with Alex. The usual short loop but in reverse. I'm a bit short on sleep. This is turning into a hectic week.
