Event: QOC Jug Bay

Orienteering 1:14:17 [3] 3.67 mi (20:15 / mi)
(injured) shoes: inov-8 X-Claw 275

@ Jug Bay

started my watch late, not accurate.

Vince begged off - claimed it was raining & he had gone to the Kendrick Lamar concert on Friday & then up early on Sat to take the SATs and he had something else Sat night. He looked at me right after the SATs with tiredness in his voice and eyes and promised to make me dinner on Sun in exchange for not going orienteering. Honestly, I didn't want to go in the pouring rain either and my hamstring is depressing me and then I feel bad for being depressed about the hamstring because I am essentially just fine and can do many things - like 99% of all the things so what the heck should I be complaining about? Sigh. Jeremy shooed me out of the house and said - you'll feel better after you are done, you know you will. And, of course, it was true.

I also didn't want to go because I'm a terrible drinker - not only of alcohol, but of all fluids. I'm well known in the house for leaving full glasses of water all over the place which are there after I take only a sip. Hydration is always a goal for which I fail. This chugging skill is one that is underdeveloped and I would have to actually train for that portion of the run, so all my drinking splits are suspect because I drank only water - not even soda.

My first mass start event which was interesting by itself. I forgot bug spray and I'm paying dearly today. Mosquito bites all up and down my arms. I thought I'd follow other folks, at least for the first bit because I never see anyone else actually orienteer going from control to control, I thought I'd learn something useful. I tucked in behind Kathleen & Don and didn't pay attention to the map much and wondered if I could just follow them the whole time figuring that they would both lead me competently and sure-footedly (which they would have because they both bested me) the whole way, but we all bobbled on the 2nd control. Don went another way after the 2nd control, I follow Kathleen to the third, but we split when we on the spur where the 3rd control was.

Then I was on my own for the rest of the loops. I lost it on the 2nd control of the 2nd loop where I couldn't tell the boundaries of the swamp because everything in the area was flooded. I swamped around getting bitten for a good 15 minutes there. That knocked me down a couple of slots.

I did have a good time, I was feeling that tired-ish feeling afterwards which is nice. My hamstring is the same which is a bummer, but I'm trying to not be bummed about it. I haven't run steadily in a couple of weeks, so it felt good to do so at least a bit. I got super wet going through black & brown and still & running water. Only one surprising dunking when I went from knee deep to waist deep in one step thus drenching my phone in my waist pack. It survived the brief submersion. Sadly, didn't hang around, I thought I was going to spend this week in Philly, so headed home to pack.
