Orienteering 2:59:53 [3] 6.52 mi (27:35 / mi)

@ C&O
I felt pretty crappy today - skipped my usual long run which I would have done at the C&O right before the orienteering, but I slept in.
Today, I tried to really look at the contours as I moved through the woods and tried to match what I saw with what was on the map. This was a nice park to do that in, visibility was good, lots of hills. Easier to do earlier in the course when I was happy to start and pay attention & harder to do later as I tired and everything got more confusing and wanted just to finish. As I get away from water features, I can't figure out the contour lines. Which way is up? Like from 11 to 12, about the center point, what does that space look like? I have no idea even as I sit here and look at the map.
I didn't run anything because I wasn't feeling well and I didn't know if I would make it to the end, so I wanted to conserve my energy. It would have been a nice place to run, I think I'll need to go back to Orange to run some courses, I'm forgetting what that feels like & that sometimes is more fun.
Because the course was really constrained, I reoriented a few times off of controls which I was not looking for which was helpful, but it really showed I did not know where I really was.
I need gaiters. So much crap in my shoes.
