running 50:00 [4]
The "bushwhacker" - a 20k trail race where cutting corners is allowed. Had a great QOC turn-out and comradery, which made the race extra fun. Wasn't sure how I'd handle the distance, so started out comfortably, taking slightly shorter, quicker strides than I would on a shorter run and generally just trying to stay relaxed. Legs were feeling OK but not too great on the ups. By the halfway I was tiring a little, so I just kept on going the way I had been, not trying to push it. Then after the last checkpoint I was actually starting to feel pretty good, and definitely had something left in the tank to hammer the last mile along the trail. Unfortunately I "hammered" straight ahead where the trail we were supposed to follow switched back, despite my being paranoid of taking the wrong trail and losing it here... So probably lost 2.5 minutes and two places just a half-mile from the end. Frustrating, but part of the game. Overall, really fun, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well I handled it physically.
Note to any Australian readers - in US English "bushwhacking" means bushbashing. But I'm not sure what the US word for being bushwhacked is...
