James Grant Memorial Multisport Race
Great location in the Goldsborough valley behind Gordonvale and a beautiful morning for a race. The transitions were spread out along the river so the morning started with a kayak and bike drop-off at their respective locations then the drive to the start line. The bike drop-off also involved carrying the bike across the river - this was meant to be part of the race but the river level was higher than normal and so they didn't want anyone getting washed away trying to do this quickly!
The race started off with a 15km trail run, on the Goldfield trail, so the other end of the same trail that the trail run was on a fortnight ago. There were a few big hills in the second half as we then ran towards the kayak start. I was a bit nervous about the kayak as the river was up and I wasn't sure what to expect with the rapids. I stopped worrying about racing at this point and just focussed on getting through this section! The first few rapids were the biggest ones, and I found myself off my sit-on-top kayak a few times. Despite this I started to enjoy some of the smaller rapids by the end. Then there was the mountain bike leg which started off in the cane fields and then onto the road for a while. Unfortunately I got a flat at this point and this led to a series of misadventures with stuffed spare tubes and repairs that didn't last. A friend was kind enough to stop and help me out, and I ended up having to take his last spare tube to get back to the finish area. We were meant to have another out and back section but we decided we'd had enough at this point. Turns out the decision was made for us as we'd missed the cutoff anyway.
Despite the problems on the bike it was a great morning. The run was really good and the kayak could be really good fun with a bit of practice. I found myself daydreaming a bit on the flat water sections and marvelling at how lucky I was to be able to be out there and have such locations available to explore!

Couldn't resist the opportunity for a run on my favourite trail, South Boundary Rd, so did an out and back 10km. Played cat and mouse with a mountain biker who was not impressed I kept catching him each uphill section.

Cairns' version of street-o. Teams of 2 or 3, 1 hr limit. At each point had to record the last two digits of the code on the powerpole. Good fun even if it was a bit hard at times to work out which pole they were referring to. Josh and I cleared the course and were probably the third team back to do so, but I think we all got some 'wrong'.

Running race 2:24:50 [5] 23.0 km (6:18 / km)

Gold Rush Trail Marathon event at Babinda. Held off making a decision about doing this until I saw how I pulled up from Saturday's effort. Turned out that I felt fine, so lined up in the rain for the start of this. (Not particularly unusual in one of the wettest parts of Australia) The race was an out-and-back along the Goldfield trail, a rainforest track with numerous creek crossings and virtually no flat sections. The main climb was from about the 3km to 8km mark, then a descent to the turnaround at the causeway across the East Mulgrave River, then the opposite in reverse. Ran most of it with a guy called Julian before he sped away in the second half. I knew the women's course record was 2hrs 24 something, and thought I had no chance at the turnaround but despite a good shot at it towards the end missed it by 40sec or so. Next year perhaps.

Multisport race 3:21:55 [5] 41.0 km (4:55 / km)

Adventurethon Townsville. I did the Enduro which started out with a 7km ocean paddle, then 28km mountain bike, then 7km trail run. The paddle was fun, but definitely not my strongest skill. I enjoyed where we had a turnaround so I could watch the leaders coming back towards me as they just made it look so effortless! Ended up mid to end of the pack, and behind a big group of girls. Then onto the mountain bike which started out with about 10km of fairly tricky single trail. Passed a lot of people during this which gave me some confidence that perhaps my bike handling skills had improved a bit. Then picked up the speed as we went onto some fire trails and more open paths. The run was a good course with lots of variability but the beach section at the end was tough! Awesome event and great course with lots of challenges. Didn't know any placings until the presentations so was very happy to take the win in the womens. Maybe should look at doing the Ultra event next year, but with the women's winner taking almost 6 hrs it would be a big day out. (And maybe some paddling training needed beforehand!)

From Davies Creek, an out and back along Bridle Creek Road. Easy fire trail for the first 5km then the hills started to get bigger. Muddy in parts in the rainforest section, but a good trail all up. Didn't see anyone until two groups of trail bikes right at the very end.

Cross country race at Goomboora Park. It was mostly just the school kids preparing for the states who were running, with a few extras like me. The 2km loop turned out to be a bit short but was an interesting course with lots of tricky single trail along the creek which slowed everyone down.
