I'm finally properly sick. The general lingering malaise saw it's chance after a weekend of too late nights and low quality food, and has taken control. Hoping that once this is kicked I'll feel properly well again. Day at home today.

Already feeling bad but the cycle home felt okay. The hybrid makes going uphill at a reasonable pace much easier, even if it's not that much faster flat out.

3 and a half days cycling this week - Rob came into town for a meeting and gave me a lift back yesterday. It's obviously a while since I did a walk like that - my legs have been super tired all week! Not slept well all week either thanks to a weekend way off routines, so generally feeling meh. A productive week at work though where I've felt I'm finally finding my feet.

Eclipse day! We were out of the door by 7, stopped at Starbucks, and then drove to the parking lot of the Piggly Wiggly at Decatur which seemed to be a place not likely to get many visitors, but with plenty of options for routes south to Atlanta. The morning drive was no problem at all, lots of cars from other places but no jams.

We pulled up in the Piggly Wiggly and quickly realised that there was no phone service (for navigation when leaving to avoid the worst of the traffic) and that no one wants to hang out in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot in Decatur TN for 6 hours, and decided to hop across the highway towards Athens instead. The town of Athens put on an event in their regional park, and we managed to find a parking spot there. Spent five hours avoiding the sun as much as possible, sat next to people waiting for a lunar eclipse while they talked about how the moon landings were fake (come on people!), and then saw the totality in fully clear skies. It was incredible. The dusk like lighting, the drop in temperature, the ring of light around the edge of the moon - it was really something. Really glad we made the trip, and very grateful to the people of Athens TN for not even giving visitors from all over the country a chance to pay them for the use of their park. Spoke to people from all over the country, and the atmosphere was fantastic.

The journey back to ATL wasn't so far, heavy traffic for the first hour but not the armageddon we'd been promised - we did end up avoiding the highway for that hour (thanks google maps traffic!). Then our plane was delayed for hours, and we got home at 3.30am, meaning most of this week has been spent in a tired haze. But totality (hah!) worth it :)

Hill Walking 4:00:00 [2]

Spent all Saturday driving from Atlanta to our place in Pigeon Forge, TN. Our plans for a short walk were scuppered by the Chimney Top trail being burned out and then a tiny bear up a tree induced traffic jam (very cute, people should learn to pull over). Lovely little cabin outside the worst of Pigeon Forge, which was a bizarre cross between Blackpool and Vegas. Not a place we will go near again I think!

But on Sunday we got out early for us and did the Alum Cave Trail up to the top of Mount Le Conte. All the other trails we'd planned were closed, including Clingman's Dome, but this proved to be a fine substitute with excellent views of peaceful rolling green. Glad we started earlyish, as by the mid afternoon it was super hot, but by then we were down and ready for ice cream.

Only cycled three days this week. Had to stay home one day because we were getting a desk delivered, then discovered a very large leak in the basement and had plumbers in for the rest of the day. Landlord was excellent and the water gushing all over the floor was sorted out remarkably quickly.

Everyone in the lab this week has been ill and I've been feeling on the edge myself all week. So all I've done this week is cycle, and I lumped it all together. I've tried some new routes but my old ones are the best - the others are only quicker if you skip every red light, which I don't like doing. I had to get my Hep B titre checked downtown on Wednesday and cycling through tech Cambridge is crazy, so many bikes in a constant stream, including one dad who's kid was singing at the top of his voice the whole way through. It wasn't very tuneful but it was quite cute.

The hybrid was a good buy.

No real exercise today. By the afternoon we were feeling we should do something, and took a stroll to Honeycomb ice cream, which was AMAZING. Best ice cream I've had in a long time. Then down to the river, and back via a cold drink.

Walked down to Medford to pick up the bikes (new favourite bike shop - JRA cycles. Huge selection of everything and normal people nice staff) and then cycled. Wouldn't have logged except for the final hill - it's a killer!

New bikes are obviously not expensive bikes but run smoothly and v. light for the price. We got an extra $50 off each because they were scratched in the warehouse, so all in all an excellent bargain.

The new Hubway app times your rides and gives you all time stats. It makes me happy. Got the last bike at Trum field and the penultimate dock at Spaulding. Brought repair kit to hopefully patch up my inner enough to get me to a bike shop on the way home!


Does anyone have a favourite bike shop in the Cambridge Somerville area btw?! There's so many!


I would really like to go a multi day orienteering event again.
