Fun morning out at Gay City with Izzy and Evalin. Did some creepy shadowing as they did a multi skill exercise - very well I should add. I was pretty tired the whole way, but it was really great to be out in snow free woods in January!

Here's the route from today's walk in the Preserve. There were many more trails out there too! You can park where we started, at the end of Ingham Hill Road in Old Saybrook, or on the north side, again off Ingham Hill Road. The north side is Essex Land Trust and is very well signed.

Spent the afternoon out hiking round what I'm pretty sure is CT's newest State Park - the Preserve at Old Saybrook. As I'm pretty sure M told me years ago, it is really quite beautiful, and we only discovered a fraction of the many trails there. Then a hot chocolate at a new coffee shop in Old Saybrook (Ashlawn Farms, very nice) a trip to the Book Barn Sale (12 books for $29!), and home. Once we got back I headed out for today's train, a quick aerobic 29 minutes. Was feeling the hot chocolate a bit halfway round, but it improved towards the end.
I also saw a woodpecker really close it doing it's thing at the Preserve, and that was awesome.

This wasn't a two part run, I just did silly things with my watch. Tired at the start, hungry by the end.

Two times Metis endurance, then some silly sprints. Metis endurance is just sprawls, filler, sprawls. Jumping up and down lots on the grass brought worms to the surface, which was pretty weird.

Switched Thurs and Fri on my plan as was tired this morning, and also needed the extra minutes to run to work for early lab meeting on Friday. Remembered the plan wrong and skimped 2 minutes. Shock horror!

Really enjoyed today's session. Got out to the YCGA on time, and then went to Racebrook Tract in the last hour of sunlight. 3 sets of 5 mins of 30/30s, with 3 mins jog between. Felt strong and light despite the very soggy slush underfoot. The light was gorgeous out there, really beautiful.
Then in the final five mins, just as I was thinking "and not even any dogs," an over excited dog appeared from nowhere and scratched me all down my right thigh. Thanks nature karma!
Still a really good session. Also left my watch on in the car, but time and distance are adjusted.

Garmin pretended to have found satellites, but it was lying. 23 minutes aerobic, with 4 x 20 seconds strides. Did these on the snowy grass because I only had my X Talons. Was hoping to make it to Racebrook Tract but it'll be tomorrow instead. Felt much better once I got out than I did before I started.
Yowsa this morning was much more difficult with the Freeletics DOMS! Lots of melting today now.

Progression "long" run! I ran towards the snow, and so although I raised my heart rate, my speed didn't actually go up - if anything it went down! Was supposed to be out 41 mins, but figured I'd go for 4 miles, each mile harder than the last, given I wussed out a couple of times earlier this week. Then walked to the top of East Rock and back, via a trip to Vero and Mirko to meet the twins. They were very calm, which I gather is not always the case. A lovely day out, which definitely merited an early bath and pyjamas before dark. Just wish I'd remembered to drag out the bins before said pyjamas.
A bit of Yowsa just as it got dark. Snow up to about 7 inches, extremely light and fluffy and so despite all those press ups, Yowsa wasn't too Yowsa like!
Still not much in the way of wind here, just occasional gusts.

Venus Endurance again :( My shoulders and arms were tired before I even started (a week of many pipetting) so this was a case of just very slowly working through while the snow fell.

I've worked way too hard this week and my awesome training plan from Alex has therefore been neglected. Got home today, tired at 6, and went for a shuffle to ease up a bit. It actually felt really good, I was happy to get out. Wonder how much snow we're going to get tomorrow?

Alex's plan said an easy aerobic run with 4 x 20 seconds strides. I did 8 sets of strides because it was cold. 20s is a long time for strides.
Was going to do Freeletics when I got home but instead Farmer carried all our groceries 1.5 miles because Rob had the car and his boss was running 90 minutes late with meetings. Shoulders way too tired for Venus now.
Pretty annoyed about that. Left work at 5.45, not going to eat dinner till 9. Boo. It is smelling delicious though.
Edit: thought my easy aerobic speed was getting faster and was happy, but looking at my GPS trace Garmin was just drunk.

Ran course 1 first, and was feeling the climbers in my butt the whole way! Was moving okay, but not fast. Couldn't get the scale right at first and so hesitated way too early on the way to number 3. Then was very confused most of the way to number 5, I really wanted to go further to the right the whole way. Missed the right hill at number 7, didn't waste much. After that it was all good.

Better for this one, no big doozies and mostly on the line. Struggling physically - I've had a sore throat every night and this morning the back of my throat was a bit swollen. Resting HR fine though, and I think it's just a bit of snot in my head, nothing worse. Guess I will find out tomorrow!
Really, really, really good to be out in the woods. Two short courses was perfect for my lack of practice.

Into work for lab meeting. Once coffee was down actually felt good with the early start, and this turned into a bit of an unofficial progression run. Pleasantly surprised.
Just made it through the essentials today at work then sat down. I am tired. Experiments in weird places are much more stressful than normal experiments.
I didn't run this weekend but I was on my feet for pretty much three days solid. Rob and I booked a loft in Williamsburg and explored some of the things we still hadn't done yet. On Friday we ate at the Michelin starred Meadowsweet, which is not in anyway pretentious although slightly above our usual budget. It was delicious. On Saturday we got crepes for breakfast, before a big walk checking out Ursula's work at the Barclay's Center, walking over Brooklyn Bridge, visiting the 9/11 memorial and then wandering back up to the L train via the Strand. We picked up pizza from Roberta's (Jay Z's favourite) and then went back out for sweet crepes for dessert, via a bar that played Elastica songs. A Good Saturday.
Early breakfast on Sunday (re.union - the most amazing jam) then over to Moma to see the Jackson Pollock exhibition (not actually that great, quite limited) and there's a new contemporary gallery which was fun. Saw Airienteer Lowry Jones, but didn't remember her name so couldn't call her over to talk. That was random. Then lunch, a Central Park stroll, and then 2 hours of disaster trying to return via the L and failing miserably because it was down. Ended up walking the Pulaski Bridge instead, which was fantastic in the sunset, then dropping in on Emma on the way back. Ramen take away and then bed.
Monday I had an experiment at Rockefeller, so I took the L, then walked up 1st too 66th from 14th. That was good, because I spent the next 6 hours or so in a windowless room and then it was dark. Back to New Haven at 9.30, a great night's sleep, and now an easy morning at home before heading back to work.

Spent a lovely afternoon at Pootatuck State Forest (one of the better ones,it turns out, with a view and everything), then came home and bashed off the first draft of the paper (Rob is still cutting but we're essentially there - whoop!) then went for a run. Felt tired before leaving the house but fine by two mins into the run. There's a lesson there.

I finally pretty much lost it this week. It's been a long time coming. I tried to relax after Rob's parents left and I just got more and more stressed until I couldn't sleep or think. Worried about career stuff, watching my oldest friend's house surrounded by water on the news and being unable to go and help her out, annoyed by the fact I had no friends to hang out with and do something fun with on New Year, (small number of friends elsewhere or baby'ed), and finally coming to the realisation, at 3am in the morning, that Kitch is right, it's not worth staying here until I get a tenure track job. I need to swallow my pride, come home, and do another post doc. My mental state so directly affects my health, and while all the medical indications are that I'm super healthy (except maybe a tad overweight, but who cares), I don't feel like I am. Getting out of bed yesterday was a big struggle, only achieved by pancakes (at lunchtime) and the promise of a State Park.
So, on Monday, the emails start going out. Oxford and Edinburgh first bets, and it also depends on Rob's progress through interviews (currently good). But it's better to be separate in the UK for a year or so than separate between continents.
I need to feel like I'm moving and I currently feel stuck. I love my O' friends, but they're too far away, and I love my workmates (and being in the lab actually), but I can't just work. I need music and more orienteering and love and life. And my Mum. I need my Mum.
Sorry for the self indulgence, but sometimes I don't think we talk about stuff like this enough.
So anyway, today Rob and I spent four hours or so writing a surprising amount of our paper (it's finally getting there!), and then I went for a run round the neighbourhood. Pushed to the tougher edge of cruising at the end but not beyond.

Coach is killing me, so I redid the assessment. I obviously did it too fast because I pretty much have the same level workouts again now :s. Nemesis, didn't manage to do full climbers for the final round. Totally dead.
